2013 Projects

Here are projects that I have completed over the year. I hope you enjoy looking through them.

I made this for a Geometry 101 Keepsake Challenge. I don't normally do challenges like this but I was taken by the word geometry. When I bought the fabric pack, I was sent (sight unseen) 8 fabrics. Of those 8 I had to use at least 6 and was allowed to add no more than 2 fabrics to the collection. I added in the orange and the light gray and decided to use all 10 fabrics. I had a windmill swirling around in my mind for several weeks so I decided to use that idea and came up with this. This was my first experience with FMQ and I was pretty pleased with it.

This is a baby quilt for a young lady who is like a daughter to me - I have known her all her life and her mom is my best friend. I made this for her after finding out she was having a girl. It was adapted from a pattern in Simply Fat Quarters from Fat Quarter Shop. Most of the fabrics used are from the Paris Flea Market collection by Moda. I pieced this quilt top and had it quilted by Teresa.

Here is the first quilt that I planned and designed - it was for my niece when she had her second child. The theme was polar bears in blue and green so I made bear paw blocks and set them on point. I appliqued some polar bears on the solid diamonds.

I bought this kit from Connecting Threads a few years ago when I first started thinking about quilting - it went with an online class that I followed on their website. I never got it made so when a friend's daughter was having a little boy I decided to make it for her. I did not know that these were her colors. I quilted it with some diagonal lines through the nine patches, some stars in the larger green squares, and some wavy lines in the border. 

I  made this quilt for the nephew of my son's girlfriend. I knew the theme was airplanes so when I found this fabric I bought it right away. I just found some cute fabrics to coordinate with it and made this easy and and sweet pattern. I quilted loops in the colored squares and airplanes in the white strips. The small strips have just one plane that moves to the left as it goes up and the large strips at the top and bottom have 2 larger planes. I feel like I challenged myself with the quilting was really pleased with the way it turned out.

Spring Into Christmas was a fun quilt to make with a new technique for me. I took a class at my LQS where a wonderful lady taught us. We had 2 classes - at the first one we learned the technique as we cut our fabric and completed at least one block. Our homework was to complete as many more blocks as we could. In our second class we learned how to make the curves in the trees, how to make the inner borders, and laid out our blocks into a pleasing design. I finished the quilt at home and had it quilted with Christmas lights by Teresa.

Block of the Month 2013 from Quilt Doodle Designs was a great BOM. I used Rhapsody of Reds fabric from Connecting Threads to make this striking quilt. I love the blocks that Cindy designed and the sashing and cornerstones really make the quilt extra special. This one has not yet been quilted but I plan to quilt it on my machine, doing something different in each block.
