Homer H. Hickam, Jr is one of the subjects of the 1999 movie October Sky based on his book Rocket Boys. Homer worked for NASA and retired in 1998 as the payload training manager for the International Space Station.

5. OCTOBER SKY - Based on the memoir, ROCKET BOYS, this is the story of four boys in a coal town who pursue their dream of going to college by entering the science fair with an exhibit about building and launching rockets. It's also a story of a father and son who don't see eye to eye even though they are just alike. The best scene is the one in which Homer tells his father who is his real hero.
