Zweck und Leitwort der Reihe
BearbeitenDie Everyman’s Library ist eine Buchreihe in englischer Sprache. Die einheitliche Reihe wurde 1906 vom Redakteur und Herausgeber Joseph Malaby Dent (1849–1926) mit der Absicht gegründet, eine Sammlung von Standardbüchern zu verschiedenen Themen zu einem Preis anbieten zu können, der sie für jedermann erschwinglich macht. Die Reihe wuchs unter der Redaktion von Ernest P. Rhys (1859–1946) schnell an.
Das Gesamtwerk gliedert sich in verschiedene Unterreihen: Biography (Biografie), Classical (Klassiker), Essays & Belles-Lettres (Essays & schöngeistige Literatur), Fiction (Belletristik), History (Geschichte), Oratory (Redekunst), Philosophy & Theology (Philosophie & Theologie), Poetry & Drama (Lyrik & Dramatik), Reference (Nachschlagewerke), Romance (Liebesromane), Science (Naturwissenschaft), Travel & Topography (Reise & Länderkunde) und For Young People (Für junge Leute). In der Reihe erschien auch eine Everyman’s Encyclopaedia.
Das Motto der Reihe ist dem mittelalterlichen Spiel Everyman, einer mittelenglischen Moralität Jedermanns Ladung (in modernem Englisch: Summoning of Everyman) entnommen, worin die Figur des Knowledge (Wissen, Erkenntnis) zu Everyman (Jedermann) sagt:

Fortführung der Reihe seit 1991
Bearbeiten1990 kaufte George Weidenfeld die Rechte an der Reihe und verkaufte sie im Jahr darauf an den Verleger David Campbell.[2] Seit 1991 führt der Verlag David Campbell Publishers, der 2003 zu Random House gehört, die Reihe fort, teils mit den Titeln aus der Backlist der „alten“ Everyman’s Library, teils mit neuen Titeln. Bis 2016 erreichte die „neue“ Everyman’s Library eine Gesamtauflage von 16 Millionen,[3] bis 2021 von 27 Millionen.
