Due to its increasing importance, this chapter attempts to firstly define this concept, its nature and scope. Secondly, it tries to introduce the trace of this type of human rights in the available documents. Then, the chapter deals with and discusses the reasons for growing importance of language human rights from at least three aspects, namely a) the exponential decline and loss of world's languages; b) the growing presence of English as the language of globalization; c) nationalism and the violation of language rights of the minority in the field of education. Finally, some suggestions and practical recommendations are provided.

At the turn of the 21st century, the ambitious plan of the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Declaration 1999) was issued to promote the mobility and employability of students and university staff, intercultural awareness, credits systems for higher education (HE), educational quality assessment and the marketing of HE. EMI was initially introduced in Europe in line with these policies as a tool to compete with Anglophone universities (Van der Wende 2000). The edited volume Internationalising Learning in Higher Education zooms in on EMI implementation in Spanish HE and some other contexts. It is structured around an introductory chapter and nine chapters in three parts. In the Introduction, the editor presents a brief account of the development and growth of EMI in Europe and other continents and sets the rationale for the volume. She also identifies the audience of the volume; ‘its primary market is EMI teachers and administrative staff who work at universities and researchers that focus on EMI implementation in higher education institutions’ (10). Part I, Policy into Practice, consists of two chapters. In Chapter 2, Elena Orduna Nocito and Gretchen Obernyer critically address the coherence of policies on professors’ qualifications for bilingual teaching in Spanish universities. Despite their professional profiles, university lecturers in Spain usually do not meet high levels of English proficiency, undermining the quality of bilingual education in Spanish universities. Part of the problem is that tertiary education in Spain does not follow coherent English language policies for EMI as, for example, universities allow for a C1, B2, or even a B1 on the Common European Framework Reference of languages (CEFR; Council of Europe 2001) as a gateway to EMI. The chapter also discusses the mechanisms of language certification in recruiting bilingual professors in Spain. The remainder of the chapter reports on the language skills of the candidates for teaching EMI subjects at the University Francisco de Vitoria (UFV) from 2016 to 2017. Corpus analysis of their performance in an English writing task indicates that the candidates have serious problems with writing skills that are vital for EMI. In Chapter 3, Gisela Sanahuja Vélez, Gabriela Ribes Giner, and Ismael Moya Clemente undertake a systematic review of 51 papers about EMI published in the past decade. The bibliographies of the papers (authorship, publication year, title, journal, country, and research methodology) are outlined, and their findings are sketched under the following categories:

Despite its practical implications, however, most of the research on this issue has been limited to its theoretical and conceptual dimensions. Conceiving the importance of this approach as well as considering the practical and applied dimensions of this newly emergent shift in ELT, this study is an attempt to study the Iranian ELT community's attitudes to some practical implications of CP in ELT. To acquire the Iranian ELT community's attitudes, a mixed-method approach was conducted. In the first phase, an interview survey was conducted with 8 applied linguists. Enjoying the content analysis of the data as well as the available literature on the topic, especially Akbari's (2008b) suggestions, a 10 item Likert-scale was prepared. To check the Iranian ELT community in the second phase, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 86 participants. Findings of this phase, as the main source of study, reveals that critical pedagogy is going to find a position in Iranian ELT community.

On the basis of their strength and significance, such approaches and directions have challenged some of the mainstream approaches' claims, principles and assumptions. Among them, critical applied linguistics can be highlighted as a new approach, developed by the Australian applied linguist, Alastair Pennycook. The aspects, domains and concerns of this new approach were introduced in his book in 2001. Due to the undeniable importance of this approach, as well as partial negligence regarding it in Iranian academic setting, this paper first intends to introduce this approach, as an approach that evaluates various disciplines of applied linguistics through its own specific principles and interests. Then, in order to show its step-by-step application in the evaluation of different disciplines of appli...

The first one is the private sector which has been the main contributor to the spread of English in its international version and the second one is the public sector which has been the representative of the localized version of English. Due to the low efficacy of the public sector, the private sector, as a booming market, is playing the main role of English education. Considering the fact, the authors first aim to introduce these two rival sectors. Then, based on the available literature on the topic, it is attempted to delve into the reasons of this growing struggle. The findings indicate that the future will be a scene of continuing presence of English in the private sector in its globalized version and English in the public sector in its localized version.

Regarding the English textbooks, as probably the most important component in any ELT program, especially in societies in which English is taught and learned as a foreign language, a notable transformation in topic and content selection has occurred alongside a reform in its approach and structure. Conceiving the importance of this reform, which has been mostly neglected in the available research on the topic, this paper aimed at comparing descriptively and analytically the type of topic and content which has been integrated in the previous and new high school English textbooks. Findings revealed that through applying critical pedagogy in the development of ...
