The foot is a complex structure that contains a lot of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The foot has to be pretty pliable during the initial phase of walking, when the foot hits the ground. Then it has to be more rigid during the push off phase.

When trying to improve arch height and foot strength, it’s important to work on strengthening the muscles in the foot and working on calf strength and hip stability.

This is most often caused by irritation/inflammation/overuse/strain of the patellar tendon (attachment of the quads).

Here are some great strengthening exercises to try during your rehab!  

1. Therapy ball short arc quads

This exercise strengthens the quad muscle but is less strenuous than many other quad exercises. 

* Place a therapy ball under your lower legs. Your knee should be fully supported.
* Without lifting the thigh, kick your foot toward the ceiling until your knee is straight
* Lower foot in a controlled manner

2. Single leg heel raises

This exercise strengthens the calf muscles, which is a key component to knee rehab

💪When dealing with shin splints, often we think about stretching and then strengthening our calf muscles. This is very important for most, but we also need to think about strengthening the front of our shins and working on our ankle dorsiflexion at the same time.

🦵If tightness through our calf muscles are leading to increased ankle plantarflexion and decreased ankle dorsiflexion, this will change how forces are absorbed through the lower extremity with running and jumping-related tasks.
