An incredibly beautiful but time-worn 1900s hand fan. A cream silk leaf is cut in areas to reveal a very fine gauze which has now split at the folds. The most exquisite decoration includes hand-painted periwinkles and little lilac flowers, fine metallic gold thread embroidery, dainty metallic gold lace and gold spangles. Luna Moth fan. Single white silk leaf painted in oil (?) in shades of green forms wings, decorated with brass, plated steel, silver-plated copper sequins green and blue sequins, gilt-silver yarns and net; gilt-silver insert center. Thirteen carved hornbeam (?) sticks painted green, silver and gilt-silver form body. Mother-of-pearl buttons on rivet, brass ring.

Queen Alexandra's Coronation Fan, circa 1901. The tortoiseshell guards of the fan are richly applied with diamonds set in silver in a design of roses, shamrocks, and thistles - the national emblems of England, Ireland and Scotland. The top of the front guard is set with the crowned 'A' cipher of Queen Alexandra for whom this fan was made at the time of the coronation of King Edward VII. The ostrich feathers have been artificially curled to maintain their shape.
