Keeping Track of Your Works in Progress (WIPs) in Crochet

Do you have LOTS of Works in Progress? (WIPS) If you crochet regularly, I KNOW you do! :)

Crocheting can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby, but keeping track of all your projects can be a challenge. From choosing patterns to selecting materials, there are a lot of decisions to make and details to remember. Today we’ll explore some of the best ways to keep track of your individual crochet projects so you can stay organized and on top of your crafting game.

Create a Project Journal

One of the best ways to keep track of your crochet projects is to create a project journal. This can be a simple notebook or a digital document where you can record details about each project, such as the pattern name, yarn used, hook size, and any modifications you made. You can also add pictures or swatches of the yarn you used to help you remember what you used. Having all of this information in one place can be incredibly helpful when you’re trying to remember what you did on a particular project or when you want to recreate a project later on.

Use a Project Management App

If you prefer to keep your records digitally, there are many project management apps available that can help you keep track of your crochet projects. Apps like Trello, Asana, and Todoist allow you to create individual projects, set deadlines, and add notes and pictures. You can also use these apps to create to-do lists for each project, so you can keep track of what you’ve completed and what still needs to be done.

Use a Crochet Planner

A crochet planner is a physical planner specifically designed for crocheters. These planners typically have pages for tracking your projects, as well as helpful resources like hook size and yarn weight charts, and even some inspirational quotes to keep you motivated. Using a crochet planner can help you stay organized and on track with your projects, and it can also be a fun way to personalize your crafting experience.

Use Ravelry (it's fun!)

Ravelry is a social networking site for crocheters and knitters that allows you to keep track of your projects, patterns, and yarn stash. You can use Ravelry to record your projects and add notes, pictures, and details about the yarn and pattern used. You can also search for patterns and connect with other crocheters for inspiration and advice. Ravelry is a great resource for crocheters of all levels, and it’s completely free to use.

Take Pictures

Taking photos can be so much fun and today it is so muh easier than in the 'old' days of cameras! One of the easiest ways to keep track of your crochet projects is to take pictures. This is especially helpful if you don’t have a lot of time to devote to journaling or using an app. Simply snap a picture of your project and save it to a folder on your phone or computer. You can also add notes to the picture file to remind yourself of any important details. This method is simple, effective, and can be done on-the-go!

Keeping track of your crochet projects doesn’t have to be a hassle and it can be fun!

Whether you prefer to use a physical planner, a digital app, or simply take pictures, there are many ways to stay organized and on top of your crafting game. By using one or more of these methods, you’ll be able to enjoy your crochet projects even more and create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces that you’ll be proud to show off.

Riding Hood Capelet

Let's enjoy the process of learning crochet! Hopefully, these tips will help you get started on your crochet journey and ensure that you enjoy every step of the way. So grab your crochet hook, sit back, and let's dive into the world of crochet!

  1. Start with Simple Projects: As a beginner, it's best to start with simple projects that will help you grasp the basic stitches and techniques. Begin with small and straightforward patterns such as dishcloths or scarves, and gradually work your way up to more complex designs. This will build your confidence and keep you motivated.

  2. Invest in Good Quality Yarn and Tools: Using high-quality yarn and tools can make a significant difference in your crochet experience. Opt for yarn that feels soft and comfortable to work with, and select hooks that suit your hand size and grip preference. Investing in good-quality materials will enhance your enjoyment and the overall outcome of your projects.

  3. Master the Basic Stitches: The foundation of crochet lies in mastering the basic stitches, such as the chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and half-double crochet. Take the time to practice these stitches until you feel comfortable with their execution. Once you've mastered the basics, you can explore more advanced stitches and patterns.

  4. Learn from Tutorials and Resources: There is a wealth of crochet tutorials available online, including video tutorials, written instructions, and helpful forums. Utilize these resources to learn new stitches, understand different techniques, and find inspiration for your projects. Joining a local crochet group or attending workshops can also provide valuable hands-on learning experiences.

  5. Practice Patience and Persistence: Crochet requires patience and persistence, especially when you encounter challenges or make mistakes. Remember that even experienced crocheters make errors. Embrace these moments as learning opportunities and don't be discouraged. Perseverance is the key to improving your skills and creating stunning crochet pieces.

  6. Gauge Matters: Gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows per inch in your crochet work. It's essential to match the gauge mentioned in the pattern to ensure the correct sizing and fit of your finished project. Take the time to make a gauge swatch before diving into a larger project, as it can save you from potential frustrations later on.

  7. Experiment with Colors and Yarns: Crochet offers endless possibilities when it comes to colors and yarns. Have fun exploring different color combinations and yarn textures to personalize your projects. Playing with colors can bring your creations to life and showcase your unique style. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy the process of experimenting.

  8. Take Breaks: Crocheting can be a relaxing and meditative activity, but it's important to take breaks and practice self-care. Avoid straining your hands and fingers by taking frequent breaks to stretch and rest. Engage in proper posture while crocheting to prevent discomfort or repetitive strain injuries. Prioritize your well-being and enjoy crochet for years to come.

  9. Connect with the Crochet Community: The crochet community is vibrant and supportive, both online and offline. Engage with fellow crocheters through social media platforms, online forums, or local crochet groups. Beginner Crochet Tips Part 8: Don't Be Afraid To Make Mistakes

The Sophia Poncho/Cape

In the world of crochet, as in life, mistakes are inevitable. It's important to remember that mistakes are not failures but rather stepping stones on the path to improvement. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, it's crucial to embrace mistakes as valuable opportunities for growth and learning.

  1. Mistakes are Part of the Learning Process

Crochet, like any skill, requires practice and patience. Making mistakes is an integral part of the learning process. Every stitch that doesn't turn out as intended provides valuable feedback and a chance to improve. Each mistake teaches you something new about tension, stitch placement, or pattern comprehension. Rather than being discouraged by mistakes, view them as valuable lessons that will ultimately make you a better crocheter.

  1. Undoing and Trying Again

One of the wonderful aspects of crochet is its inherent flexibility. If you make a mistake, you have the power to undo your stitches and try again. Unlike other crafts, where mistakes may be permanent or difficult to rectify, crochet allows for easy correction. Whether it's unraveling a few rows or simply undoing a few stitches, don't hesitate to hit the "reset" button and give it another go. Each attempt will bring you closer to achieving the desired outcome.

  1. Learning Problem-Solving Skills

When you encounter a mistake in your crochet project, it presents an opportunity to develop problem-solving skills. Rather than becoming frustrated or discouraged, approach the mistake as a puzzle to be solved. Analyze the issue, explore possible solutions, and experiment with different approaches. This process of problem-solving not only helps you rectify the mistake at hand but also equips you with valuable skills that can be applied to future projects and challenges.

  1. Creative Opportunities

Sometimes, mistakes can lead to unexpected and creative outcomes. A misplaced stitch or an accidental change in pattern can result in a unique design element or a happy accident that enhances your project. Embrace these serendipitous moments and allow yourself to explore new possibilities. Some of the most innovative crochet techniques and patterns have emerged from mistakes that turned into creative breakthroughs.

  1. Cultivating Perseverance

Crocheting is a journey that requires resilience and perseverance. Making mistakes and persisting through them builds your resilience as a crocheter. Remember that even the most skilled and experienced crocheters were once beginners who made their fair share of mistakes.

Each stitch that goes awry or pattern that doesn't turn out as planned, brings you one step closer to mastery. So, don't be afraid to make mistakes—undo, try again, learn from them, and celebrate the lessons they bring. With each mistake, you become a more skilled and confident crocheter.

Happy hooking!

Beginner Crochet Tips Part 7: Join a Crochet Community

Crochet is a beautiful and versatile craft that has captivated people for generations. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, joining a crochet community can greatly enhance your experience. These communities provide a platform for connecting with fellow enthusiasts, learning new techniques, and gaining inspiration for your crochet projects.

  1. The Power of Community

Crocheting can sometimes feel like a solitary activity, but being part of a community changes that dynamic. By joining a crochet community, you become part of a supportive network of like-minded individuals who share your passion for this craft. These communities provide a sense of belonging, where you can freely discuss your projects, seek advice, and celebrate your accomplishments.

  1. Learning Opportunities

One of the most significant advantages of being part of a crochet community is the abundance of learning opportunities. Whether you're a beginner or have been crocheting for years, there is always something new to discover. Online forums, social media groups, and dedicated crochet websites such as the National Organization CGOA offer a wealth of knowledge. You can learn new techniques, stitches, and patterns from experienced crocheters who are eager to share their expertise. Additionally, some communities organize workshops, webinars, and crochet-alongs, providing interactive learning experiences.

  1. Inspiration and Motivation

Crochet communities are a wellspring of inspiration. By engaging with fellow crocheters, you'll have access to a diverse range of projects and ideas that can spark your creativity. Seeing what others have accomplished can motivate you to explore new patterns, experiment with different yarns, or challenge yourself with more complex projects. Sharing your progress and receiving positive feedback from the community can fuel your enthusiasm and keep you motivated to continue your crochet journey.

  1. Problem Solving and Support

Crocheting can sometimes present challenges, whether it's deciphering a confusing pattern or troubleshooting a mistake in your project. Within a crochet community, you can seek guidance and assistance from experienced members who have likely encountered similar obstacles. From tips on tension control to suggestions for fixing mistakes, the community is there to offer support and help you overcome any hurdles you may encounter.

  1. Online Communities

The internet has revolutionized the way we connect and share information, and crochet communities have thrived in this digital era. Numerous online platforms cater to crocheters of all skill levels. Websites, social media groups, and forums like Ravelry, Crochetville, and Reddit's r/crochet provide vibrant spaces for crocheters to gather, interact, and learn. These communities often host discussions, pattern sharing, and even virtual events, allowing you to connect with fellow crocheters from around the world.

  1. In-Person Communities

While online communities offer convenience and accessibility, in-person crochet groups and classes have their own charm. Local yarn stores, community centers, and libraries often host crochet meetups and workshops where you can meet fellow enthusiasts face-to-face. These gatherings foster personal connections, allowing you to bond over your shared love for crochet and engage in real-time learning and collaboration.

Joining a crochet community is an enriching experience that opens doors to new friendships, knowledge, and inspiration. Whether you choose to engage with an online community or seek out in-person gatherings, the benefits are invaluable. You'll find yourself surrounded by a supportive network that will celebrate your successes, guide you through challenges, and fuel your passion for crochet. So, take that next step, join a crochet community, and embark on a fulfilling journey of creativity, learning, and connection. Happy crocheting!

Beginner Crochet Tips Part 6: Keep Your Work Organized

Beach Ball Tote Bag

Crochet is a wonderful hobby that allows you to create beautiful and intricate pieces of clothing, accessories, and home decor. However, with all the different patterns, hooks, yarns, and projects, it can be easy to get disorganized and lose track of your progress. In this blog post, we will explore some tips and tricks for keeping your work organized in crochet.

  1. Keep a Crochet Journal

One of the best ways to stay organized in crochet is to keep a crochet journal. This can be a physical notebook or a digital document where you can record all the important details of your projects. You can include information such as the pattern name, the hook size and type, the yarn brand and color, and any modifications or notes you have made to the pattern. This will help you keep track of your progress, as well as make it easier to reproduce a project in the future.

  1. Label Your Projects

Another useful tip is to label your projects. This can be done by attaching a label or tag to the project itself, or by creating a file folder or binder for each project. The label should include the project name, the date you started, where the pattern can be found and any other important information you want to remember. This will help you easily identify each project and keep them separated from one another.

  1. Organize your Yarn

Keeping your yarn organized is essential for staying on top of your crochet projects. One way to do this is to sort your yarn by color and type, and store it in clear plastic bins or containers. You can also label each container with the type and color of yarn it contains. This will help you easily find the yarn you need for your projects, and prevent you from buying duplicate yarn.

  1. Use a Project Bag

A project bag is a great way to keep all your crochet supplies in one place. You can use a tote bag or backpack to store your yarn, hooks, and other accessories, and keep it next to your favorite crocheting spot. This will make it easy to grab your project and start crocheting, without having to search for your supplies.

  1. Create a Work-in-Progress Basket

A work-in-progress (WIP) basket is a great way to keep track of all your current projects. You can use a basket or tote bag to store your unfinished projects, along with the pattern and any necessary supplies. You could even crochet your own WIP Bag using the Beach Ball Tote above! This will help you easily switch between projects, and prevent you from losing track of your progress.

Crochet is a fun and rewarding hobby, but it can be easy to get disorganized without proper planning. By keeping a crochet journal, labeling your projects, organizing your yarn, using a project bag, and creating a work-in-progress basket, you can stay on top of your projects and enjoy the process of creating beautiful pieces with ease.

Beginner Crochet Tips Part 5: Use Stitch Markers

Granny Stitch Capelet

There are several options for using stitch markers in crochet, and you can choose the one that works best for you. Here are some ideas:

  1. Safety pins: Small safety pins are a great option for stitch markers. They're easy to attach and remove, and you can use them to mark individual stitches or sections of your work.

  2. Locking stitch markers: These are specially designed stitch markers that lock in place, so they won't slip out of your work. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, and they're great for marking rounds or sections of your work.

  3. Paper clips: If you don't have any stitch markers on hand, paper clips can work in a pinch. They're not as secure as other options, but they'll help you keep track of your stitches.

  4. Yarn scraps: You can use small pieces of yarn as stitch markers. Simply tie a piece of yarn around your hook or into the stitch you want to mark.

  5. Bobby pins: Bobby pins are another option for stitch markers and they are MY FAVORITE. They're easy to slide into your work, and they come in a variety of sizes.

  6. Beads: You can use small beads as stitch markers. Thread the bead onto a piece of yarn and tie the yarn into a loop. Then, slide the loop onto your hook or into the stitch you want to mark.

  7. Clothespins: Miniature clothespins work great as stitch markers, and they're easy to find at craft stores. You can clip them onto your work to mark individual stitches or sections.

Remember, the most important thing is to choose a stitch marker that works for you and your project. Happy crocheting!

Beginner Crochet Tips Part 4: Learn the Basic Stitches

Build A Shell Blanket and Bonnet

Crocheting is a wonderful and creative way to spend your time. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, it's important to practice basic stitches regularly to improve your skills and build your confidence. In this blog post, we'll discuss the best ways to practice basic stitches in crochet.

  1. Choose the Right Yarn and Hook Before you start practicing, it's important to choose the right yarn and hook for your project. Different types of yarn and hooks can produce different results, so it's essential to select the right tools for your project. Start with a medium weight yarn and a hook size that feels comfortable in your hand.

  2. Use Practice Patterns There are many patterns available for practicing basic stitches in crochet. Practice patterns can help you focus on a specific stitch or technique, allowing you to master it before moving on to more advanced projects. Look for patterns that are simple and easy to follow, with clear instructions and diagrams.

  3. Start with Simple Stitches When you're just starting out, it's best to stick to simple stitches such as single crochet, double crochet, and half-double crochet. These stitches are the foundation of many crochet projects and will help you build your skills and confidence. Once you feel comfortable with these stitches, you can move on to more complex techniques.

  4. Practice Regularly Practice makes perfect, and the more you crochet, the better you'll get. Set aside some time each day or week to practice your stitches, even if it's just for a few minutes. Over time, you'll notice that your stitches become more even and your tension improves.

  5. Try Different Projects Don't be afraid to try different projects to practice your stitches. Experiment with different types of yarn and hooks, and try making small items such as coasters or dishcloths. These projects are quick and easy to make, and they allow you to practice your stitches without committing to a larger project.

Practicing basic stitches in crochet is essential for improving your skills and building your confidence. By choosing the right tools, using practice patterns, starting with simple stitches, practicing regularly, and trying different projects, you can become a confident and skilled crocheter in no time. Happy crocheting!

Beginner Crochet Tips Part 3: Practice Your Tension

Cookie Tape Measure Cover

Crocheting is a wonderful way to create beautiful and functional items such as blankets, clothing, and cute accessories. One of the most important aspect of crocheting is maintaining proper tension or gauge, which is the number of stitches per inch or centimeter. Without proper tension, your finished project may be too loose or too tight, resulting in an uneven or misshapen item.

Fortunately, there are several ways to practice and improve your tension in crochet. In this blog post, we will explore some of the best ways to do so.

  1. Use a Gauge/Tension Swatch

A gauge/tension swatch is a small sample of crocheted fabric that is worked up using the same yarn and hook size as your intended project. By creating a swatch, you can test your gauge and make any necessary adjustments before starting your project.

To create a gauge/tension swatch, chain a few stitches (depending on the stitch pattern you will be using) and work several rows of the pattern until the swatch measures at least 4 inches or 10 centimeters square. Measure the number of stitches and rows in the center of the swatch using a ruler or tape measure.

Compare the measurements to the gauge recommended in the pattern. If your measurements do not match the recommended gauge, adjust your hook size or tension and try again until you achieve the correct gauge.

  1. Practice with Different Yarns and Hooks

Different yarns and hooks can affect your tension, so it’s important to practice with a variety of materials. Try crocheting with different weights of yarn and different hook sizes to get a feel for how each affects your tension.

For example, if you usually crochet with worsted weight yarn and a 5.0 mm hook, try crocheting with a sport weight yarn and a 4.0 mm hook, then compare the tension of the resulting fabric.

  1. Take Breaks and Stretch

Crocheting for long periods of time can cause tension in your hands, wrists, and arms. This tension can affect your crochet tension, so it’s important to take breaks and stretch your muscles regularly.

Try taking a break every 30 minutes or so to stretch your hands and arms. You can also try some hand exercises to help relieve tension and improve your grip.

  1. Practice Consistently

As with any skill, consistent practice is key to improving your tension in crochet. Try to make time for crocheting every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This will help you develop muscle memory and improve your overall tension.

By practicing these techniques regularly, you can improve your crochet tension and create beautiful, even projects every time. Remember to be patient with yourself and enjoy the process – crocheting is a wonderful hobby that can bring joy and relaxation to your life!

How Much Yarn Will I Need to Crochet a Baby Blanket?

Build A Granny Stitch Baby Blanket in Any Size

Crocheting a baby blanket can be a fun and rewarding project, but it's important to have a good understanding of how much yarn you'll need before you get started. In this post, we will explore the three key factors that determine how much yarn you'll need for your baby blanket: yarn weight, crochet stitch, and blanket size.

Yarn Weight

The weight of your yarn is an important factor to consider when determining how much yarn you'll need for your baby blanket. Yarn weight refers to how thick or thin the yarn is, and it is usually indicated on the yarn label. Yarn comes in a variety of weights, from super bulky to lace weight. Thicker yarns require fewer skeins, while thinner yarns require more.

For a typical baby blanket, a medium weight yarn (also known as worsted weight) is usually a good choice. Worsted weight yarns typically come in skeins of 100-200 grams, and each skein can contain anywhere from 150 to 300 yards of yarn, depending on the brand.

Crochet Stitch

Different crochet stitches use different amounts of yarn. Some stitches use more yarn than others, so it's important to choose a stitch that will give you the look and feel you want for your baby blanket, while also using an appropriate amount of yarn.

For example, the double crochet stitch uses more yarn than the single crochet stitch, because it has more loops and requires more yarn to complete each stitch. If you're using a stitch that uses more yarn, you'll need to buy more skeins of yarn to complete your project.

Blanket Size

The size of your baby blanket is another important factor to consider when determining how much yarn you'll need. The larger the blanket, the more yarn you'll need to complete it.

Common crocheted baby blanket sizes are:

  • Receiving Blanket: 28"-36" square
  • Swaddle Blanket: 36" x 36" or 48" x 48" (suggested sizes)
  • Stroller/Car Seat Blanket: 30"-40" Rectangular
  • Crib Blanket: 40" x 60"

When you're planning to crochet a baby blanket, one of the most common questions that arises is, "How much yarn do I need?" The answer to this question depends on several factors, including the size of the blanket, the weight of the yarn, and the crochet stitch you'll be using.

Assuming you'll be using worsted weight yarn, a typical baby blanket will require between 700 to 1500 yards of yarn. However, keep in mind that the size of the blanket will greatly affect the amount of yarn needed. A smaller blanket, like a receiving blanket, will require less yarn than a larger crib blanket.

To get a more precise estimate of how much yarn you'll need, consider the weight of the yarn you'll be using. A 3.5 oz skein of worsted weight yarn typically has 220 yards of yarn. Based on this, you can calculate that a baby blanket will need 3-7 skeins of yarn, depending on the size of the blanket.

It's important to note that different types of yarn have different yardage amounts, so it's always a good idea to check the label to see how many yards are in a skein. Some larger skeins may contain enough yarn to complete a baby blanket with fewer skeins.

To estimate how much yarn you'll need for your baby blanket, you'll need to know the dimensions of the blanket you want to make (above). You can then use a yarn calculator to determine how much yarn you'll need based on the weight of your yarn and the stitch you'll be using.

Yarn Calculator

Using a yarn calculator is a great way to estimate how much yarn you'll need for your baby blanket. There are many free online yarn calculators available that can help you determine how much yarn you'll need based on the weight of your yarn, the stitch you'll be using, and the size of the blanket you want to make.

To use a yarn calculator, (link below) you'll need to know the weight and length of your yarn, the crochet stitch you'll be using, and the dimensions of your blanket. Once you enter this information, the yarn calculator will tell you how many skeins of yarn you'll need to complete your project.

Yarn Label

Another way to determine how much yarn you'll need for your baby blanket is to check the yarn label. Most yarn labels will provide an estimate of how much yarn is needed for a particular project based on the weight of the yarn and the size of the project.

Keep in mind that these suggestions are just estimates, and depending on the stitch and tension (gauge) you use, you may need slightly more or less yarn. It's always better to have extra yarn on hand, just in case! Who doesn't need more yarn anyway? :)

If you do end up with extra yarn, consider making a baby bonnet or cap to match the blanket. You can see some crochet patterns that are available at Too Cute Crochet here:

Is GAUGE Important When Crocheting From a Pattern?

Crochet Gauge: Why It Matters and How to Get It Right

If you're an experienced crocheter, you may be tempted to skip the step of checking your gauge before starting a new project. However, taking the time to get your gauge right can make all the difference in the finished product. Here's why crochet gauge matters and how to ensure that you're getting it right.

What is Crochet Gauge?

Crochet gauge refers to the number of stitches and rows that you can expect to achieve when you use a particular hook size and yarn weight. To determine your gauge, you'll need to make a small swatch of the pattern you'll be using and measure it to see how many stitches and rows you're getting per inch. Once you know your gauge, you can adjust your hook size or yarn weight to achieve the correct number of stitches and rows for your project.

Why Does Crochet Gauge Matter?

Getting your crochet gauge right is important for several reasons. First and foremost, it ensures that your finished project will turn out the way you intended. If your gauge is too loose or too tight, your project may end up too big or too small, and the stitch pattern may not look right. Additionally, getting your gauge right can help you avoid running out of yarn or having to buy more than you need. By knowing how many stitches and rows you can expect to achieve with a particular hook size and yarn weight, you can estimate how much yarn you'll need to complete your project.

How to Get Your Crochet Gauge Right

To get your crochet gauge right, you'll need to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Choose your yarn and hook. Start by selecting the yarn and hook that your pattern calls for. If you're not using a pattern, choose the yarn and hook that you want to use for your project.

  2. Make a swatch. Crochet a swatch that is at least 4 inches by 4 inches using the stitch pattern you'll be using for your project.

  3. Measure your swatch. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the number of stitches and rows per inch in your swatch. Make sure to measure in the same direction as you crocheted your swatch.

  4. Adjust your hook size or yarn weight. If your gauge is off, you can adjust your hook size up or down to achieve the correct number of stitches and rows per inch.

  5. Crochet another swatch. Once you've adjusted your hook size, crochet another swatch and measure it to make sure you've achieved the correct gauge.

By taking the time to get your crochet gauge right, you can ensure that your finished project turns out the way you intended. While it may be tempting to skip this step, it's worth the extra time and effort to get it right. Happy crocheting!
