Informed by the centenary of World War I, the theme of 'trauma' was chosen, and the presentations over the lively three-day meeting included a wide range of topics such as trauma in literature and text; managing trauma in clinical practice related to domestic violence and abuse; a theatrical performance involving trauma, personal history and theory; and using humanities in clinical education to offer new ways of making sense of and addressing trauma. To underscore the value of taking such a diverse approach, it is worth considering that trauma in the psychosocial sense is a relatively recent arrival to the medical and social sciences. It was only in the 1970s that post-traumatic stress disorder found its way into the lexicon of those helping Vietnam veterans and only in 1980 that it found its way into DSM III. Of course, there had been earlier attempts to characterize the malaise of serving or ex-combat personnel with terms such as 'nostalgia', "shell shock', 'combat fatigue' and so on finding their way into the literature in earlier conflicts. The point, however, is that the difficult sequelae of adverse experiences had been largely formulated, conceptualized, discussed, and perhaps consoled outside of formal medical settings for much of human history. Therefore, it is no surprise that these experiences have found prominent roles in drama, literature and visual media, as imaginative works have often been the most important and accessible fora in which such experiences could be understood and communicated. As one of the earliest documented forms through which stories are told and appreciated, the legends of classical antiquity have featured prominently in attempts to make sense of trauma. Hence, Laura McKenzie reflects on Robert Graves' attempts to grapple with his own World War I experience through his work, 'The Anger of Achilles'. The First World War also transformed the way experiences of this kind were written about in the contemporary fiction of the period. As Samantha Walton describes, this can be seen in the way that inter-war writers addressed nature, and the way that nature was evoked almost nostalgically, as something that had been sullied by human destruction yet nevertheless remained intertwined with human life. Sometimes, accounts of trauma are metaphorical and allegorical. As Jenny Cochrane argues here, the story of Dr. Doolittle represents a response to the trauma in the trenches of World War

His multifaceted roles - as psychiatrist, soldier and writer - inform his literary production, in particular the semi-autobiographical novels Memoria de Elefante (Elephantine Memory), Os Cus de Judas (Land at the End of Nowhere) and Conhecimento do Inferno (Knowledge of Hell), as well as his letters and chronicles. The thesis looks at the different ways in which Lobo Antunes' oeuvre articulates the different perspectives within the contexts of mental institutions and war. Issues such as trauma (individual and collective), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and the cathartic role of writing are analysed in detail. The brutal and traumatic realities of war and post-colonial trauma are intertwined in the novels in the intricate and complex writing that is characteristic of Lobo Antunes. His writing ethos e...

tišek usava o nome de Jorge Listopad, mais próximo do seu nome checo real;
tura extraterritorial checa (Kafka, Kundera)

Atkin’s writing, in a style that will engage both specialists and nonspecialists, introduces the reader to the general theoretical framework behind labyrinths, their history and symbolism, applying it to Saramago’s novels.

The comparative approach takes into consideration the style and content of both writers and their approximations across some of their works.

It aims to explore the deeper relationship between literature and medical disciplines, in this particular instance, psychiatry. It analyses the two different discourses as 'master narratives' (medical discourse) and 'counter narratives' (literature and its images). Through the concepts of Madness and Hell, Lobo Antunes creates a novel very much align with the Anti-Psychiatry movement, a novel stemmed from the unhappy experiences he had when practicing psychiatry (he was a psychiatrist before dedicating his full time to writing). However, this doesn't mean that the bleak novel is without hope. It is by establishing a 'disease-subject' that Lobo Antunes' novel fulfills its role as a useful literary source for the betterment of psychiatry and the awareness of mental illness and its treatment/consquences. Ultimately, literature (specially this novel) can play an important part in the understanding of patients and in the evolution of modern medicine.

Mudança: the political dimension in Vergílio Ferreira's works as a strategy against trauma Abstract: This article aims to explore the importance and significance of the political dimension of the work of Vergilio Ferreira, in particular, his novel Mudança (1991) and his short-story O Jogo de Deus. The political dimension of the author's work is a complex theme, not only because of its complex articulation of a political position that rejects teleological ideologies, but also because of the attitude of the main aesthetical discourse of the time, Neo-Realism, which seem to reject and ignore Ferreira's work. However, its importance cannot be overlooked, especially taking into consideration its existentialist vision of liberty and how it can be configured as an answer for the trauma of Salazar's dictatorship, both on an individual and collective level.

Thus, Keats coins a concept that will have repercussions not only in his own aesthetic vision and that of his contemporaries, but also (and especially) in the centuries that followed it.
By challenging the certainty of the claims to knowledge common to his epoch, whilst still embracing reality, Keats acknowledge the necessity of uncertainty and doubt. This acknowledgment was paramount not only for the singularity of his poetry but also for his influence in fields not restricted to literature.
This article aims to analyse the impact of the concept in its historical context and beyond, namely in the works of political theorist Roberto Unger (where the concept is crystallised and expanded) and novelist José Saramago, where its influence is subtle but crucial for the novelist’s overcoming of the political and ideological shackles is oeuvre is limited by.
It is also its objective to explore the potential of the concept in the aesthetic, political and human dimensions. By doing so, it hopes to unleash the vitality, vibrancy and importance of Romantic literature for the contemporary world.
