Recent changes
- Special:NewPages now has the OOUI look. [1]
Problems
- The MediaWiki version that was released two weeks ago was late to some Wikimedia wikis. This was because of bugs. It was on all wikis 30 July. [2][3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 August. It will be on all wikis from 9 August.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 August at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 8 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Give your feedback about changes to Special:Block
Hello,
You are receiving this message because you are a top user of Special:Block on this wiki. Thank you for the important work that you do. There is a discussion happening about plans to improve Special:Block with the ability to set new types of blocks. To get the best design and new functions added, it is essential that people who use the tool join the discussion and share their opinions about these changes.
Instead of a full site wide block, you would be able to set a Partial Block. A user could be blocked from a single page, multiple pages, one or more namespaces, from uploading files, etc. There are several different ways to add this feature to Special:Block. Right now Important decisions are being made about the design and function.
Please review the page on Meta and share your feedback on the discussion page. Or you can reach me by email Also, share this message with anyone else who might be interested in participating in the discussion.
I appreciate any time that you can give to assist with making improvements to this feature. Cheers, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 02:00, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- Apologizes for posting in English.

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 August at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 15 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The developers are planning more ways to block users. This could be blocking someone from just a page or a namespace. You can read more. You can leave feedback on the talk page. [5]

FlickreviewR PDM
A file tagged as PD-author, Flickreview requested and passed. It would certainly be interesting to discuss accepting Flickr PDM as PD-author (which was clearly the intention in this case anyway), but this is not how we currently deal with Flickr PDM. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:11, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- It worked that way, until this happened. How about this: pass with {{PD-Layout}} unless {{PD-Author}} is also transcluded? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:24, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:02, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

- The 2018 Community Wishlist Survey begins on 29 October. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals from 29 October to 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 16 November to 30 November.
- Legacy JavaScript global variables have been deprecated for seven years. They will soon be removed from all wikis. Gadgets and scripts that use them will stop working. You can test your community's gadgets on "group0" wikis. For example Test Wikipedia or mediawiki.org. The legacy JavaScript global variables are already disabled there. You can read the migration guide to fix old scripts. [7]

- Done deleted. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:04, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi, there, I noticed that you made the last edit there. I think this should be converted to using {{Mbox}} so the text will be shown at regular size. The current "fine print" may be rather difficult to read. De728631 (talk) 14:31, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about this myself. {{Mbox}} has a very different style and I don't think I saw any of Template:Mbox#Examples being used on user talk pages. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:01, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- Ok. But the font size in the message section of Discussion-notice should be increased. I can't figure out how to do this in the current version, so do you know where this is controlled? De728631 (talk) 12:21, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- I think it's just the font-size CSS property. Why do you think the font should be enlarged? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 12:38, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- The question should rather be: "Why is the message part set in a font that is much smaller than the default font size on this Wiki?" The inter-language links are always this small in templates, so that is not an issue, but the message, i.e. the main part of the template should come across as any usual text on a talk page. This is a notification for users that they are subject to a potentially contentious discussion, so there should be no fine print for the notification. De728631 (talk) 16:00, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, this change did the trick for text using the Latin alphabet. Strangely other alphabets like Bengali or Cyrillic cannot be enlarged by this parameter. De728631 (talk) 16:36, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- That's weird. On my end I don't see the template having small fonts. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:39, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Huh, this is weird. Apparently, this whole font size problem seems to be a Firefox issue. E.g. when I load Template:Discussion-notice/ml in MS Edge, the font size is just as it should be, but Firefox shows it like in
<small>
tags. *confused* De728631 (talk) 16:52, 23 August 2018 (UTC)- I use firefox too :). Could it be an issue related to display language? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:53, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think so. I didn't change the display language for MS Edge, and it doesn't matter if I use English or German for display in FF. De728631 (talk) 16:59, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- See also File:Screenshot ENWP List of ISO 639-1 codes.png for an example of what I'm getting in Firefox. De728631 (talk) 17:13, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- This seems to be related to the Wikimedia skin. I'm still using MonoBook for convenience, but after changing to Vector, the fonts are now more or less equally sized. On the other hand, I really don't like te layout. I might report this at Phab. De728631 (talk) 17:21, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I use Vector usually, but I don't see a difference in size between the text in the template and the text outside even if I change my skin to Monobook --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:25, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- What happens when you increase the default font size in your Firefox settings? I'm using 17 points. De728631 (talk) 17:44, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I'm using 16. Let me check --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:45, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I see, If I increase the size to something like 18 that old es template do not respond to the change. Looking at the CSS only
.mw-body-content { font-size: 0.875em }
is relevant. Then I see the emptylang=""
. If either that attribute is removed, or that attribute is "es", then everything's fine. I guess it's just incorrect usage of {{Lang}} causing broken html triggering undefined behavior then. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:54, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Well, it's not just the template but the general Wiki-appearance that is bugged. Did you have a look at the screenshot link I posted above? See the interwiki languages on the left and the 3rd column of the list article. De728631 (talk) 17:57, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I would blame language support. From what I see at 20, if lang="ilo" the computed font-size is 12px, but if lang="is" then it is 15px. Both have their original CSS attribute set at 0.75em --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:03, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Afaik, the individual Wikipedias don't have any language support but display their default language?! So where at List of ISO 639-1 codes did you switch to Icelandic? De728631 (talk) 18:09, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- I mean, language support in browser / system. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:16, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, I see, and it looks like you are right. In my Firefox settings the default language for website display was German. I switched it to English and now at least the font sizes in Wikipedia are alright, but I'm still seeing Template:Discussion-notice/scn in small print. De728631 (talk) 18:29, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Idk... scn behaves like ilo instead of is --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:35, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- @De728631: After skimming through https://manishearth.github.io/blog/2017/08/10/font-size-an-unexpectedly-complex-css-property/ I think I know why. This is some per-language base font-size. If you go to "Advanced..." in the "Fonts & Colors" preferences you'll see the configuration for all sorts of writing systems. scn seems part of the "Other Writing Systems" type so if you want the base font size to be increased for scn, you gotta increase the base font size for "Other Writing Systems". The default font size selector only applies to what Firefox consider as Latin-based --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:14, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks for digging this out. Actually this part of Firefox sucks because you have to adjust any possible writing system individually, e.g. Greek, Cyrillic, Kannada, Thai and whatnot. They definitely need a menu item for "All Writing Systems". De728631 (talk) 20:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

template:lang on commons
Hi, Zhuyifei. It looks lile your last changes on emplate:Lang broken something on commons, now, when i write
, it add carriage returns in rendering (as example : File:Mengchong.png). This is not the standard behavior in other wikis and until now in commons, it could break lot of pages. Perhaps, should I add some tags now ?Popolon (talk) 12:27, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
- Use
|tag=span
. Yes many things were broken, but more things would be broken if it wasn't done. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:22, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
Embedded data warning
Hi, I noticed that Embedded Data Bot added warning messages to "File:En-us-colonelcy.flac" and "File:En-us-zowerswopped.flac". The sound files sound all right, and I'd like to use them in the English Wiktionary – do they really need to be deleted? Can the problem with the files (if there is one) be fixed in some way? Thanks. — SGconlaw (talk) 10:17, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Deprecated. Use ... instead
. An example isarticle_text
which is nowpage_title

- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 2
The second issue of the Timeless newsletter is out.
The news: Themes are coming to Timeless! Your infobox and navbox templates in particular are probably going to look absolutely horrible in the new built-in night mode.
For more information, background, plans and progress updates, please see the full issue on Meta, complete with a ridiculous list of phabricator task links, gratuitous mention of other skins, and me complaining about the current state of MediaWiki skinning in general.
Request for assistance
Hello. I uploaded an edited version[15] of another image. The license on the original was adequate,[16] but apparently my attempt triggered your bot. Can you tell me how to correct that? Many thanks, Kablammo (talk) 18:31, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
- I removed that {{Flickreview}}. DWs don't need to be reviewed again if the originals are already reviewed IMO. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:48, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
