Subcategorization

[edit]

Please don't add categories when there's already a subcat of it for the file. See Commons:Overcat. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 13:24, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not reasonable to assume that all child sexual abuse takes place because of pedophilia. For example, children are sometimes raped in wars by soldiers who have no pedophile orientation per se. So, I am not sure if the categorization is correct.--Sanya3 (talk) 19:43, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Вы создали категорию {Folk calendar of Ukraine}. Может как-то объединить категории иллюстраций {Folk calendar of Russia} и {Folk calendar of Ukraine}? --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 12:37, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--Лобачев Владимир (talk) 21:38, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

С уважением, Лобачев Владимир (talk) 22:02, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--Sanya3 (talk) 04:11, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

05:03, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Sanya3,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Ghirlandajo (talk) 09:37, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Russian chauvinism has no place on Wikimedia. There are plenty of Ukrainian churches on the territory of Russia, including churches that are currently part of the Kievan Patriarchate, as well as Greek Catholic churches.--Sanya3 (talk) 18:56, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
--Stolbovsky (talk) 10:56, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
--Stolbovsky (talk) 10:59, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

--Микола Василечко (talk) 05:51, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sanya3 (talk) 03:22, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sanya3 (talk) 23:38, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Mykola Swarnyk (talk) 03:04, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

--Sanya3 (talk) 05:40, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sanya3 (talk) 07:56, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation

[edit]

Zdravo Ukrajinac (I hope you understand SH :)), I owe you an explanation regarding to this revert. If you check this and this category, you'll see that countries are using the same subdivision terms (department, province) for different subdivision levels (first, second), therefore if you put four different terms (department/province/region/state) result will be messy (i.e. level mixing) and visually large, especially for transcontinental countries like Russia or Turkey (eight templates in total). That's why I believe it's a bad idea. --Orijentolog (talk) 13:52, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pryvit! Yes, I understand. It's easy for Ukrainians to understand others Slavic languages. The reason I put them all in that way is that I noticed that different countries use all these different terms for first-level subdivision. I didn't think there was any mixing with second-level. Just different names in different countries.--Sanya3 (talk) 05:00, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating duplicate categories

[edit]

Hi Sanya3, please don't create duplicate categories like you did at Category:Girls playing and Category:Boys playing. If you want to rename a category, please use Commons:Categories for discussion. Multichill (talk) 19:04, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you ignoring my message and undoing my edits? Multichill (talk) 10:14, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The categories I created are more appropriate in English and correspond with other similar categories.--Sanya3 (talk) 18:51, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Grouse in art, etc.

[edit]

Hi Sanya - please note 1 grouse, 2 grouse; the word does not take an 's' in the plural (like e.g. sheep, deer, fruit, etc.). The old category names were correct, I am moving them all back. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 23:33, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Although the dictionary says the plural can also be used, the singular form is traditionally used. I was actually thinking of maybe changing it back, so thanks for taking care of that. --Sanya3 (talk) 04:16, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Раніше я створив категорію Category:Ukrainians with bandura. Category:Ukrainians women with bandura? Category:Ukrainians men bandurists чи Category:Ukrainians men with bandura?

--Sanya3 (talk) 07:14, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mykola Swarnyk: ? --Микола Василечко (talk) 07:20, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Female bandurists.--Sanya3 (talk) 07:21, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
--Sanya3 (talk) 04:47, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Female bandurists. --Sanya3 (talk) 04:48, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Mykola Swarnyk (talk) 07:38, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian bibles cat

[edit]

I disagree with your page move, all bibles in Category:Bibles by language have "bibles" in a small "b". Veverve (talk) 10:00, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In the English language, the word Bible is usually capitalized when referring to actual Scriptures. As is the case with a number of other categories on Wikimedia.--Sanya3 (talk) 17:10, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is not the convention adopted in this case on WCommons. Therfore, I still oppose your cat move. Veverve (talk) 17:25, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If there was a rule adopted regarding this, please direct me to it.--Sanya3 (talk) 19:22, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can clearly see the convention at Category:Bibles by language, there is no written rule. Your page move made the category the only one with a capital "B". Veverve (talk) 21:22, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Convention around a mistake is meaningless. It contradicts the rules of the English language.--Sanya3 (talk) 21:37, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Meta categories vs. categories requiring permanent diffusion to zero

[edit]

Hello, Sanya3. I've noticed that you create categories like Category:Pickup trucks in Kyiv by color and use the {{Catcat}} template on them. The correct template for categories like that is {{Metacat}}. That is because the subcategories are grouped by a shared characteristic. In the case of Category:Pickup trucks in Kyiv by color, that characteristic is color; each subcategory is for any and all trucks in Kyiv that are silver.

Please use the metacat template where it is appropriate instead of the catcat template. If you would like help determining when to use each one, feel free to ask. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:29, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for writing. I was using the {{Catcat}} template because the {{Metacat}} template is an eyesore, as it takes up so much of the page and they accomplish the same thing, namely signifying that this category should only include categories. I am not sure I quite understand why it's necessary for us to use the bulky template. If we do need to use it, then it needs to be made much more efficient, so it doesn't looks so large in categories. --Sanya3 (talk) 21:34, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The meaning of the two is not quite the same. With a metacategory, the entries in each subcategory have something in common. In a category tagged with the catcat template, they don't have to.
As to your other point, though, when I look at categories that use the two templates the templates seem to take up about the same amount of vertical space (the catcat one is wider, though, taking up the whole screen width). I wonder why they would look different on two different people's screens. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:05, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's too big because it includes too much unnecessary information.--Sanya3 (talk) 04:39, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moving categories

Btw of this, there's a discussion. Possible changes come after the end of the said discussion whatever it's the outcome. Please don't touch them while the discussion is ongoing. -- Blackcat 09:06, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that you are the one who broke that rule and made a problematic mass move of all the "girl group" categories without completing any discussion. --Sanya3 (talk) 17:29, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Males by hair color by country

[edit]
Category:Category:Males by hair color by country
Category:Category:Women by hair color by country

Which one of these are correct? Should the categories be named Males/Female by hair color by country? Or should they be called Men/Women by hair color by country --Trade (talk) 21:31, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should follow do 'Males/Female'. That seems to be the norm
Category:Women with black hair in China
Category:Male gray hair in the United Kingdom

Which of these naming forms are correct? --Trade (talk) 21:34, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think the first one makes the most sense.--Trade (talk) 00:01, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know of any other categories that sorts people after appereance, gender and country? For comparison --Trade (talk) 00:01, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think males/females is the proper category, although eventually I can foresee separate categories for men/boys and women/girls.--Sanya3 (talk) 06:07, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A category named "women" should not include girls, and a category named "men" should not include boys. If you want to include minors, go with males and females. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:16, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Males/females should be the parent categories that men/boys and women/girls are in.--Sanya3 (talk) 06:22, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Female/male black hair in X
Women/men with black hair in X

So these are the correct names? --Trade (talk) 22:30, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. --Sanya3 (talk) 03:15, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hospital ward vs hospital department

[edit]

Hi, it was a while ago, but do you remember why you created this redirect [2]? To me, a "hospital ward" (a room in a hospital for multiple patients) is not the same as a "hospital department" (relates to a medical speciality such as pediatrics or surgery). It's not a big thing, just wondering. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:58, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, in the US it is the same thing as a department. I would surmise it is so in other English-speaking countries, but I won't presume. --Sanya3 (talk) 06:38, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Portraits of Ukraine vs Portrait paintings from Ukraine

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if there is a reason that your template Template:PortraitpaintingfromUkrainecat puts years into a decade of Category:Portraits of Ukraine rather than one from Category:Portrait paintings from Ukraine by decade like other countries in Europe.

As it is now, there is a disconnect between the portrait paintings for a certain year and the overall portrait paintings from Ukraine (for example, Category:19th-century portrait paintings from Ukraine) because the decades of portrait paintings are skipped.

Also, I tried to add the template to the Category:Works-by-year templates for Ukraine list but it did not seem to take. I am pretty new to this. MarbleGarden (talk) 01:09, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
