File:Genitals of a teenage boy.jpg II

Hello Russavia,

please give me an explanation why you decided to delete this, by e-mail if necessary. As I'm the admin who decided to keep the image, I would have appreciated it if you would at least have informed me without me having to ask. Thanks. --Rosenzweig τ 19:01, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Unresolved problem

Hello. I understand that maybe it's uninteresting for You to solve long conflicts, but I should remind to You that we still don't have a solution even on the small part of the conflict. After mass-edits of my opponent and edit-warring I was the first who stopped this war, but it's not mean that I agree with such situation. Today downloaded by me files are in the redaction of my opponent, also he have not agreed with the previous solution and changed new version, while he don't touch the files which are uploaded by him. Look, I don't want to revert his mass-edits, because it will be a waste of time as he will continue edit-warring (in Russian and English wikipedia he was several times blocked for it). So please if You don't want to continue mediation make me know about it and we'll try to find smbd else who has more strong nerves. Sincerely, --Ліонкінг Lion King 10:22, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Is the other editor Interfase? If so, kindly alert him to this thread. If was another editor, then please try to discuss it with them; and perhaps bring it to Interfase's attention; seeing as I believe the two of you should be able to work together with some of the basic principles in mind that were raised at COM:AN. Please give me just one example of what you are talking about. I will make a decision on whether I want to try and mediate based on what I see with one example. russavia (talk) 16:45, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Hey. I just now noticed that File:Genitals of a teenage boy.jpg, the image you deleted and that caused some controversy recently, was uploaded by a user whose images I nominated for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Hank1357 (for completely different reasons). In the deletion request, I pointed out how File:Genitals of a teenage boy.jpg is from the same set of images as the images uploaded by another user (User:ASETC). Since you deleted one picture of the series, could you look at the other pictures and delete those as well? Or, preferably, delete all the images from the other user as well, since - presumably - just like User:Hank1357, he did not have permission to upload those images, either. --Conti| 19:00, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

I have applied COM:PRP to the photos. Thanks, russavia (talk) 19:22, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Expocitytrans 2010, Vagonmash pavilion, model of NeVa metro train (5021016454).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I'm thinking of DRVing this, and wanted to better understand your original request: are you arguing that the design needs to be CC-BY-SA, or that the very act of copying it on to my arm needs to be somehow released as well? Ironholds (talk) 14:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

As mentioned in Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Wikipedia tattoos both the design itself, and the derivative work (i.e. the tattoo as done on the arm), need to be released under a free licence. Due to licencing requirements that come with CC-BY-SA, GFDL, etc, I would recommend getting the tattoo design released into public domain. That get's the design out of the way. Then there is the issue of the design being tattooed onto one's body; this creates new copyright (even if the design itself is public domain), and again I would suggest getting permission from the tattoo artist to release their work into the public domain. A photo of the resultant work could then be licenced under PD, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, GFDL, etc. Unless all links in the copyright chain are under a free licence, we can't host those images on any of our projects. russavia (talk) 14:29, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
How can the tattoo possibly be a derivative work of the design? It's an onerous but non-creative copy of one design in one medium to a different medium. This is my confusion here. Ironholds (talk) 06:31, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Sweat of the brow would come into this as well. Whilst it is a "copy" of the design, it still takes skill on the part of the tattoist do to the tattoo; and for this copyright would be claimed over their work. russavia (talk) 07:17, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
The tattoos were applied in the United States (Five and Dime in Oakland, to be precise). No such doctrine exists in US copyright law. Ironholds (talk) 20:29, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to respond. If you think they could be undeleted, I would suggest taking them to deletion review, but I do still believe the tattooist holds copyright over their work. Think of the Mona Lisa; the painting is in the public domain, but derivatives of the work still attract copyright ({{PD-art}} aside). Might be an idea to see what rest of community thinks if you want to do it that way. Cheers, russavia (talk) 00:40, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, derivatives that include a creative element. The crucial word is "derivative", not "copy". I'll take it to DRV now. Ironholds (talk) 22:21, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

FOP vs non-free graffity

Flickr uploads and categories

I think you are doing a good work uploading files from Flickr, but I think it's better to upload them without categories than to upload them this way. I'm still trying to clean a bunch of photographies of Barcelona with a lot of redundant and incorrect categories.

I suggest not copying Flickr tags into categories, since they work in a completely different way.--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:54, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Good example, super naff. If you would like all the categories stripped from a flickr set, apart from an acceptable sub-list of categories, let me know and I can hack a little script to do it (VFC is a dog for more than a few hundred images). Thanks -- (talk) 17:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Since there has been some movement on this page today (after I closed the deletion request and proceed with deleting the first images), I guess you might want to have a look at what's happening. I put the deletion of the remaining pictures on hold after hearing from Saper on IRC, and I don't want to delete them without seeing a third opinion. odder (talk) 22:52, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

What to do with re-registered aircraft

AgustaWestland AW119 Koala Ke that was once ZK-ISR is now VH-UCL (have photographs of it and shall upload them soonish). Almost got a tour of the Air-Crane but REX/PEL-AIR were doing an engine run near-by, so missed out. Bidgee (talk) 01:44, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey mate, we would simply start a new category for VH-UCL. If we had aircraft by c/n this might be a good idea if we wanted the same airframe (as per with ships with the IMO), but that might be a right pain in terms of category standardisation; what you think? russavia (talk) 14:03, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Russavia, another user left a note at my talk expressing concern that the files such like file:Palestine Nazareth Nazareth NK18444 (3322394792).jpg could be possible copyright violations, as they are marked on flickr with "Therefore, anyone can republish this photo anywhere else in the Internet or any other publication in accordance to the legal copyright status of the photo. This photo has been published exclusively for non-commercial didactical and historical purposes to illustrate the inalienable Right of Return of the Palestinians to their 1948 lands and homes in Palestine." It does seem though, based on the additional copyright disclaimer in text at flickr, somewhat questionable that it is correctly licensed at flickr with cc-by-2.0. The wording "At the very least, you are free to copy/link this photo as long as you recognize the source. " indicates that at the very least the license should have been cc-by-sa, but the wording as quoted above makes we wonder if the flickr uploader are entitled to license it as cc-by without nc.

The user who approached me may not be aware that it's been years since I was an admin (or indeed active) at this project. I'm not going to do any more follow-up on this, but I would appreciate if you could share your thoughts on this, or link me to a prior discussion if the has been one. Best regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 11:16, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Horse photos

Hi Russavia, I see that you nominated for deletion a bunch of photo of horses which contain a diagonal watermark saying "Heather Abounader Photography." I understand why these were nominated (diagonal watermark an obvious problem), but my question is this: The uploader (a banned sockpuppet, by the way) who pulled them all off Flickr appears to have uploaded dozens, if not hundreds of images. In the case of the Heather Abounader photos, some have watermarks at the bottom, ( see this category and my question is if some of those can be kept -- most are pretty good quality and would be useful. And, if so, does someone have to go in and manually crop to remove all the watermarks, and are there people working on commons who routinely do stuff like that - I don't have good photo editing software to do so myself. Any thoughts, comments, or people who you could refer to me for more help would be appreciated. Thanks! Montanabw (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Montanabw, you are right that many of the images can have the watermarks removed, and I have not nominated those particular images. If you would like to give it a go at removing the watermarks from some images by cropping, you can utilise User:Cropbot. It's very easy to use -- simply follow the instructions on that page. Ping me if you have any problems with it. Cheers, russavia (talk) 19:08, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Categories

You're uploading images with bad categories.

If you have a couple of minutes I can help you stop making the mistakes.

First, you see, Categories are not tags. Categories don't describe images (that's what "description" field is for) but rather they organize images within Commons structure by topic.

For example:

Hi Russavia

I was wondering if you'd seen google images for 'Putin meteor' and how they show him in different poses riding the meteor ? They are based on a series of topless images of him out in the woods, which you'd find by google imaging 'Putin Horse' and I don't think the half naked ones are free images, so it's not possible to describe the press reaction to the meteorite or the meme with the actual images themselves. If someone wanted to do that, they'd have to assemble it all. I don't care to return the category at all, but I'm just wondering with the clear strong link, why it doesn't belong is all. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Flikr uploads

Hi. Note that all these uploads got not right category, since Category:Colonia is a category for a taxon of birds. They should be move to Category:Colonia del Sacramento or at least Category:Colonia Department. I moved some, but I think is faster with a bot. Thanks. --Andrea (talk) 10:49, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Request for help

Hi Russavia, thanx again for your help @ id:wp. I once again need help from you. I've posted request for rollback rights in the requests for right section where I've highlighted the need in the light of my categorization/ editing experience. Unfortunately, one sysop has misinterpreted it to be an aim-avenue for editwarring, which it is not, if you read my messages there / see my posted links. You also note my categorization of some of your uploads. I request your kind intervention in the matter. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 13:21, 25 February 2013 (UTC).

Hey, I've commented there. Let me know if all is good in a day or two with it, and I'll look again for you. Cheers, russavia (talk) 13:50, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. for your support on Commons:Requests_for_rights#Hindustanilanguage. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 14:44, 3 March 2013 (UTC).

What is the problem with this image? Jespinos (talk) 16:10, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. Nothing is wrong with the image; it was placed into the delete category in error. Thanks for picking it up, I've also renamed it as part of cleanup. Cheers, russavia (talk) 16:34, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Deletion

How do you even come to these deletion requests? Do you go through all the photos and look for fineprint that could be grounds to delete them? What are you trying to achieve? Yes I am an inclusionist but I am open to hear the opinions of deletionists as well. So please tell me, what drives you to do that? --Avala (talk) 17:40, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

In short, I found these images by way of going thru my own uploads. So I don't go looking for things to delete, but if I see anything problematic, I am driven only by COM:L and COM:PRP. Anyone is free to contact the Polish Senate and ask for further permission. Cheers, russavia (talk) 16:52, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Also, I will state, that I am one of the most inclusionist editors here on Commons; so long as files are all ok from a copyright standpoint, and there is some scope possible for files, then I very rarely delete files from our project. russavia (talk) 18:55, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

It's hard to imagine that "one of the most inclusionist editors" would nominate 20 files for deletion over something that could be interpreted extensively. Even if he did, it would be hard to imagine he would toss away the opportunity to save those images. On the other hand someone with an agenda to get those deleted, he would surely act in that away. All the best, --Avala (talk) 18:29, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Your comments are clearly stating that I have an agenda. If you don't clarify precisely what agenda you think I have, I will kindly as you to leave my talk page on this issue. And I warn, be very, very careful in your answer. russavia (talk) 01:04, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
I have nothing to add to my comment, you can just reread it. Your follow up question above is about motives. I don't know and don't want to guess your motives, only you know that. And please don't threaten me.--Avala (talk) 21:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
And kindly don't come here to my talk page talking about my motives. Thanks. russavia (talk) 16:19, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I quite clearly stated that I am not interested in discussing your motives so there you go. But I am interested in protecting the project from harmful behavior and the freedom speech allows me to express my dissatisfaction with moves of any editor including yourself. All the best, --Avala (talk) 00:45, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Anyway I've just noticed that the discussion is closed so let's leave it at that.--Avala (talk) 00:47, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

CC Zero vers. cc-by-2.0

Hallo Russavia, Magnus Manske Bot recently uploaded File:DSCF1260-Castielli-Italy-Roma-Fontana.di.Trevi_(3492369362).jpg under cc-by-2.0. The description of this file dedicates Creative Commons CC0 CC Zero. Isn't there a difference?
It is of importance, because the file in question is a duplicat of File:Fontana di Trevi Italy-Roma - Creative Commons by gnuckx (3207491457).jpg with cc-by-2.0, without CC0. --PigeonIP (talk) 09:02, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Heya, CC-0 is basically releasing it into the public domain, but this is only in the description/EXIF, whilst CC-BY-2.0 is in the licencing. As this is essentially a scaled-down duplicate, I'll delete the "3492369362" image and keep the "3207491457" image. Cheers, russavia (talk) 09:10, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Ok, so File:DSCF1261-Castielli-Italy-Roma-Fontana.di.Trevi (3491552645).jpg should probably stay with CC-BY-2.0 as well. Thank you, PigeonIP (talk) 09:14, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi

Hi Russavia, just thought this might be a good time to mention, I've appreciated your work here for some time, and learned a lot from watching your edits and from your various comments. Thanks for all you do. -Pete F (talk) 06:04, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Pete, it's really nice to receive such a compliment about ones activities on this project. I am glad that things I do and say on this project help you; hopefully even when I stuff up. We are all here to learn from each other, the entire Commons community does this in such a fantastic way, that this truly the best of all WMF projects. Your comments have really made my day, thanks for that. Cheers, russavia (talk) 06:25, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi

I respect your decision to have or not have a message on your talk page, but my posting was friendly and not hostile. Please understand. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 11:51, 7 March 2013 (UTC).

it looked bad to me. :( Penyulap 12:05, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
It was the link to a bad site, site typically used to harrass Wiki users. --Denniss (talk) 12:08, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
My posting was of innocence - but noted now - I'm fully with Russavia - our friend. I'm fully for her/him Hindustanilanguage (talk) 12:11, 7 March 2013 (UTC).
I understand that your message was not hostile in nature, but please do not link to such things again as it pertains to myself -- or if you want to be especially prudent, don't link to anything involving the troll Gregory Kohs anywhere on any of our projects. It is bad enough that Gregory Kohs via different avenues is publishing libellous information about myself -- the guy portrays himself as a journalist but he, and his fellow trolls, wouldn't know the meaning of "fact check" if it jumped up and bit them square on the arse, and hence he places himself in a quite an unusual legal predicament -- but I do not want want our project, or editors, to be placed into a similar precarious position by linking to it. So unless I divulge information openly on this project, anything related to my identity, or anything that these pathetic trolls say about myself off-wiki, is off limits here too. I will not comment on a single issue raised in them. Thanks for your understanding. So, how am I doing? Oh just great, thanks for asking. russavia (talk) 12:22, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Issues with some files

About the Files: File:NEW Polandball tutorial.png, File:I break every Polandball Rule.png, File:Special Administrative Regions hate Mainlanders.png and File:The Meeting of (not) Very Important (nominally) Sovereign Nations.png, there are some issues related with the licence. I've seen files of Reddit (like the mentioned ones) uploaded to Commons, so I need a little help, because I don't know how does it work to upload files of Reddit without problems. Thanks. --Continentalis (talk) 18:34, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

You need to get COM:OTRS permission for them. Don't worry too much about getting permission for them yet, as I am in correspondence with comic authors, and when we get permission, they can be uploaded again (if I don't get permission beforehand). russavia (talk) 01:10, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Public domain Soviet postcards?

Why does RFE/RL claim these Soviet postcards from the 1960s are in the public domain?

-- Petri Krohn (talk) 14:54, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Because they have no real understanding of Russian copyright law; which is just like their understanding of Russia in general ;) russavia (talk) 01:12, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Couldn't we just pretend they are right? :-) Petri Krohn (talk) 01:53, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
We could pretend they are right, but to do so would be to ignore our scope policy to satisfy editorial whims. So unfortunately not. russavia (talk) 07:07, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
