Demonstrations and protests against the presidency of Donald Trump has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Nest in VI
Hi, You make very beautiful and very useful image. The caption of the image is not very attractive. The name of the species must appear first with the binonial. It takes the dimenssion of the nest or a scale on the iamge itself. Here is an example of what you could do Orthorhyncus cristatus MHNT 3.jpg Regards --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 06:38, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Archaeodontosaurus: Thanks, but I cannot take credit for the pictures. :) They are from the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab. I changed the scope of the two nominations to what I think I understand is the right way. That is an impressive photo yourself. Are you suggesting I combine the two images into one? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk | 16:30, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Tricks of the trade
Hopefully the world will keep spinning a few more days despite everything that's happened lately... :/ Anyway, I was browsing your page to see if the QIBot had reported all your QI promotions lately. There have been some glitches and QIs have been promoted, but the seal did not appear on the files and the nominators did not get notified. Me and some other users have been fixing this manually, so just checking and things seems to be in order.
While looking at your page, I noticed that you got a notice about a new cat within minutes of creating it. Been there too... The trick when creating a new cat and not wanting any trouble is to upload a pic first and place it in some relevant wide category, then add the new category to that pic usually by using HotCat. That way the new cat appears as a red link at the bottom of the file's page, you click on it and create the new cat which now automatically has at least one pic in it. This will not lead to any notice/ping on any page where "faulty" cats appear.
(sidebar while I'm still writing to you) Congrats on the GA! Even if it took a while to get the review, it went very smoothly. One of the cleanest and least troublesome GA reviews I've been in. I was standing by to be wingman for endless rewrites, debating and last minutes surprises. Guess it paid off to have the article that well prepped. Cheers, cart-Talk 09:30, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: I presume the first comment is based on the subject of most of my most recent uploads? :)
- Thanks for checking the QIs. I haven't thought to double-check, but suppose it makes sense in the future.
- Yes, thanks re: GA. Seemed like he was pretty thorough, too, looking through all of the sources. GA reviews vary pretty dramatically in terms of thoroughness, standards, and focus. I've seen ones that you'd think were FACs and others that look like a rubber stamp. Some people estimate that GA is 90% of FA, and others say it's 60% of FA (or any number -- but then they quantify differently, too). I made the mistake of putting my students through the process the first time I taught with Wikipedia. Didn't quite have a grasp on just how variable the time until review and the standards applied are. Anyway, the ivory article doesn't feel close to an FA to me just yet, but I may send it to peer review to see what would be needed to get there. — Rhododendrites talk | 16:43, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
- Yep, thought you might want to do that hassle-free in the future. ;)
- I'm with you on the variety of GA reviews and how different reviewers can be. Some like to cooperate and some are downright nasty. Worst are those on a deadline for some points for a Cup or something; pushing and pressing.
- Might be a good idea to double check after closed QI reviews for some time ahead. I found about thirty missed ones. Oh, well just another day at the office... Best, cart-Talk 16:55, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
Apology
I didnt think of people creating a cat in advance of uploading, since i dont do that myself. if thats common, then you are correct, i could have just dropped you a note. im sorry. im all for this cat by the way.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:42, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Mercurywoodrose: Thanks for the follow-up. No worries at all. In my opinion, most things that aren't clear spam, copyvios, etc. are worth affording a little time to see if it's done. But that thinking is mainly drawn from my experience on Wikipedia (as opposed to Commons), where nominating a work-in-progress for deletion shortly after creation can be more damaging. It's not the same thing, though, and you and W.carter (above) may be right that best practice is to create a category as you use it. For me, I was exploring the existing categories before doing the upload because I simply didn't know what there was. While there, I started to see ways to move things around and create the space that made the most sense for what I was about the upload. So it seemed to make sense to just create it first, while I was there, rather than pause one train to resume later. I also sort of like it when the various wizards/gadgets pop up an existing category as I start to type it -- lets me know I'm using the right one. — Rhododendrites talk | 02:36, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign for User:The Photographer
Please excuse me spamming you. As a regular on Feature Picture Candidatess you will recognise User:The Photographer, who has 86 Featured Pictures. His contributions cover the architecture and culture of Brazil and Venezuela. He has basic photographic equipment: an old D300 camera and 35mm lens, and lives in a poor country where photographic equipment is expensive. The Photographer has recently taken several images using the technique where multiple frames are stitched together to create a high-resolution panorama. However, many times frustrated with the stitching errors that result from trying to take such photos without a proper panoramic head for his tripod. This special equipment permits the camera to be rotated around the entrance pupil of the lens, and eliminates such errors. Having a panoramic head would greatly increase the potential for The Photographer to create sharp high-resolution images for Commons. In addition, the purchase of a fisheye lens would enable 180 × 360° panoramas to be taken, which are a great way to explore a scene as though one is really there.
Please see the discussion about the Crowd-funding campaign on User talk:The Photographer#Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign and visit the Generosity Crowd-funding Campaign page to consider donating. Even a modest donation will make a difference if many people contribute. Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 21:11, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

- @W.carter: Thanks. :) Just uploaded more sea lions ... and there are still more to come. I think I mentioned that when I went to La Jolla last month I spent probably a couple hours hanging out with them and took far too many pictures. :) In other news, I got a macro lens a couple days ago. I'm excited, though it's a whole other style to get used to. 'Tis the season for expensive hobbies. — Rhododendrites talk | 13:59, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I remember since I think I hade some little hand in setting you on that path. ;D The great thing with digital photography is that you can't take too many pictures. I remember the bills I used to run up on film back in the analogue days... I'm taking sneak peeks at you uploads regularly. The macro sounds great, looking forward to see what it can do. I had to invest my stash of "toy-money" in new brakes for my car. Seemed more urgent. ;) cart-Talk 14:09, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

About fuzzy raspberries
I saw your comment about this at QIC. Organic material have a really funny and sometimes very annoying way of reflecting light. A surface may look perfectly clear and clean to the naked eye, but take a photo of it and you get really strange and funny coating on it. I've experienced this when I try to take pics of cliffs in the woods here. They look so great with nice light and shadows on them, but in every photo they come out as shapeless grey fuzzy lumps. >:( This is due to a very thin layer of tiny, almost invisible, lichens on them that reflects light in the most unwanted way. It's the same way with leaves. Their biological properties interact with cameras in the strangest ways when photographing their surface or light through them. For example, maple leaves in autumn look great in any photo from any angle while aspen leaves look golden but end up grayer and opaque in photos. Having a camera you get to know nature in a new way. cart-Talk 10:47, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: The "fuzz" I was referring to tin the image is the stuff on top. When I saw it in the carton, I assumed it was mold (they were all getting to be on the soft side), but looking closer it doesn't seem so. But to your point (I think), yes, I noticed the [minorly frustrating] cloudy fuzzy on the exterior of the whole berry, too. I intended to look up whether it was mold, but didn't get around to it (perhaps subconsciously due to the fact that I like eating raspberries and want to continue to like eating raspberries). — Rhododendrites talk | 15:04, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- Good plan. You should never look too closely at the things you like to eat. I made the mistake of looking at tap water in a microscope once... That freaked me out more than all the fish I've gutted and tasty animals I've butchered over the years. --cart-Talk 15:16, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

Into darkness
Inspired by your beach pics, I went down down to the shore for some shots. They turned out a bit different than yours... Guess who'd rather be in California right now. --cart-Talk 23:46, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: Most people, this time of year, I think. Where are all the boats? I noticed you're much less likely than some (e.g. me) to upload several similar (but sufficiently different) images of the same subject. Do you try to "get it right" the first time or do you try to select the one best of a given set? I just now finished uploading the last of the La Jolla images. I don't know how many I uploaded -- maybe 125ish? out of, I don't know 800? -- but I do tend to err on the side of uploading when it's a toss-up. Related: Just the other day the Huffington Post used one of the Trump protest pictures I would've never expected anybody to use here. Granted, it seems to be used for a reason other than why I uploaded it :) but it does help to affirm my preference. I wonder if you've a conscious rationale for your approach.
- BTW: Happy Saint Lucia's Day [tomorrow]! For the past few years I've gone to a party at a Swedish friend's house. I was disappointed to miss it this year, so perhaps I will just wear the hats. — Rhododendrites talk | 06:17, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- When I took the photo, the boats were behind me, on land, in winter storage. Or in gardens nearby or storage facilities. (pic to be uploaded tonight) The ice will settle any day now, some marinas even take the dock fingers out of the water during winter since the ice is very rough on them. This is so natural for me that I forgot to provide an explanation for the empty marina on the file's page. Now fixed, thanks for reminding me.
- Congrats of getting your photo published!! :) My reason for not uploading so many photos is a mixture of several reasons; I do try to "get it right" the first time and select the best of what I have, but these reasons are subordinate two other very boring reasons: time and money. My computer is on the old side and I can't afford a fast broadband connection. These combined makes uploading pics very slow work. I can't do batch uploads and have to do the photos one at the time. I'm sick and tired of sitting there watching the upload symbol spinning! It is also slower to work in a language not your own. I have to check spelling and be conscious of grammar all the time and sort of "reset" my thinking to English to get it right. With only so much time for my hobby, I tend to be more selective of the photos I upload. Also, when I took the photo above, it was below freezing and each photo had an exposure time of 6-8 seconds. Under such conditions you don't take more photos than "necessary". ;) This morning everything was covered in frost again, photos to be uploaded. cart-Talk 11:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Evidence as promised. :) cart-Talk 12:07, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Found em! I don't know if there's a feasible workaround, but if at some point it's a major barrier and would be easier to upload en masse to dropbox, drive, etc. (i.e. if the issue stopping you from block uploading is something with the connection with Wikimedia servers rather than something on your end -- aside from the speed), I can be your bulk uploading proxy. Could also send a thumb drive, but for that I imagine there are people a bit closer you could send to... — Rhododendrites talk | 01:29, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

More meddeling
Happy St Lucys day to you! This is what is usually served here on this day.
I've also been meddling a bit with this file, since I want to nominate it for FPC next and it was a bit tight at the top. People will either love it or hate it, it's a tossup, but it is certainly worth a try. I think it's fantastic.
Today I've been home after a flu shot this morning (you get a mini flu for a day or so afterwards) with more time on my hand than usual. So I've been uploading, reviewing, looking at things in general and here is one thing I thought I'd mention. Like you I usually click away a lot of shots since you never know how a photo will turn out before you see it on the computer. Sometimes if something turns out very promising or interesting, I go back to it and try to take a more planned and even better photo (like with this scouting with my pocket camera and this taken with my larger better camera. At the moment I'm "stalking" an apple tree. It looks really unusual with all the apples left on it when everything else is bare, but I think it would look even better once the snow settles in earnest. I'm just hoping the apples won't fall off before that. Now, looking at this pic, I think this could be worth a more planned version. The view with the green tangly stuff, stem and underside of the flower itself looks really "Avatar" and cool. If you could get hold of a fresh specimen and take a similar photo against some neutral background (say a paper) in good natural light (perhaps from a window), I think that could be a really awesome photo. I have been known to select good-looking fruit and vegetables for photo-ops, people think you're crazy but that is just another day on the life of a photographer. ;) Just an idea though. cart-Talk 19:18, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm familiar with Lussebullar (well, not by name, but from the aforementioned St. Lucia party). Thanks. :)
- Looks like the image is trending towards the latter. Ah well. I don't remember how detailed I got with my description of that (via some talk page or via the one or two images from just before/after this one)... I was surprised to be able to get so close to the sea lions (more or less as close as I wanted, without disturbing them), so I was sitting down on the tiny piece of rock not covered in sea lion and bird yuck, with my camera resting on my knee, clicking away. I noticed this one jump up from where she was hanging out and start rushing towards me all of a sudden. The males apparently have frequent run-ins with swimmers/divers during mating season, but females aren't known to be aggressive, so once she was clearly breaking from the rest of the group, headed inland, I worried that maybe a pup was nearby and I was too close. This was about the time that I started to realize I should move, and some people nearby started to "whoa whoa" quietly, then less quietly. Turns out she just wanted some alone time and/or a more comfortable rock. Not actually an eventful story, but makes this one a bit more memorable :)
- That's interesting that you scout pictures/stalk subjects (hopefully the tree doesn't file a restraining order). Seems professional. That's not something I'd think to do -- I see places I'd like to bring a camera, but I feel like I have to be looking at the camera to actually think in terms of the specific shot. Also, working from home and traveling almost entirely by foot, the world available to [easily] scout (such that I wouldn't have my camera and would know I'd be coming back there) isn't all that big (well, geographically anyway), and most of the time I'm out in the world is time that I could be carrying a camera (i.e. not working, not driving, etc.), so it's sort of just "picture-taking mode" or not. Meh? The queen anne's lace is long gone now. Someone brought over some flowers on Thanksgiving and I thought they looked unusually pretty as they were starting to die (I've thought about creating Category:Wabi-sabi in the past, but it just seemed like too much subjectivity would be involved). — Rhododendrites talk | 01:59, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

- Huzzah! Star, haiku, and notification appreciated. That seems strange that the uploader doesn't get a notification. Hm. I've been considering nominating something else -- more for the experience than because I think any are particularly amazing -- and narrowed it down to a handful. I wonder if there are any you think have a better/worse shot than others. There's this, which doesn't break any new ground, but feels nice :) ; there's this memorial, which I think has some impact for the context; a few pretty good shots of Coney Island; one of the Leucadendrons (my own favorite of the dying flowers, 1 & 2, though I anticipate the other flowers being out of focus may be a dealbreaker straight off), and then there's something about the cormorants silhouettes in La Jolla (the one you just saw at QIC or this one). They'd all need a little work (you mentioned CA for the cormorants, for example), but maybe there's a starting point in there somewhere... :) — Rhododendrites talk | 02:33, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- You should definitely think of doing some FPC noms yourself. :) You don't really get the feel of how it works until you've experienced it firsthand. Looking at your selection, I can see some comments hovering at the corner of my mind: Statue of Liberty - "common sunset" "too dark"; memorial - "cut object in down left corner" "too narrow crop at the bottom"; the plants - "busy background" "harsh light from flash"; coromants - "subject too small" (hey, there's an animal, please put front and center <sarcasm>). I think the Coney Island pics could do best, but then again as I said, it's very unpredictable, you may get lucky. Anyway, you have absolutely nothing to loose by trying as long as you see all this as a nice hobby and not your life's achievement. And you will gain new advice and experience from it. :) cart-Talk 10:32, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: I detect some animal-related frustration... Maybe it would be strategic to rename the image something like "Silhouettes of trees and bird-shaped branches at La Jolla Bay". Was planning to go with the Parachute Jump, but zooming in there are a bunch of color problems near the top I'd need to figure out how to fix (not CA -- looks more like a botched attempt to fix CA...), so I decided to take a different tack. w:Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Hook Windmill. — Rhododendrites talk | 02:29, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
- That seems like a very good place to start. :) And you detected the animal frustration right and there is more to unload. I often find the predominant "There can be only one!"-thing/subject/line/whatever-in-a-photo style at FPC very boring. The most favored photos are static, they should not include any interactions between two or more things, scenes, movement, emotions or (Heaven forbid!) humor. Everything should also be presented so that nothing is left to imagination. I only wonder where this simplistic way of capturing the world comes from. Oh well while I'm active here, I try to follow the rules laid out by this community. But yet I try from time to time to nominate photos that introduce new ideas ...and wait for them to get shouted down. ;) cart-Talk 10:03, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
- I would also add to your comment above, a great <LOL!!> to the tree taking out a restraining order on me! I too move within a rather small territory. Most of my FPs come from a very small stretch of coastline between Holländaröd and Rixö (no more than 1 km or so). The thing is, when you are limited you tend to notice other, more subtile things. cart-Talk 13:14, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Fun with Fruit
I see that you too have browsed the fruit department in the store. Very good result! Have you thought of leaving one piece, say a pear, out in the same spot and make a series of shots of it every 1-3 day as it decays? (other series: example 1 example 2) Such a series/multi-shot pic could very well be an FPC. cart-Talk 09:10, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: I stopped by a grocery store on my way home a couple weeks ago, with the primary intention of buying some fruit to use while playing with my new macro lens. :) I ran into someone I knew just after I left -- thankfully a fellow Wikipedian... one of the few types of people who might actually understand that kind of excitement. I have thought about leaving them out, but more just to (a) see the various stages of decay/mold or (b) thinking about a time lapse sort of thing. Not with the idea of a series/set in mind, which is an interesting idea. I don't want to breed too much resentment in our relatively small, shared kitchen area, of course, so we'll see. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 16:51, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Some holiday joy
Since 1959, it is a Swedish tradition to (at 3 pm) watch Donald Duck and other Disney cartoons on TV. The most appreciated part is about Donald as bird photographer in Clown of the Jungle. I think most users at FPC can relate to the frustrated Donald (especially the parrot scene), which is why I'm sharing it with you. Happy Holiday! --cart-Talk 14:57, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
- @W.carter: How did that tradition come to be? I figured the stealing of Christmas traditions was more the other way around. (Well, I wouldn't say watching Disney is a Christmas tradition here... Rudolph and Charlie Brown are the big things to watch here. And It's a Wonderful Life since it entered the public domain...). Anyway. Happy Holiday! — Rhododendrites talk | 17:00, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's a weird tradition alright. But back when TV started, and for the longest time, Sweden had only one TV channel and it was state controlled without commercials or anything. We were in the middle of building a modern socialist society. Foreign "light entertainment" for kids was Soviet ballet shows, Eastern Block puppet movies and some artistic Yugoslavian animated stories. But once a year, for one hour on Christmas Eve, Disney animations came on TV and we all loved it!! Those of us who experienced that still feel a sense of something lighthearted when we see these old clips and somehow that joy has been passed on to younger generations as tradition. cart-Talk 17:28, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
