First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thank you for your contributions. I helped a bit for proper categorisation; please take care for COM:OVERCAT. In the future I will remove redundant or plain wrong categories. "Folklore"

I'm not sure I understand how things based on files first uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2008 and 2009 -- files containing symbols which did not exist in that precise visual realization until that time (though of course in some cases the basic overall designs date back much earlier) -- can really be too "folkloric". Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

HELP ADMIN!

Admin help please!

I really...and I mean really do not understand the incredibly complicated system used by wikimedia. Is it deliberately designed to discourage contribution from the amateur?

I have uploaded successfully images to what I would categorise them as ie: witchcraft tools (ie: tools/artefacts used in witchcraft). I think I managed to create a category 'Witchcraft tools', however I am receiving bizare & complete gobbledegock msg's about re-categorizing???

Alas, I am not computer literate & therefore unable to speak html. The instructions received make no sense to me! Does this mean I have wasted my time up loading several hundred images to wkimedia...it would seem so?

I think you're actually doing moderately well -- if you think you have images which could be usefully put into a new category, upload them with that category and create the new category. Some problems can occur when all images are indiscriminately put into the same category, regardless of whether the specific details of each particular image are appropriate to the category, or when images are put into a very vague catch-all category such as Category:Folklore (when in most cases images should be in a more specific sub-category). You are doing quite well. Please read COM:OVERCAT and try to be more specific with the categories. Commons does not has a tagging system but categories that form some sort of presorted collections. Uploading a picture such as File:Delete this.jpg with such a name, no description and no categories is just asking for problems. --Foroa (talk) 05:46, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia LGBT+

Hi @Pinkpasty:

A while back I read your note on the LGBT free media collective page, but never got back to you there; sorry, there's always piles of backlogged stuff to think about and other volunteers are normally better at helping newcomers :-). If you feel that Commons is overly complicated and want to upload more material, I would be happy to lend a hand. Images with a CC-BY license on Flickr can be easily uploaded to Commons, and if you are more comfortable releasing drawings and photographs there, I can do this for you so long as the copyright/license is verifiable and the content can be justified as educational - which can include most LGBT+ history and illustrative cultural related content. As a small hint, adding photographs or scans to your own specific Flickr album makes this easier.

I support the global Wikimedia LGBT+ user group, being very active in uploading large collections of images, and we have regular general drives to increase the LGBT+ related content of Wikimedia Commons. There are a number of ways to contact LGBT+ volunteers, see the list at meta:LGBT+ which includes twitter and facebook. Feel free to drop me a note on my user talk page, or email me by clicking here.

By the way, I'm familiar with some of the strangeness of growing up gay in Cornwall, having spent my teenage years there, and I'm back visiting relatives in Redruth a couple of times a year. So if you have future projects in mind, it may even be possible for me to have a friendly chat about how Wikimedia works with anyone involved if doing more to improve LGBT+ Wikipedia content or increase Wikimedia Commons content is an ambition.
