Eight days into Wiki Loves Monuments

[edit]
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
Thank you for submitting so many photos to the competition! You're one of nine people who have uploaded more than 25 images to the UK competition, and that really helps increase our coverage of historic sites. Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia - though it may take a while for the monuments map to catch up so don't be disheartened if some pins haven't turned blue yet.

WLM runs until the end of the month, so please add more and invite other people to take part. The UK is closing in on 1,000 uploads putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message here or contact me directly at [email protected].

An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK

[edit]
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?

Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)}[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear No Swan So Fine,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, we don't need {{Listed building Scotland}} on each and every image if the template is on the parent category; that just clutters Historic Scotland listings with known IDs, because the template places them into that category. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:11, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I can see that now! I was trying to clear the images w/out Historic Scotland IDs page. No Swan So Fine (talk) 10:19, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Are you Gerald England?

[edit]

I noticed you recently uploaded File:Former Nat West bank, High Street, Pickering, December 2018.png, marking it as your own work and listing "No Swan So Fine" as its author. Does that mean that you are the same person as Gerald England on Geograph Britain and Ireland? If so, I might try to merge Category:Images by Gerald England into Category:Photographs by No Swan So Fine. --bjh21 (talk) 09:09, 17 March 2019 (UTC):[reply]

Sadly not! This was an error on my part. I found the Geograph uploading process quite fiddly. Thanks for noticing. Are there any plans to mass upload more recent Geograph images? I'm so grateful for their listed building photographs. Mr Englands work is stunning. Apologies once again. No Swan So Fine (talk) 10:07, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've uploaded the full-resolution JPEG as File:Former NatWest Bank (geograph 6083155).jpg. I'll nominate the PNG for deletion in a bit since it's redundant. I don't know of any plan to mass upload more images, but I am beginning to think that something in that direction might be a good plan. I could quite easily handle the technical side of transferring them, but categorising four million images will be a bit of a challenge. --bjh21 (talk) 22:38, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.

Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:46 Blomfield Road, Little Venice, April 2021.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

For the first time, Wales will be taking part in the international photo competition Wiki Loves Earth this year. It really is a fantastic competition! All the images need to be upload in June, by the photographer.

Please take a look at our WLE (Wales) landing page for further information:

Having taken photos for Wiki Loves Monuments in the past, I though, maybe, you would like to join us - and keep fit at the same time - or use images you took a while back.

File mover rights

[edit]

Thanks for all your contributions to Commons! Feel free to ask for file mover right at COM:PERM. You seem to have a good handle on the criteria, and it's just as easy to move a file as ask for it to be moved. Buidhe (talk) 21:41, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks, @Buidhe: ...It'll certainly reduce other peoples workload if I get approved! No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:10, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi No Swan So Fine, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Hi, what's the plan with this? I notice you're taking some images out of it, but they're still the garden suburb, are they not, and I can't see how this is otherwise implied? Andy Dingley (talk) 22:19, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for any confusion - I've been grouping three or more images of the same building into individual categories, and buildings into respective road categories, and roads into the main Hampstead Garden Suburb category, just to reduce the number of images in the HGS category. I might skip the road step and re-add buildings into the main cat. No Swan So Fine (talk) 13:50, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Film location pictures

[edit]

Hi there. A little while ago you wrote you loved my film locations galleries. Do you happen to live in or near London? In that case would you be willing to go snap and upload some pictures for me of places that have been used for several films and tv episodes, but are not represented on Commons in a way I can use for my galleries? You would make me very happy. Judithcomm (talk) 21:14, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes of course! Tell me your most wanted ones or a few in an area and ill give it a go. No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:33, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here is my list. I'll be happy with whatever you choose. Many are interiors though and I hope you can do anything with those without paying for a ticket ;-) I Do not know London, so I have no idea if any of these places are close together. The length of the list is only meant to give you options, just have fun with it.
Alexandra Court would be my first choice, Earlsfield Police Station my second (because it's such a lovely building) and Marylebone station my third, but are they anywhere near you?
  • New Wimbledon Theatre, 93 The Broadway, London SW19, interiors, especially the balcony and boxes. Used in at least 2 Poirot episodes, as I discovered just a few hours ago.
  • Brixton Academy, 211 Stockwell Rd, London SW9, the entrance hall, stairs and upstairs lobby. Used in 2 Poirot episodes and at least one film.
  • The Adelphi, John Adam Street, London. The lobby was used in at least one Poirot episode.
  • Alexandra Court, 171-175 Queen's Gate, London. The exterior doubles as the home of Ariadne Oliver in several Poirot episodes.
  • Earlsfield Police Station, 522 Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, Wandsworth. Used in 2 episodes. A very intriguing brick building.
  • 30 Ennismore Gardens, London. Exterior used in The Affair at the Victory Ball (1991)
  • Hackney Empire, 291 Mare Street, London, Hackney, E8 1EJ. The lobby appears in several Poirot episodes.
  • 50 Hertford Street, London. The Georgian shop fronts, alas now turned from black to red. Are there no rules against this?
  • 2 Hutchings Walk, London NW11. Exterior seen in The Million Dollar Bond Robbery (1991)
  • Ladbroke Hall, Barlby Road, London. Interior of the large studio and other places. Used in The Affair at the Victory Ball (1991)
  • Marylebone station. Entrance with old wooden ticket counters. Used in several Miss Marple and Poirot episodes. Here is a link to an image not allowed for Commons.
  • Richmond Theatre, entrance and stairs, upstairs cafe.
  • Victoria House, Bloomsbury, especially the entrance hall.
  • Wandsworth Town Hall, the stairs and upstairs and the courtyard, Used in at least 2 episodes.
  • Town Hall Hotel, Patriot Square, Bethnal Green, entrance hall and stairs.

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hi,

I deleted the duplicate but I'm curious. Is File:Coutts, 440 Strand, November 2022.jpg from 2022 (per the title) or from 2016 (per the description).

Location of cemetery arch

Any idea what the approximate location of File:Portsmouth, August 2023 dd 33.jpg might be? I can normally identify structures in Portsmouth quickly, but this has me stumped. Can you give me a clue as to the location? Thanks TimSC (talk) 23:27, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Albury Street

[edit]

Hi I didn't want you to think I'm edit warring so I thought I would post here, you made This mistake. If you check This map you can see the borough border goes along Creek Road then down Deptford Church Street. I'm surprised you made this mistake as on the whole you get it right, anyhow no big thing. In cases you're unsure of its often worth checking the location on OpenStreetMap. Please continue to have fun editing. Oxyman (talk) 06:32, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for noticing that! I used OSM yesterday to create Blackheath Hill, Google is hopless with these boundaries. It's a mad obsession, we're doing the virtual knowledge! No Swan So Fine (talk) 13:50, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yea I Know, although I doubt the knowledge goes as far as looking at borough boundaries this far away from the central zone Oxyman (talk) 15:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Should we put streets into respective London city wards? No Swan So Fine (talk) 20:27, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ultimately it's up to you, Personally I have concentrated in categorising by borough because OSM maps are easily accessible, linked to any file that has geodata and show where the borough boundaries are. This means you can tell for definite which side of the border what you are working on is and be confident your edits are correct. The city ward boundaries are likely to be complex when you start looking into it in detail. I haven't seen a detailed map showing where the city ward boundaries are (Although I haven't looked specifically for one) If you can find one it is unlikely to be as easy to view as OSM maps are. All that said I have no objection to this being done and if you want to do it go ahead. It just may turn out to be complex Oxyman (talk) 23:30, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Oxyman: , have you ever had a bigger haul than 16 into one listed building category like Category:Globe Wharf? So satisfying! Also, Daniel's photographs are wonderful. Incredible numbers. No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:54, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes it seems every inch of an area has been photo'd doesn't it? That guys images haven't been categorised yet, I'll have to look into that sometime Oxyman (talk) 23:38, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Two more which will stun you...DiscoA340 and Ricardalovesmonuments both had herculean upload hauls, just incredible. No Swan So Fine (talk) 00:07, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Pubs in Windsor. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Hello, I noticed you have hosted to Wikipedia an image of the 56-58 South Street remodeled by Edwin Lutyens. I am working with the Lutyens Trust for their comprehensive Gazetteer website of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens projects, and I would like to ask on the behalf of the Lutyens Trust to ask for permission to use the photograph of this Lutyens project for the Gazetteer website. If permissible, the photograph and you as photographer would be credited and this chain would serve as proof of agreement of image usage and permissions. And if so, what credit line would you like associated with your image? Thank you. VCannella3 (talk) 20:54, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would be honoured to have you or the trust use any of my images. I've always been enthralled by his massive simplicities. I've created a folder of my other Lutyens images here Category:Photographs by No Swan So Fine/Lutyens, I never knew I took so many until you reminded me! And I also photographed the M&S store on Oxford Street by his son. No Swan So Fine (talk) 22:53, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, I will certainly take a look at your other photographs as well. Some projects we already have images for, but I will let you know if any of your other photographs could be used for the Gazetteer. Thank you again, we are very grateful for this contribution to the Gazetteer website. VCannella3 (talk) 13:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

English · français

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Royal East Kent Yeomanry War Memorial and Associated Horse Trough. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
