Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Image Tagging Image:ICE-International 1826 Bahnsteiganzeige.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:ICE-International 1826 Bahnsteiganzeige.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. - As specified in my texts to the image, the image is my own work. --L.Willms (talk) 22:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
This is a great photo but having reviewed the OTRS ticket, I am not happy that the permission received is clear enough. We need an explicit statement that the photographer releases the image under an appropriate free licence but in this case he simply says that it can be used on Wikipedia. This is not good enough, images have to be freely licecned which allows them to be reused by others not just Wikipedia. I'd ask that you attempt to clarify this with the photographer ensuring they are clear about what is required. If they do not agree to release the image under an appropriate free licence then the image will have to be deleted. Please let me know if you have any queries about this. I'll propose the image is deleted if no action is taken to resolve this issue. Regards. Adambro 14:36, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- I had a correspondence with the photographers explaining explicitly what extent of licence is needed for the upload to Wikipedia. But if that is not good -- OK, let's remove the good photos from Wikipedia before all get commercialised. --L.Willms 07:41, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Do you have the original file you used to generate this image?
If so, can I get a copy? Suggestions have been made that its colours should be improved. Many thanks. Evertype (talk) 13:12, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- It was not me who generated this image. --L.Willms (talk) 20:08, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 17:59, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.
The images we would like you to check are:

File source is not properly indicated: File:CitadisStrasbourg2.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:CitadisStrasbourg2.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
:File:CitadisStrasbourg2.jpg ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Copyright status: File:TCUL (Angola) logo.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:TCUL (Angola) logo.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- "The general rule is always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those."
- "Generally files should only be in the most specific category that exists for certain topic. For example files in Category:Looking up the center of the Eiffel Tower should not also be in Category:Paris (see over-categorization below)."
- "Don't place an item into a category and its parent."

Hallo L.Willms, gib bitte die Quell-Adresse (URL) an. Bilder vom Geoportal benötigen nämlich durch eine Attribution, was bei diesem Bild bislang fehlt. --Túrelio (talk) 10:19, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Sir, please use the English language on this site. Let me quote from the Berlin city Geoportal, this time the original German text: "Der Quellenvermerk, der gemäß §2 der o.g. Nutzungsbestimmungen zu verwenden ist, lautet "Geoportal Berlin / [Titel des Datensatzes]". No mention of a URL. The PDF file of the usage conditions ("Nutzungsbestimmungen") is and always was directly linked from the image page. The FIS-Broker's URL is http://fbinter.stadt-berlin.de/fb/index.jsp, but that is not the actual source of the image. That source has to be indicated as required in article 2 of the usage conditions. Cheers, --L.Willms (talk) 15:07, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi, thank you for your question. However, I can't help you much. In the description in Polish it is written that the author of the map is signed as "Klemt". My contribution was only to upload the images and their descriptions from the materials supplied by the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. In the map's descrition it is written that the original map is kept at the State Archive in Wrocław. If you have any further questions, please inquiry there.
