Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:57, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Ben.MQ (talk) 05:28, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Category:Surbiton
[edit]Hello. I notice that some time ago you created a new category for Surbiton, which I welcome. I must have failed to check my watchlist for more than a month! You moved one of my Surbiton pictures into it and I have now moved the others. However, I see that there are several pictures of St Raphael's Church in it. This is not in Surbiton postal district and was never in the old Borough of Surbiton, although it is very much tied up with the history of Surbiton Park, an area which remained in Kingston after the split of 1855. It seems to me that Churches in Kingston upon Thames is the appropriate category. How do you feel about this? LynwoodF (talk) 10:45, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi LynwoodF, I'm sure your right. I'm no expert on that side of the river, but thanks for asking. Jonathan Cardy (talk) 22:23, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
Hello again. Thank you for your friendly reply. I am not surprised you are not too sure where the boundaries are. There is no clear break and much of "Surbiton riverside", as people sometimes call it, is actually in Kingston. LynwoodF (talk) 22:53, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Georgian National Museum
[edit]Hi. It is a bit sad, that your images of objects of the museum nearly not usable. At first: a thank to the museum is fine - but not a description. But second: a description is the most important part between the image itself. We need to know, what is to see on the image. Of which culture is this "vessel"? Found where? Produced where? Material? The date don't work. In B.C. times first comes the 8, than the 6. It is not a "vessel", a vessel is an open shape. This is a jug. What is a Tamada? Which culture? Date? How someone should use the image without knowing, what is to see? It is sad, you made a lot of work , but in this way for nothing. So please give some more informations for your images! Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:52, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Marcus, glad you like the images, some of the descriptions will go at the category level - the category for Tamada already existed and I think should answer your questions, others I have created. Part of my lack of descriptions has been due to a some mistakes in my photography that left me with some very out of focus shots of the museum descriptions, and I didn't want to add descriptions from memory but I have more info now including one of the books from the museum, so more info will be coming. As for whether the museum is correct to describe that object as a vessel rather than a jug, well Wiktionary defines vessel as "A container of liquid such as a glass, goblet, cup, bottle....." That object could be used as a small jug and poured from into cups, but it could also be used as a large cup and drunk from directly. So in this case I agree with the museum in describing it as a vessel as that word works for either, there are other descriptions where I doubt that the museum is correct, but other than obvious typos I won't put my opinions over their expertise. Your user categories
[edit]Hi, please note that while categories like Category:Photographs by Jonathan Cardy at the Bovington Tank Museum are fine, user categories should not be placed as a sub-cat of a content category. For the Tank Museum example, I assume that all the files are correctly categorised within the museum's tree - so all that needs to be done is remove the category from your user cat.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:20, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!
[edit]Hi
You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.
You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.
Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!
[edit]Hi
Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.
Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).
We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.
The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.
Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.
Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
