-- sarang사랑 13:34, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joadl, I hope that I may be able to use your 1960s SA rucksack jpg to illustrate a heritage article I have written on packs (rucksacks) I wish to provide to a local (New Zealand) website with interest in tramping/hiking heritage. (I may be contacted at quarta_master(at)yahoo.co.uk). I have published the article previously in a commercial magazine with other illustration but the idea of publishing on the website is non-commercial. Thanks, Ross.

Thank you for the information, the use of the photograph, whether commercial or not, is free. --Joadl (talk)

Category:Sun pillars

[edit]

Hey Joadl, I've just noticed your translation in this category. I know very little German, so I'm not sure if I can trust Google on this, however it seems säulenartige Sonnenstrahlen translates as column-like sun rays. If so, this is a bit misleading, as they are not sunrays at all, but only apparent rays resulting from individual reflections on myriads of ice crystals; moreover these crystals are located anywhere in the vertical plane linking the observer and the sun, and do not themselves add into a linear feature such as a ray or a pillar. As usual in atmospheric optics, it is all illusion! I'm not going to change it because: - it's not a big deal, - I'm not sure of Google, - I couldn't write anything better by myself! So I leave it up to you. If you want to change it, I'd suggest something meaning column-like reflection of light on ice crystals. You can find more info here: [3] and few next pages. I'll check this page for a while in case you have any questions. Cheers! 84.97.149.211 06:22, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sehr geehrter Joadl,

Meine Herren, Eurer Mitarbeitsangebot ehrt mich, vielen herzlichen Dank.

Made me sad to nominate this photo :-(. You take some great photos, and Wikimedia Commons is much better for your contributions! Unfortunately, some countries, such as Italy are very restrictive in terms of copyright and freedom of panorama, and Commons policy is to only accept media which are free in their country of origin (as well as the US) see here. This looks like some sort of Ulmus cultivar, probably of Ulmus glabra. Whatever it is, it is not Fraxinus . Or ignore me altogether (another popular approach). Wonderful shot, regardless.

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Josephinische Landesaufnahme Wien 1768 Auszug Nordwestbahnstraße.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
