Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Myoporum et al.

Hi Gderrin,

Thanks for your message about Myoporum oppositifolium, I am happy to see that you could use the photo! I have just added two more photos of another WA Myoporum species (M. tetrandrum) to my gallery and some photos of other Myrtaceae (Darwinia spp, Agonis flexuosa). Verticordia nitens and Eucalyptus macrocarpa are uploaded too. I have some more photos of different Verticordia, Beaufortia and Calothamnus species (all photos taken between Perth and Albany about a year ago) - but I don't know the exact species (only the genus) and I therefore didn't upload the photos (as yet). If you would like to have these photos, just let me know.

Image problems

Many of your uploads have false licences. You changed then from what is on the source pages to licences we accept. This is not allowed and is why I have tagged several for deletion because they are copyright violations. I have only gone back as far a July 10 and I suspect some others are also incorrectly licenced. We do not accept images with commercial (NC) or derivative (ND) restrictions or "all right reserved". Some of the images come from http://images.ala.org.au but there is no source information just the image, so we cannot even check the copyright status of such images. Please always link to the page the image is displayed on that has the details and not just the plain image page. I suggest you review you uploads and tag those that are obvious copyright violations as such so they can be deleted because it is a very tedious job reviewing so many images manually. Thanks for your cooperation and some nice images but unfortunately you have wasted some of your time uploading the bad ones. In future I suggest you please add the {{LicenseReview}} template to all images except to your own photos and any Flickr images you might upload. As mentioned above, no ND and no NC are allowed. Sorry it's frustrating to find and upload images and then have them deleted. If you like to make a list and post it on this page I can then help you get them dealt with. Just ping me.
I notice (below) that Daphne Lantier, as admin, has also seen the problem with the http://images.ala.org.au images that maybe you can sort out as I think they are actually freely licensed for us to keep but we need to see the licensing permission page. @Guanaco: I confess to being confused about why this file (File:Zieria murphyi.jpg) as well as File:Zieria odorifera habit.jpg and File:Zieria odorifera.jpg have been deleted when many others I have copied from the same site http://bie.ala.org.au such as File:Zieria obcordata.jpg have been given a satisfactory license review. All images on the "bie.ala" site have a "creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/au/" license. My apologies for my earlier embarrassing, unwitting sins and thanks for your tireless work. Within the "Image Properties" section there's a license field. Usually it's blank or says Creative Commons Attribution, but in those cases it said Attribution-NonCommercial. It's easy to miss. It's pretty clear to me that the Attribution-NonCommercial applied before the image was uploaded to http://bie.ala.org.au in 2011 (when it was copyrighted by the Australian National Botanic Gardens). All the images on http://bie.ala.org.au are licensed Creative Commons Attribution. Doesn't matter anyway. Hi Gderrin - I appreciate Eucalyptus globulus is native in Tasmania, but the specimens in File:Eucalyptus globulus globulus.jpg are clearly in a heavily human-altered situation, and thus very likely planted, rather than growing naturally (as also suggested by other planted trees in the photo like Araucaria heterophylla). That's why I'd put it in the non-native subcategory. Do you still think it would be best in the main species category? I'll be happy with whatever you think best on this. Hello @MPF: , Thanks for the message. You are right - there are many cultivated plants around the Port Arthur World Heriatge site, but Murray Fagg, who took the photo, is usually in the habit of saying when the images he takes are of cultivated specimens or in an arboretum, for example. I also think there is a difference between "non-native" and "not growing naturally". I think the Category:Eucalyptus globulus is the right one. I also noticed that you moved some images of other E. globulus subspecies to a subspecies page (eg. Eucalyptus globulus subsp. maidenii). Agree with that, and thanks for your work. I'll leave creating a category for the nominate subspecies for now at least, there's not really enough pics yet to justify it (hint: get out there with your camera :-)) (hope there's some left after all those fires!); the other subspecies cats had already been made by others (and I only moved those pics where the subspecies was named in the filename; I'm not expert enough on Eucalyptus ID to verify them myself). Reminder to myself though, I never finished going through all the pics to move out all the non-natives, must get round to it sometime . . . the big quick bulk move was all those Starr pics from Hawaii. @MPF: Yes, the fires are bad but the drought is worse. Those trees that aren't burned are producing very few flowers. Those two images are definitely not E. globulus. I'm not clever enough to say what they are without seeing bark and fruit, but E. globulus buds are "turbinate" (spinning top-shaped), "shortly umbonate" (rounded knob on the top) and "glaucous" (white-waxy). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
