Hello, Gatoclass!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Okay, everything above has at least one cat now, still some cleaning up to do though. Gatoclass (talk) 02:19, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. At File:Providence main stairway.jpg I see "to be completed" as the "source" etc. By you, I hope. :-) In case you forgot. Thanks. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 08:57, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry, must have forgotten to go back and fix it. Thanks for the nudge, I'll do it shortly :) Gatoclass (talk) 17:20, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Finally got around to it. Gatoclass (talk) 14:20, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr reviewing

[edit]

Hello Gatoclass, and thank you for your application to be a flickr reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. Congratulations! Please see Commons:Flickr images if you haven't done so already, and the backlogs at Category:Flickr images needing human review and Category:Flickr review needed. A helpful script for easy-tagging flickr images is at importScript('User:Patstuart/Flickrreview.js'); (which you can add to your monobook.js), and you can add User reviewer or User trusted to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your work on Commons! :) –blurpeace (talk) 06:42, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move image please?

[edit]

(copied from admins noticeboard)

Not sure where to place a request like this so I'm putting it here. Can someone move my file File:Alfred C.jpg to its correct name, Alfred C. Chapin.jpg? It's a problem with my software that sometimes truncates names to the nearest period. Thanks! Gatoclass (talk) 14:46, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. For future reference, you can request renames by putting New name.jpg on the image page. –Tryphon 16:05, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks for that :) Gatoclass (talk) 17:34, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More cats, please

[edit]

Hi, it's pleasant to see all these old pictures arriving, but most are categorized only by architect such as Category:Buildings by Frank Freeman or corporate name, or other single topical cat. Better if you can also give them a local category such as Category:Brooklyn, New York City or any broader or narrower neighborhood cats that may exist and apply. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:47, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I probably will add some more categories later, but I find that trying to figure out the most appropriate categories is often a difficult job as one really has to have a good grasp of the category tree. And given that I just wrote a bunch of articles to go with these images, I just haven't had time to get everything done. But thanks for the word of appreciation - I like finding old images to upload too :) Gatoclass (talk) 05:42, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We all have our little specialties; there are plenty of good free pix on the Web and I'm glad we have smart people digging around and finding them. Summertime my specialty is to bike around the metro area snapping Wikiphotos. Winter, stay indoors more, poking around the city and suburban categories where my summer photos are, Commons:Geocoding mine and others and moving them up, across, and mostly down the tree. Thus I'm pretty familiar with the local tangle of categories. My periodic patrols of chronically overstuffed cats such as Category:New York City often turn up pix that need moving, but if an item isn't in any of the local categories then it doesn't come to my attention until it shows up in an article I'm watching or something. So, yes, even if you accidentally land it a bit high on the tree or in a slightly wrong branch, you will at least enable my fellow cat wranglers to wrestle it into its proper place, while if it's not in any geographic cat at all then its odds are slimmer. File:Testimage.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

OTRS permissions queues

[edit]

Hello Gatoclass. You are receiving this message as a license reviewer. As you know, OTRS processes a large amount of tickets relating to image releases (called "permissions"). As a license reviewer, you may have the skills necessary to contribute to this team. If you are interested in learning more about OTRS or to volunteer please visit Meta-Wiki. Tell your friends! Artefacts at certain resolutions of scanned images

[edit]

Hi. I see you wrote "I learned the advantages of scanning and uploading images in .png" in Commons:Graphics village pump/April 2021#Artefacts at certain resolutions of scanned images. For uploading photos on wikis, a png version will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version instead or in addition.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:52, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
