MFN photos
Hey FunkMonk,
could you please get permission from the MFN's PR person (http://www.naturkundemuseum-berlin.de/mitarbeiter/mitarbeiter.asp?path=aboutus&name=Gesine.Steiner) for use of this pic: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Plateosaurus_quenstedti.jpg I know it is a pain in the ass, but it would very much help me getting a general permission guidline decreed in Berlin. :)HMallison (talk) 13:30, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. I'm not sure what the permission should be for? The fossil is not copyrightable, and there's not really any interior on the photo. FunkMonk (talk) 23:04, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
Unhelpful lightsaber edits
What is your problem exactly? After having been specifically told that this was not a matter for speedy, you then went right out and added speedy tags to a whole new batch of images. Either add those images onto the existing deletion nomination at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Dueling lightsabers.svg, or leave them alone. AnonMoos (talk) 19:46, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
- You're getting the chronology wrong. The other images were nominated before my first nomination was reverted. Second, they are still copyvios if you bother to do a little research. If you bothered to look at the images before drive by reverting, you might notice that there are individual problems with each image. For example, the other obvious copyvio in this image; http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STS120Lightsaber.jpg R2D2, a Star Wars robot character. Likewise, this image has no valid source, yet you still reverted my nomination: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saberhilt2.jpg And this image shows two obviously copyrighted toys: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Star_Wars_Elephant_Andh.JPG So the only one who is unhelpful here is you. An example of an acceptable lightsaber image is this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LightSabers_OrgYel.jpg Nothing is based directly on the movies. Newbie
Hi! Sorry for newbie, I haven't checked it up... But say the truth I am a little bored with the faultfinders. And they are newbies usually... Btw. I see no much difference between the old and the new file. But if you see it I respect you point of view. Regards Electron <Talk?> 14:10, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it's in the details really, but a copyrighted design is a copyrighted design. I'm an admin here, so I'm not supposed to overlook such things just to be nice. FunkMonk (talk) 16:37, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- OK. Job is job ;) Regards Electron <Talk?> 08:02, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Star Wars nominations
Hi FunkMonk, I reverted your Star Wars speedy deletion requests as these are not obvious copyright violations. If you disagree feel free to open a regular deletion request (you probably want to group them together). Multichill (talk) 20:04, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well, the only thing they have in common is that they are Star Wars related, the license issues are separate (toys, movie props, maquettes, so on), would it really be helpful to have them one place? I would have to give reasons for the deletion of each image individually anyway. As for the one on the right, the toy is copyrighted, so I'm just following Commons guidelines and precedents. To understand it better, would it for example not be a problem if these images were used on Wikipedia to show the characters they depict? That would be problematical. And using them for any purpose, also commercially? Would be illegal. FunkMonk (talk) 20:15, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Seems like you made the same mistake as Anonmoos of just reverting all my nominations without looking at them individually. Take this image[1] All the description says is "Image taken from Wookieepedia. Created by JMAS.
This hilt is one of many styles created and sold at www.parksabers.com". That image does not belong on Commons, and you would had realised so if you had looked at the description. FunkMonk (talk) 20:27, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
File:Bruce_Ivins_award_ceremony.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Bruhathkayosaurus Image Deletion....Again
Hi Funky. Sorry to ask you this again but could you please try and get all evidence of my bruhathkayosaurus image of the commons and wikipeda. It really embarases me. I have been trying to remove it from the internet but it's everywere. You previously suggested that I upload a new titanosaur over the top and then it could be renamed but I create my scale diagrams these days in SVG. (I don't see the point in having two versions of the same image. Especially since SVG images automatically create PNG versions.) Please, if you get some spare time, delete all evidence of it. Cheers. Steveoc 86 (talk) 23:24, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Done! FunkMonk (talk) 00:39, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you soo much!! Do you have the power to delete images off wikipedia (there are three other versions there) or just on the commons? Steveoc 86 (talk) 01:14, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Welcome, and no, I'm only an admin here, but Firsfron and Casliber should be able to do it on Wikipedia. FunkMonk (talk) 06:52, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Hoplodactylus delcourti.png
Hello,
I will try to contact the author of the image (not easy: he is a well known biologist, always moving around the world to study reptiles…). What kind of thing you need? I mean, I get the original mail of this person, but it is very easy to forge a mail, so I suppose it is not enough. Regards, Hexasoft (talk) 20:44, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Gallery check
Hey Funk, could you take a look at the images contributed by User:Joerim? I think all fall outside of the scope of the project but wouldn't mind a second opinion from someone more familiar with deletions in that realm. Thanks! --Kevmin (talk) 03:45, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'd agree, but it seems that such images are accepted as long as they are used on the uploader's userpage[2], which they are in this case. So all we can do is tag them with the inaccurate paleoart cats as well as keeping them out of articles. FunkMonk (talk) 21:15, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Short answer: Yes! They are Public domain. There's no real ambiguity to the law surrounding them: They're fine.
Long answer: See that link =)
We may want to make you a Template:PD-Australian-film template, but that's just prettying up =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:11, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! These videos are really exiting, I can't believe someone didn't upload them already. But that's maybe because the template is missing, heheh. FunkMonk (talk) 05:15, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Copyright vio
Hi FunkMonk. I think that File:Mehmet Günsur.jpg seems like a screenshot, and therefore can't have a free licence. Can you please check it? Thank you in advance. --yabancım 14:31, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Looks quite suspicious to me too. Maybe you could ask the uploader on his or her talk page? If you get no response, we can tag it as having no good source, and it will get deleted unless the uploader elaborates. FunkMonk (talk) 17:18, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi again. I asked the user about the source of the file over a month ago, but couldn't get any answer. I want to inform you about this. Thanks. --yabancım 18:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- Then I think you can just nominate it for deletion, that will automatically attract second opinions. FunkMonk (talk) 23:31, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- I followed your advice. You can write your opinion here, if you like. Thank you for your help. --yabancım 18:55, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Martin H. (talk) 00:34, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- You removed the original source and quoted some random webblog as source [3]. Thats inapropriate! The blogger downloaded the image from wikipedia and used it in his blog (see the 300px- prefix, thats a typical wikidownload) and now you cite the blog as a source and claim the image beeing PD-Egypt... You must provide clear and 100% correct evidence that something was published in Egypt for the first time to claim it PD-Egypt, did you forget this? The relevant country is not the location of the photo, also an photo is not from Egypt just becaue it shows an Egyptian. License claims based on that consideration are very dubious (and in 90% of the cases they are terrible wrong). --Martin H. (talk) 00:40, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- I honestly don't remember much about that picture, remember, it was all the way back in 2007, and I wasn't very experienced back then. I think I simply transferred it from Wikipedia and attempted to find the original source afterwards. And back then, PD templates for Mid East countries were ambiguous, and stated that if an image was "created" in the respective country at so and so date, it would be PD. Do whatever you want with it.FunkMonk (talk) 00:54, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:58, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
