I removed the copyvio tag from this because Commons appears to allow such images to exist (See Category:Wikimedia). I am not an administrator. If you believe I am incorrect feel free to retag the image, but I ask you submit it to a regular deletion rather than a speedy deletion. -Nard 02:52, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Pre-1953 works by Akira Kurosawa are *not* safe for us

We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:51, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Gerald Ford
[edit]Hi! Thanks a lot for bringing my attention to this, you are absolutely right, I wasn't careful enough. I was looking for this picture at the Ford Presidential Library website but it wasn't there. I've also learnt Ford had two official presidential pics and that's none of them. That's why I've already asked one of the admins to delete it. Thanks again! Powerek38 (talk) 12:38, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi, you applied a speedy delete for this image. Let me try to get in touch with the uploader. If you look at the flickr page, it's clear that the flickr user and the wiki user who uploaded the image are one in the same, so he/she just has to change the copyright on the flickr page.
I'm also not sure if you could let the copyvio go because it's clear that this is the user who took the image, and therefore the user has the right to release the copyright
Thanks. --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 15:18, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

About the Honduran Flag...
[edit]Hello Feydey, You reverted my changes on this flag. I must tell you that you must first ask before doing, because you are one of the five persons that still dont do this. This is the Honduran Law in Spanish:
- La Bandera Nacional de Honduras constará de tres franjas iguales y horizontales, la superior y la inferior de Color Azul Turquesa, la del centro blanca y llevará en medio cinco estrellas de cinco ángulos salientes del mismo color azul, formando con cuatro de ellas un cuadrilongo paralelo a las franjas, siendo colocada la restante al centro del mismo cuadrilátero.
Traduced to english:
- The Nacional Honduran Flag would consist of three equal horizontal frames, the top and bottom one of Blue Turquoise Color and the center a white which which would have in the midlle five stars of five angles standing out with the same color blue, forming with four of them a cuadri-rectangle parallel to the frames, being one more colocated at the center of the same cuadrilateral.
I will ask to protect this flag, because it looks like people arent paying attention to a national law. If you really want to "the reference", then go look on the spanish Wikipedia, and I hope you speak spanish. Please next time beileve Honduran users. Greetings. --Ricardo P. Quick explanation. Can you help?
[edit]Hi Feydey, I uploaded the photo of Lisa Fischer, but at the time it had a non-commercial tag on it's Creative Commons license, which I did not see then. I'm sorry to bother you, but I looked for TWO YEARS for an image of Lisa Fischer, who has toured with the Rolling Stones for almost 20 years. Can you help? Illustration for new article
[edit]Feydey:
I have recently completed a new article (Carlos Inzillo), and have uploaded a corresponding image of the subject. The photo is Argentine and from 2008, and since I was unable to find any from before 1989, I fear the image might be targeted for deletion.
Please note, though, that under Argentine Intellectual Property Law (11.723/art.31), "a photo of an individual is free from copyright when it is taken in public, pertains to a public event, or to one of public interest" (see [2] - article 31 - though you might need a Spanish translation). The image is of Inzillo in his capacity as coordinator of the 2008 Buenos Aires Jazz Festival (a city government-sponsored event), and from their website. It fits the legal provision and, as such, I wouldn't want it deleted by mistake. Could you please see if you can add the corresponding license template (Template:PD-AR-Public, perhaps) to Wikipedia's list?
Please contact me if you have any doubts or questions, and thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Sherlock4000 (talk) 10:34, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Thanks for adding that; I'm a slob with mapmaking so didn't want to fix it up; wondering if I could ask you to add other placenames along the lake - Seton Portage, and Slosh (which is right by the shoreline of the lake, and is part of the Portage), the BC Hydro Bridge River townsite (the nest of roads just west of "Shalalth Bay" and, just west of it, Skeil (the new First Nations housing development, the name being the name of the headland), Ohin (the nest of roads east of Shalalth) and maybe Retaskit (though uninhabited) and Seton Beach/Skimka. An arrow pointing east from the edge of the map to Lillooet also seems called for, perhaps also an indicator for the Mission Mountain Road/Mission Pass....Skookum1 (talk) 15:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Paul Klee
[edit]Hi; as far as I'm aware, Not-PD-US-URAA is only applicable to works published 1923 or later? Everything first published before 1923 is PD in the US too, I think. Therefore I think that the restoration of US copyright for works by Paul Klee is only applicable to Klee works from 1923 or later, and not e.g. for File:Fenster u. Palmen, 1914.jpg from 1914 - also, matters are further complicated by Klee having lived and worked in Switzerland for long periods, and in Switzerland his work is in the public domain since 1991 (Switzerland had 50 years p.m.a. then, and the extension to 70 years in 1993 didn't restore already expired copyright), so if a work by Klee counts as a Swiss work, its copyright wasn't restored at the URAA date January 1, 1996. Gestumblindi (talk) 19:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- See also User_talk:Lupo#Paul_Klee (in German) - Lupo agrees that paintings of Klee first published before 1923 are in the public domain in the USA, too. Well, in case of File:Fenster u. Palmen, 1914.jpg we know that it's from 1914, but was it also published (i.e. shown in an exposition) before 1923? If Klee didn't show it to the public before 1923, it doesn't count as published. But probably we can assume this. Gestumblindi (talk) 22:25, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've been changing Paul Klee works dated before 1923 from Not-PD-US-URAA to PD-1923. While we can't know for sure that the works were first published shortly after being created, we generally have to assume this unless we have some reason to believe otherwise - otherwise it would be impossible to consider any work to be in the public domain in the US. Elinan surma
[edit]Moi! Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
Delivered by Orbot1 (talk) at 09:19, 19 January 2013 (UTC) - you are receiving this message because you voted last year
Why template me for not knowing the source of a work identified as being created in the 16th century? If you can show that such works are likely to be copyright anywhere in the world, that might be reasonable but as far as I know the King James Bible is the only work which is. Secondly, a bit of patience might be in order as well - the upload wizard isn't great for tagging data - so it often needs sorted out afterwards the 12 minutes it took me to do that is not unreasonable - the 5 minutes it took you tag me and the image certainly is. --Woden.Ragnarok (talk) 10:59, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Feydey,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:A Little Book of Brittany (IA alittlebookbrit00mcbrgoog).djvu. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Dear Wikimedian,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you previously voted in the Picture of the Year contest. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2023.
Round 2 will end at UTC.
If you have already voted for Round 2, please ignore this message.
