Hello Christian Ferrer,
first - thanks for reviewing my QI-nominations. Alas, I don't know that much about photography and am not sure what I should see in the marked square you provided or what CAs means. If I guessed correctly (looking at the List of CA-abreviations), chromatic aberrations is what I'm looking for? I'll try to learn what that is and what I can do against it, but I probably won't be able to correct it in the picture... should I withdraw it? Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 21:33, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Pont de Vias : no problem !
Salut Christian. Bien amicalement. --JLPC (talk) 21:28, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello Christian Ferrer,
I noticed that you are reworking the featured flowers... sorting them by taxon instead of just alphabetically is probably a very good idea (as long as there are more than one or two pictures per gallery - which seems to be the case). Perhaps I'll find some time to help you resort the remaining pictures...
But there are two things I'd like to change:
- I would suggest setting the image heights to 200px to avoid sectioned words as is now the case for e.g. a lot of the Orchidaceae pictures where the description needs four to five lines (though I have to admit that personally I dislike the packed mode as I think that it favours landscape format too much...)
- I'm not too sure about using headlines as links (See also is normally the better solution), but I would never provide links to the English wikipedia outside of interwiki-links or templates (VN, wikiproject-boxes), as links in galleries should lead to further information on commons itself. Contrary to the packed mode (which really is just a matter of taste) I believe that Commons guidelines advise against wikilinks in galleries.
All the best, Anna reg (talk) 01:03, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- Yes; Commons prefers link to pages/categories in our own project if possible. The problem is our "gallery" pages are poorly maintained. What about linking to categories? Jee 02:14, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Anna reg, J, I changed the image heights to 200px, it's a good idea thanks, and I deleted the links to the English wikipedia, and I tried another solution, please take a look. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 05:03, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Jkadavoor: : I know - the maintenance of galleries is a recurring problem... my preference is to provide links to categories and existing galleries (e.g. See also: Rosa & Category:Rosa), as it happens often even with existing galleries that the gallery is missing big parts of the category content (hopefully not with Rosa ;->).
- @Christian Ferrer: : Looks fine to me. The only thing I would perhaps still change is to separate only the families of flowers with more than three pictures in a gallery and hide the others with <!-- --> (that way they can easily be separated as soon as there are enough pictures). I tried it for Ericales - but feel free to change it if you don't like it. --Anna reg (talk) 09:40, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- Anna reg Yes indeed I changed because honestly I prefer much more to keep the same rigorous logic of classification on all the page. We must make warm the cameras to fill the galery. However thanks, all the ideas are welcome. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 11:25, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- My problem with the rigorous classification is that the featured galleries are a possibility to show off some of the best images on commons - you can in fact reach them from the main page - and should therefore be exceptional galleries. Changing the background and the gallery mode are a matter of taste - changing the order into a scientifically more correct one is reasonable, but dividing about 130 images into more than fifty sections (the remaining pictures in the 'not yet classified section' all belong to families that would need another section) seems to make the gallery less presentable to me. As it's a featured picture gallery, filling it is not just a matter of uploading pictures but also of having them assessed as FP, which needs time - the gallery therefore won't drastically change over the next few months. --Anna reg (talk) 13:09, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- I like the family-order concept; but understand your argument too. Do you think only "order" is enough now? Jee 15:44, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Probably yes - even though my sister (who is studying biology) tells me how interesting it is to immediately see the families, I fear that for most people that will be too much scientific information for too few pictures. But we could try to ask for a few more opinions - e.g. by posing the question on the FP talk page - or perhaps even the FPC talk page, as the first one seems to have only very slow discussions (but as it's on over 150 watchlists we should still get an answer... by the way, there was a wish for galleries with bigger pictures in May ;->). --Anna reg (talk) 16:23, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- I like very much the family-order concept, it scientifically much more rigorous and so more intersting IMO. This concept has the not unimportant advantage to highlight families under represented and which are certainly the least met in the nature and thus the rarest, a reason of more of to highlight them and not to group together its.
It is also the general spirit of wikimedia of to be the most precise and most rigorous possible and it is thus logical that the galleries which representenet the finest follows this rigorous spirit of precision without compromise which is IMO one of the forces of Wikimedia. To sacrifice the rigor to the esthetic is not in the spirit of wikimedia or in any case not in the vision which I have of it.
But if we decide to change something to what I've already done I'm strongly against to make exceptions : or all in family-order concept or all in order concept but not sometimes family-order and another times order. It will be not only visually illogical but also harder to maintain when we shall not be any more there. When everything is made in the same way it is much simpler to understand it, to appreciate it and to maintain it;
With the family-order concept everybody can find some benefit there, those who have a rigorous and scientific spirit but the others also because I believe that it is a visual and esthetic improvement with regard to what was the gallery before and nobody found there nothing to say or to do. I did not ask for the opinion of the community to make this improvement because I think that is one; But I am opened to any discussion and idea and I listen to you for the size and for the links because it was also impovments and very good ideas. However I think family-order concept is the best choice and this is why I am going to continue on this way because it is me who start the reworking of this gallery.
But if you decide to ask for the opinion of the community I shall comply with the majority with pleasure and maybe other good ideas will appear. But while waiting for that I am going to continue like I already did, at least for the family-order concept until there is another consensus. I do not want to look limited and I like very much your help and your suggestions, Anna reg, Jee,
Any discussion is very good as long as it does not stop the action. IMHO. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 18:45, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- But I'm open to other opinions as Anna stated above. Some families have one or a few files now; so we end up as more sections than files. It may be reasonable to wait for more files before splitting them to families. On the other side, we have a concept, Wikipedia:Red link. Empty sections are a way to encourage people to contribute more!
- We have a lot of biologists here, Gidip, Archaeodontosaurus, Saffron Blaze, Notafly, MPF, Biopics, Pristurus; to name a few. Let us see what they tell. Jee 02:38, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Just an ekemple :
Order : Geraniales
Family : Oxalidaceae
-
Oxalis triangularis
(Love-plant)
This image is for now the only image of the Oxalidaceae family but also the only of the Geraniales order. To not put the family will be just less precise but the result will be the same : one image in this section. I hope that nobody want to group the orders too. This gallery must show the big diverdity and the wealth of wikimedia too, please do not undo what I made. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 04:55, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Christian, the {{See also}} seems better than simple wording. It supports translation too. Jee 05:19, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Jee, I began to modify the links with this template, but now I go to my job...(I was thinking too to create a navigation template at the end of the page for the navigation between all the FP galleries) -- Christian Ferrer Talk 05:31, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Another thought in my mind is the possibility to merge Plants and Flowers, as both share same sub galleries (order and family). Jee 08:20, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what my opinion on the merging idea is, as on the one hand it would make it easier to know where a picture should be (I just moved two pictures from plants to flowers and the dandelion seeds should probably be moved from flowers to plants), on the other hand it would mean more than 200 pictures in a gallery, which is already quite a lot (but still okay). Other things to consider would be if the fruits and vegetables in Food & drink should be left where they are or not, and what to do with unidentified plants (File:Dew on grass Luc Viatour.jpg, File:Polished slice of petrified wood.jpg) - create a section at the end?
- Creating a navigation template is a good idea - what exactly would you like to link with it? All featured galleries, the biology galleries or just the galleries with plant pictures (at the moment, plants, fungi, flowers and food & drink)?
- About the order-families - I don't want to stop you, I'd just like that the final result is as good as possible (and aesthetically pleasing is a big part of a good final result - which is why I'm not sure I like the see also-template better than the links you made before that. Perhaps the Template:Maincat would be a solution?). --Anna reg (talk) 09:49, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- The color of the template {{See also}}, I agree, is a bit disturbing, but we can or to change the background gallery gallery color, or create a "new see also" template, and we can also easily change the color of the navigation template. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 12:38, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Another thought in my mind is the possibility to merge Plants and Flowers, as both share same sub galleries (order and family). Jee 08:20, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

- This project is totally crazy! I love it! Bravo for the idea. For the choice of Order-Family is exactly what to do. My only question is blocking 200px; there he has no problem with some phone? --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:11, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
:) -- Christian Ferrer Talk 18:33, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Having been mentioned above, I got a signal on my notifications, so thought I'd pop along to comment.
- First, excellent idea on the sorting by order & family. Thanks for doing so!
- Second, yes, I agree with Jee's comment that Featured Plants and Featured Flowers should be merged; the Featured Plants, despite being parent to Featured Flowers, is decidedly empty of content - too many nominators / positive voters only seem to think about flowers, to the detriment of non-flowering plants, and non-flower parts of flowering plants (foliage, fruit, etc.).
- Third, more of a personal comment: I've never taken much notice of the Featured Pics, as the current candidate rules don't encourage good, scientifically valuable candidates. As a botanist, I would say that candidates must be documented natural wild origin; lack of documentation should be an automatic bar to Featured status. There are good reasons for this; anonymous cultivated plants are very commonly misidentified, and/or are very often not good examples of their species. As an example, the two photos tagged "Lantana camara" (Lamiales: Verbenaceae) are not Lantana camara, but horticultural hybrids of unknown origin (see GRIN Lantana camara and Lantana camara aggregate for reference). Unfortunately, the 'powers that be' behind Featured Pics appear to be more interested in twee photogenicity than scientific accuracy, so I don't see this being taken up.
Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 21:58, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Navigation Template
- Anna reg, Jee, I make a try for the navigation template, it is already on the gallery, if it's good we have only to put it on the others galleries. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 12:24, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- I made a few changes (main link to the overview gallery with a small link to the category). To be easily understandable for multiple languages I'd prefer to include pictures or at least symbols of the different galleries. Which made me think of the POTY-galleries and their symbols (I'm not sure if the divisions are the same as here or not, but we could check that - I just found the correct page: [2013 - About Icons]. Perhaps we could even ask Rillke if the translations used for POTY could be used for that template as well. The only thing I'm really not happy with are the more... links - they seem a bit strange in a template like that. --Anna reg (talk) 15:18, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Here is the template as it would be if you change the groups a bit and add pictures - I didn't change it in the template as the way I tried it now seems a bit too busy to me (and some are still missing). What do you think? --Anna reg (talk) 15:12, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
- Anna reg Your groups are relevant IMO, but the images are useful only that if they have a consequent size, personally I find it's a nice idea. I tried with biggest images below. Maybe Jee, Poco2 and A.Savin who are experimented in the FP community can say their opinion on these templates and on theses galleries : Flowers and Bridges. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 18:18, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

- I think the small icons is enough. Jee 04:11, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- Good job Anna, the new template is operational (even on the FP page), I made a mix of your ideas, I think it's a not too bad compromise. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 11:40, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
I like what you did so far, but I still think that the images seem a bit busy. Which is why I tried to fit the text below the images. I only tried it for half the template because so far it needs quite a lot more space than the current version and I once again don't manage to format everything the way I want - as soon as you have two lines you have a problem (the distance between the two lines is too big for the template and hovers over the next links). Somehow, I also didn't manage align the links without image vertically centered... Anna reg (talk) 13:23, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

- Anna, good idea, I added about some lines and the gap do not shocked me. I think that it is an improvement and much less busy than the others versions. I've not the time now but I will take a look later. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 17:52, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- I once again tried to reorder them a bit in order to make the template a bit more compact - otherwise I fear that the template is simply too big. --Anna reg (talk) 08:40, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
- Anna, I agree it's too big. I found a solution for to align the icons and the links. My english language is a bit limited and it's hard for to explain what is the solution... so I will do it very soon on the template. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 11:42, 1 August 2014 (UTC) I began to make it in the current template -- Christian Ferrer Talk 11:54, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

I tried to get a similar effect by changing the {{FP icon}}. The problem is that you have to give them as much space at the wider ones need... --Anna reg (talk) 18:50, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

QI criteria
Hello Christian,
concerning to this: for sure there can't be a " list of subjects which can be promoted" because this wouldn't be usefull and nerver could be a closing list. Mattbucks images of all english station platforms I totally find boring and marginal but they are for sure relevant and have encyclopedic valuable for this project. But some images of him like this random shot of water which could be everywhere I definitely no see a use. If his power of endurance for "random-waters-shots" would come to a same level like he is for his station-platform-shots we have problem at QI. Thousands of "random-waters-shots" whithout optical reference, even if they are perfectly made, would be spam and not a usefull contribution to this project. I would be very surpriced if there would be a majority supporting such behaviour. Regards --Wladyslaw (talk) 07:00, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- Wladyslaw, your point of view is logical and I understand it very well however I persist and sign : if this image had the sufficient qualities so I would have been happy to bring my support to its promotion. The rules are the rules, I respects its and the choice of the subjects does not go in account into the criteria of qualities. When the rules will change so I will change my way of reviewing. But in waiting of this change of rules, random-waters-shots are not a problem for me. -- Christian Ferrer Talk 12:04, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think we need an extra rule because we have already one that has general character. But I respect your view point which is different to mine. Have good light (for making photographs) --Wladyslaw (talk) 13:06, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze
Hallo Christian Ferrer,

--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:14, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Merci
for the nomination, I doubt it is one of my best though (I personally like this, this,.. much better), anyhow, merci beaucoup! I am glad at least one person likes some of my pictures :) This summer was horrible for taking macros, I hope the weather in France is better :) --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

- Hi Birdy, I agree it's not one of your best and also not my favorite but I personally like the use of small DoF and the composition. I was curious to see the reactions on the FPC page. I appreciate very much your works and I spent a pleasant moment to look at your uploads. - Thank you both of you, that is the nicest thing to say. Since I still enjoy taking macros I certainly will keep shooting those adorable little friends, unfortunately my free time is very limited.
