First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Template:PD-Egypt

[edit]

Hi BomBom, many PD-Egypt images are uploaded under the point 1 or 2 of the now depreceated template PD-Egypt: only 15 years for simple photographic or cinematographic works and only 25 years for applied art. Your new template is much more restrictive, Commons:Copyright_tags#Egypt makes most of the images using the template inaceptable for Commons. Is this intended? What about the 15/25 years terms, was it wrong? --Martin H. (talk) 18:48, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your work, I was aware of 160 of the law and that something is not correct with the template. So thank you very much for your work. I will store a list of files using the template at this moment. The consequence is, that images taken <50 years ago are up for deletion? I toke a sample, and that was one of your own uploads, so realy a very bold move. Thanks for your work. --Martin H. (talk) 19:14, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BomBom, can you review this file? The article you cited, nr. 178, is about {{Personality rights}}, which is not a copyrights related concern. No copyright notice on a website is not a reason for an image beeing public domain. Not the absence of copyright infringement but a permission makes an image acceptable for Commons. --Martin H. (talk) 11:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PD-Egypt-Art

[edit]

Could you create a template for art produced in Egypt? This would be very helpful because most of the images on commons need a template like this. This would of course include that if the work was published before 1981 it would be PD because of the 1996 law and otherwise 50 years after the death of the author. This should also include audiovisual ... etc. The idea is that PD-Egypt-1996 is very complex and it would be better if it's integrated within other templates.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 14:14, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe not needed, we have {{PD-Art|PD-Egypt...}} for photographic reproductions or {{PD-Scan}} as an additional template for scans if you want to clearify, that scanning or adjustment of brightness/contrast does not provide copyright to the person who scanned the photo. --Martin H. (talk) 18:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Veiled_woman.JPG, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:Veiled_woman.JPG]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Added doc to show category-names in T:LIFE

[edit]

I have expanded the documentation, at template bottom, adding the new section "Location categories" in {{LIFE}} to show location-category examples, plus allow the reader to show the "folder" of existing location-category names. I doubt that many would ever know how to list those categories unless that documentation show-link were present in the template. -Wikid77 (talk) 11:37, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LIFE photographer Dorien Leigh

[edit]

I am checking the years for LIFE photographer "Dorien Leigh" (worked in 1920) who could NOT have been the (3-year-old) model Dorian Leigh (1917-2008) photographed in the 1950s, sister of Suzy Parker, as noted in an obit about Henry Clarke in 1996: "Obituary: Henry Clarke - People, News - The Independent". Some claimed that her son committed suicide, perhaps because he was illegitimate, and Dorian stated, "Children are conservative" (they want to be normal to fit the peer pressure). Anyway, are there some Internet notes identifying the actual photographers for LIFE magazine? -Wikid77, 19:13, 5 April 2009

Most LIFE photos of 1900s cannot be used

[edit]

If a photo was taken in 1914, we need to prove the photographer had died within 25 years (by 1939), which would seem very unlikely, because World War I was mostly a gentleman's war and relatively few died. I suspect many photographers are active when young, and live long lives (they are mainly spectators and "keep their eyes open" to avoid dangers). Thus, most LIFE photos of the 1900s would not (yet) be public-domain, due to the photographers' long lives. What do you think? -Wikid77 (talk) 19:23, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's a discussion about this at Commons_talk:Licensing#Google_LIFE_images. There is no issue with any photos published in the US before 1923 (or other countries which don't care about the author prior to 1923, such as India or South Africa). For images produced between 1923 and 1938, this is definitely an issue - I have yet to identify a single photographer in the LIFE collection who died during this interval. Warning about NPG images

[edit]

Hi BomBom - I don't mean to invoke ownership here, but I wanted to warn you that I have already extracted high resolution versions of every image from NPG UK that has a high resolution image, and there's no need for you to do so - if you found an image there that hasn't been uploaded here, it means I declined to upload it for copyright reasons. In particular, I did not upload any images produced pseudonymously for a studio between 1923 and 1938, because these images are not known to be public domain in the United States. If you believe any of the images I missed are public domain, please contact me and I can upload them. This may become less true as new images are added to the site. Also, please upload original versions prior to any restoration, just in case someone else wants to later restore them differently. Thanks! Dcoetzee (talk) 09:16, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dcoetzee. I assume that the message you left on my talk page was in reference to File:Abdülmecid II with his family.JPG and its extracted image File:Abdülmecid II (1931).JPG. Please note that the image was uploaded back in December 2008, whereas your batch upload took place in March 2009. This means that I couldn't possibly have been aware of what you would later decide regarding uploading images from the NPG website. What I did recently was to use the NPG source template you created, which is probably how you became aware of the existence of my photograph on Commons. I have updated the licensing information on the description page, so please take a look. The photograph is in the public domain in the UK, although it is most likely still under copyright in the US. However, you don't need to worry about future uploads from the NPG. I simply wanted to host on Commons this specific photograph of Abdülmecid II, and I have no interest whatsoever in doing mass uploads from the NPG website, whether the images are free or not. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 16:27, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

VIC Saad Zaghloul

[edit]

Bonjour BomBom,

--Myrabella (talk) 21:53, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
