Citroën DS 1976 (camera car).jpg

[edit]

Are you really sure File:Citroën DS 1976 (camera_car).jpg is a Citroën DS? Citroën DS looks pretty different: File:1975_Citroen_DS.JPG. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 13:22, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the camera automobile is a DS, but is hidden by the guy at the right. The visible part of car is a Peugeot 504, used as a movie set. I have modified the image description to make things clearer (it is a pity I did not shoot the front of the car...). .:DS (shhht...):. 11:48, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A file uploaded by you is under deletion request

Thanks for uploading File:Fukang_meteorite.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Fukang_meteorite.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

There is an error report on your illustration File:Pultusk meteorite strewnfield.png. One of the users from pl:wiki explains, that (according to press reports from thea date of the impact) the Pultusk meteorite travelled form SW to NE, which is quite opposite to the arrow direction on your illustration. There are newspaper facsimiles at [1] (in Polish). Could you check it up, and possibly correct the error? Regards, Mulat (talk) 11:54, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Basilicofresco, you've requested to rename File:NWA 3151meteorite, brachinite.jpg to File:NWA 3151 meteorite, brachinite.jpg. [edit]

Thanks for bringing my attention back to my request. I've made the test run as requested after a little mind changing on my part as to how much I was going to do in one shot. At first I thought to do a simple edit just to demonstrate but then decided to fix the whole issue at once and created the autocatting template and applied it with the bot. Along the way, I managed to find at least two bugs in replace.py.--User:Doug(talk contribs) 12:32, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bot fixes

[edit]

Hi Basilicofresco,

This fix seems to break a category name. Obviously, the name Category:Row houses in Washington, D.C, isn't ideal. Category:Row houses in Washington, D.C (currently no category description page) has already 113 entries.

That change seems to break the attribution requirement. --  Docu  at 22:19, 29 May 2012 (UTC) (edited)[reply]

The first issue is not actually an error: it is the best guess to fix a problem. In this particular case it is not enough, but at least it attracts the attention and therefore the category can be fixed. I will fix the trailing comma on sunday. The second issue instead is less obvious: the link points the very same page, it is clickable in the very same way, reports the same text description, if you copy and paste the attribution in word processor the result is the same: the attribution is intact. In my opinions looks good, what is the problem? -- Basilicofresco (msg) 23:24, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The first fix is a problem. I don't think the fixes should run within category names.
I would have thought the expand fix would have an effect on the "Use this file on the web" button, but oddly it doesn't. Maybe both versions are a problem with that script in general. --  Docu  at 03:09, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The gadget can't read the wikitext. It's assembling the information from some special HTML-fields that are exposed by the licensing templates and {{Information}}. If authors want special attribution, they should use the |attribution=-parameter of the license-templates. -- RE rillke questions? 16:57, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure either if your but should be removing image source links, e.g. here. --  Docu  at 03:28, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

JFYI: There is a block request on COM:AN/B for your bot. -- RE rillke questions? 16:57, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very sorry for the delay. I stopped the bot. I will fix it on sunday, as soon I will come back home. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 10:38, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On 30 and 31 I was less responsive than usual because I was taking some intercontinental flights in a row... Next time I will stop the bot even if everything seems going well. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 17:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Issue "conversion of fake external links"

[edit]

About the conversion of fake external links (to ns0, ns6 and ns14) in wikilinks, I took a look at this one and I do not understand exactly why the "long link in the wikisource" version should be better than the "wikilink in the wikisource" version. I mean for example the source field is already a wikilink and if you click on "Use this file on the web" with the FrescoBot version in the author field you read "...based on Image:Granada - Mapa municipal.svg created by Emilio..." instead of "...based on [1] created by Emilio...". I took a look also here and I saw no problems or differences. Anyway, can we open a discussion about it? I have no interest in edits that do not help the project so it is important to understand what is the better solution. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 17:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One week ago I asked in Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Conversion of fake external links within attribution or source and nobody found any problem with the conversion of fake external links within attribution or source fields. I think it was the most appropriate place. If there will be no objections during the next week, I will start again the link syntax fixing script. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 06:33, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Syntax fix by FrescoBot

[edit]

Hello Basilicofresco, this syntax fix by your bot caused the disappearance of the entire description section, problaby due to a syntax error occuring now in the template, which is caused by the strange characters in the web link. Maybe you could have a look at this. Thank you very much, best wishes --Hareinhardt (talk) 23:40, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem occours when there are = inside the translated text (inside or outside a link). The odd thing is that inside [[ ]] the equals are ignored. The page was well fixed by Docu. I will improve my script in order to check and fix also this problem and avoid similar situations. Thank you. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 15:57, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, Dear Filemover!

[edit]

Hi Basilicofresco, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
  • Please do not tag redirects as {{Speedy}}. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Geograph

[edit]

Hi Basilicofresco,

If you edit geograph descriptions, you might want to include the cleanup suggested at Commons:Bots/Work_requests/Archive_5#.C2.93_and_.C2.94. --  Docu  at 11:46, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the suggestion! Did you notice any other invisible character in these descriptions? -- Basilicofresco (msg) 12:51, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well these are visible ;)
They could probably be replaced with a " or ''
A thing that is generally missing IMHO, is a colon or a full stop after the title of the image when repeated in the description (sample: diff, title is "Tall Ships event, Belfast" (also in the filename), it is followed by "Looking across the Lagan"). --  Docu  at 12:58, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in the meantime, {{int:license}} should be {{int:license-header}} --  Docu  at 13:03, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, these characters are not visible on my system with Firefox or Chrome, they are visible only with IE. So, along with these link fixes, now I'm going to add also the full stop and replace (outside the links):

  • “ and ” with "
  • ’ (U+0092) with '
  • {{int:license}} with {{int:license-header}}

Basilicofresco (msg) 13:34, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Thanks for fixing them. --  Docu  at 13:50, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Too slow?

[edit]

Hi Basilicofresco,

Just to let you know that I mentioned your bot at Commons_talk:Bots. If you plan on finishing the geograph cleanup in the near future, it should probably run at a much faster pace. --  Docu  at 10:03, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! New task was approved. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No-op fix by FrescoBot?

[edit]

Check out this strange edit your bot made. I can't see any difference between the revisions, although apparently MediaWiki can. Any idea? -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 22:43, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is not easy to see the difference: there was an invisible misplaced control character (ltr mark) between "Cyatheales" and "]]". This invisible character causes problems for example with some category tools. If you cut and paste "Cyatheales‎]]" and try to use backspace on it you will notice the invisible character. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 00:51, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll be damned! So there is. -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 03:28, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've decided to block your bot for the time beeing, as it's breaking links, as seen at Revision of File:US Navy 111026-N-OY799-125 Sailors stand lee helmsman and helmsman in the bridge aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. I think the question is, how on earth the invisible sign comes between a and ] and why typing a] sometimes gives ainvisble sign that I not typed]? --Martin H. (talk) 18:42, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about that as well. Maybe it's inserted due to the sign being present in some MediaWiki message or HotCat code and gets pasted along when copying categories. --  Docu  at 20:06, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect in my case the code was introduced via copy/paste actions, as I distinctly remember copy/passting that title into the uploader text field. Saffron Blaze (talk) 21:52, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I've noticed that your bot has made changes to the categories of some of the images I follow. When I look at the edit, I cannot see what is the difference (for instance https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:El_nino_north_american_weather.png&curid=3737997&diff=117037490&oldid=77745526). Hi there, I was just curious about a bot edit of yours. There is nothing is wrong, im just curious what the edit actually did because visually i cant tell. Here's the diff. Rationale for the edits of your bot?

[edit]

Hello Basilicofresco! Currently your bot is editing nearly all of my images, only one example. What exactly is the rationale for the edits? When I take a look into the diffs I do not see any relevant differences. Why are there illegal characters in the category names of my images? What can I do to avoid these characters in the future? I usually use Cat a lot of categorization. --Tuxyso (talk) 09:22, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! The bot removed an invisible LTR character, take a look here and here. For example in that case in "(Essen)‎]]" there is a misplaced special character between (Essen) and ]]. I believe that the main reason for these LTR characters inside the category links are copy/paste actions from a category list. However recently they are getting more and more frequent, so I'm wondering if there are other sources. Do you remember if you inserted these categories by coping/pasting from a category page? If you copy and paste [[Category:Exterior of Alte Synagoge (Essen)‎]] inside this webpage you will be able to see it as U200E character. This proble should not happen with automated tools without coping/pasting.... can you confirm it? -- Basilicofresco (msg) 07:12, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Although I see the usefulness of this task, I don't think your bot should touch author fields. Thanks for running it anyway,    FDMS  4    17:50, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please fix this issue!    FDMS  4    21:33, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The bot will skip it, but it makes no sense. The author field is not black magic: if there is a typo and fixing it does not affect the meaning of the attribution then we should fix it. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 22:10, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Ciao Basilico, grazie dell'interessante segnalazione!

What does your bot do???

[edit]

Hi .

I don't really understand what you Frescobot is doing... For two of the files of my WL it's the same before and after, no difference...

1, 2.

Can you please explain?  Thank you.. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 04:11, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! The bot removed an invisible LTR character, take a look here and here. I will improve the scripts in order to label as "misplaced invisible LTR marks" all the edits related to these invisible characters. At the moment some of these edits are still labelled just as "link syntax" and it is not enough clear. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 09:25, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Why you change other users comments, example 1. ?--Steinsplitter (talk) 10:15, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot is editing in old archive pages 2 and changing users comment. This looks like a malfunction (bot is ignoring namespaces?) and therefore i blocked the bot. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:49, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter - Thank you so much for blocking FrescoBot. I'm really sorry, I forgot to put the namespace parameter... Moreover I was able to read the email or check the bot until now (usually I can). I fixed the problem, can you please unblock it when you can? Thanks! -- Basilicofresco (msg) 16:16, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bot: misplaced invisible LTR marks

[edit]

Salve!

Oggi, FrescoBot a rimosso quattro marcature invisibili dalle mie immagine.

Reinhard (Aisano) -- Aisano (talk) 20:42, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. As I see, you replaced a lot of "invisible LTR marks" in categories, that I created. Could you please tell me, how those "invisible LTR marks" originate? How can I avoid those marks?
Greetings --hdamm (talk) 07:17, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Probably you copy and paste each category name from the page of the parent category. For example: if you select and copy "Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall‎" from the list in the page Category:Ancient monuments in Bangkok you will get this extra hidden character. In these cases, in order to remove this unwanted extra character, you should paste the name and then try with the backspace to delete the last character: you will notice that apparently the backspace will not work on the first hit due the hidden character. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 05:43, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Basilicofresco: Yes, that's how I did it. I will try your proposal. Thank you for the info.
BTW: can I somehow detect those LTR marks? --hdamm (talk) 09:25, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For example you can paste the name in this unicode analyzer or use the "backspace test". -- Basilicofresco (msg) 11:12, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

-- Basilicofresco (msg) 07:12, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Basilicofresco, seeing this change i wonder why your bot does not replace the link of the source. Regrads, --Arnd (talk) 06:05, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Aschroet: Hi! Well, the main reason is that at the moment FrescoBot is only replacing links to Commons and not to other sister projects. Links to Commons should be written without any doubt with the double square brakets syntax, but it is not clear if there is consensus about converting for example [http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Файл:Circuit_spa_old.png] to [[w:ru:Файл:Circuit spa old.png]]. What does Frescobot mean by this?

[edit]

Hi there. I noticed a change to the gallery page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nemesis_(1987_film). There used to be "center" at the beginning of the file list and "/center" at the end, but the bot removed the "/center". Why is that? Please explain. --Judithcomm (talk) 08:35, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Judithcomm! The opening center tag was outside the gallery, but the closing tag was inside, and it is not correct. The /center tag had to be placed after the /gallery tag, not before. De facto there was one opening center tag outside the gallery without any closing tag and one closing center tag inside the gallery without any opening tag. The bot removed the latter. Now I fixed the page. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 22:18, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. --Judithcomm (talk) 11:34, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning inside <nowiki>

[edit]

I see that the bot tried to fix a url within a nowiki at File:John Polidori.jpeg. Might be worth looking to skip such. I manually resolved the others that your bot was seen as adding blacklisted urls.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:47, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: Hi! Actually nowiki exclusion was already in place, but that specific substitution was able to ignore it due a strange behaviour... in any case now it is fixed. Nevertheless a blacklisted url should be removed on sight, so I'm not sure that silencing the bot in order to avoid warnings is the best approach. I mean, it could help to spot disguised blacklisted urls. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 12:58, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Basilicofresco, not long ago i came across a file with a date that was not parsed properly. I could repair it by removing some kind of invisible character, see [6]. Since i know your bot is also removing such characters from categories i wonder if it would make sense to generally remove these characters. --Arnd (talk) 21:47, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

please consider splitting your edits

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your work with User:FrescoBot. I ran into this edit, and I had a hard time finding whether any substantial edits were made. I appreciate that a lot of people probably ask you to merge edits together, but this kind of mass edits make it impossible to find what really changed. In this case, it was an understandable but wrong deletion of the image from the winners gallery. Quite impactful.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could in the future split the edits at least when they are this large. First do an edit with all the minor stuff that nobody will have a problem with, and then do an edit with the substantial changes. That way, people can more easily track what happens. I'd say this becomes relevant when you edit more than 10 lines at the same time. Thanks! Effeietsanders (talk) 03:16, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I understand your point and the fact that combining many changes in one single edit may somewhat reduce the probability of spotting "the important one". However there is not an easy solution for it. I mean, I cannot split the minor changes (mainly about spacings and syntax cleaning) from the rest because it is forbidden to apply only minor changes without any substantial change. So I should completely switch off the minor changes and it would be a pity. In this specific case there was 1 nonexistent image, 10 wrong double pipes, few gallery tag on the same line of an image and hundreds of unnecessary spaces. I guess that I could switch off the unnecessary spaces cleaning, but it helps to uniform the source text. Nevertheless I believe that you should rely on the edit summary: as you can see, the bot clearly specified that "nonexistent images" were found. It should be enough to give a clear idea of the main problem. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 08:47, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Well, I would argue that this policy is open for interpretation :) If you do two edits in rapid succession in these scenarios, it would still comply with the objective of the policy (don't pollute watchlists with too many minor edits). I cannot imagine anyone having a problem with that (although I admit, I have been surprised before). I don't mind the minor edits, but it took me three minutes to find the change, even though I was aware what to look for due to the summary. Especially on pages like this, it is essential that someone sees what images you remove. The alternative is that I have to apply a nobots tag to these pages. It's not your fault that images get wrongly deleted (or moved without redirect, or in this case: a typo was made), but the removal of the name from the gallery does make it harder to spot these problems. I imagine the same problem may be true for other galleries where completeness is essential. Effeietsanders (talk) 17:16, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File name with "!" causes problems

[edit]

In Pierre-Auguste Renoir catalog raisonné, 1972, bot deleted lines, for example "Renoir - woman-in-a-lace-blouse-1869.jpg!PinterestLarge.jpg|40". --Maltaper (talk) 16:13, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Maltaper: You are right... the problem is that a filename like that one with a false .jpg extension followed by an exclamation mark is a common typo and the bot is assuming that imagename is invalid... ok, maybe I should try to verify it before fixing it (it would be complex), but in my humble opinion first of all that kind of filenames should be avoided. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 09:34, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Visible mark removed

[edit]

Hi! I don’t know what invisible mark you wanted to remove here, but you ended up removing a totally visible space, which is required at that position by the French typographic conventions. Please be more careful next time. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:22, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FrescoBot

[edit]

At its user page, FrescoBot says: The maximum edit rate will be about 6 edits per minute. Thats not true at the moment, today it made, from 6:55-7:12, 500 edits in 17 minutes. TheRunnerUp (talk) 06:14, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TheRunnerUp: Hi! You are right, the speed written on the userpage was really outdated and it was running a bit faster than 12 edits per minute. I updated the userpage to the standard maximum speed value I've been using for years: 12 edits per minute. I also better adjusted the speed limit. - Basilicofresco (msg) 08:03, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot that sees the invisible!

[edit]

I have had some categories that should have worked but didn't. If I paste the category, then it works. I am usually typing but often paste, so: I am wondering if it is me with the ltr characters or if it is something else.

I have Category:Joesph Smit that does not work, but Category:Joseph Smit does work!

I like your bot. I cannot do what it does easily.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 20:59, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. Is there a way to prevent FrescoBot from editing a gallery page? This edit removed an item from a gallery because the picture went missing. In this case it's not ideal as the gallery page shows all winners of the ISAF sailor of the year award and allows to keep track of who has a picture and who doesn't. Cheers.
