The 204th Engineer Battalion is a combat engineering battalion of the United States Army Corps of Engineers belonging to the New York Army National Guard. Originally constituted in 1967, it now provides heavy engineering support as part of 153rd Troop Command.

Lineage

[edit]

The 204th Engineer Battalion was constituted on 1 December 1967 in the New York Army National Guard as the 204th Engineer Battalion. On 1 February 1968 it was officially organised from existing units in south-central New York with headquarters in Binghamton, New York.[1] By 1989 it was organised as a 'combat heavy' battalion and its designation officially became 204th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy). In this capacity, the battalion could support army or theater-level commands and provided heavy mechanised engineering. Its official duties also included heavy construction and earthmoving tasks. They were used to construct and maintain infrastructure, but were capable of handling entrenching and obstacle construction.[2][3] Nominally, each battalion consisted of five companies: three mechanised combat engineer companies, one bridging company, and one support company. The below organisation is the standard table of organization and equipment:[2][3]

Battalion equipment in 1989 stood as follows: 4 x Bulldozers, 8 x M60 AVLB, 8 x M728 Combat Engineer Vehicles, 4 x M88 recovery vehicles, and 12 x Medium Assault Bridges. Other equipment included flat bed trucks, road building vehicles, cement mixers, cranes, and related construction equipment.[2][3] Prior to 2006, the companies were simply lettered 'A–C', while the bridging and support companies held their own designations. By 1989, the battalion alongside the 152nd Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Corps) out of Buffalo, NY were part of the 221st Engineer Group (Combat).[1][4][5]

On 1 September 2006, in-line with the Reorganization plan of United States Army, all engineer battalions dropped their subtitles, and the 204th became the 204th Engineer Battalion. By this time, the battalion transferred to the 153rd Troop Command. The battalion's companies also were changed so that the letter companies became numbered. Companies A, B, and C were reorganised as Detachment 1, 827th Engineer Company; 827th Engineer Company; and Detachment 1, 1156th Engineer Company respectively.[1][6][7]
