Notes |
English: The piece of pottery that appears in this painting by Bouguereau, is not exactly a botijo. It's a typical piece in the "pottery of water" in the North of Spain and South of France, of possible origin franco (old tribal french) as "the càntir, the doll and the mamet" introduced by the restocking of the Marca Hispanica in the Catalunya Vella. Named pegar in euskera lenguage and pegà in gascón lenguage. Also produced in the Basque country, as a vessel of the same family as the "Biscay pitcher" (Basque: "pegarra, pedarra or kantarue"), higher than this and used for drinking during the agricultural tasks. The correct designation today (2012) would be pitcher in Spanish and was cruche a eau in French. Documentation and references: Natacha Seseña and Emili Sempere. See also the file: Pegar.jpg
