Remarks as prepared for Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison: Earlier this evening at 10:35pm, an off-duty Police Officer was seated in his private vehicle at a gas station, located at 914 Remsen Avenue, while the station attendant was pumping gas into his vehicle. Two males approached, both armed with firearms. One male entered the station attendant's booth and demanded money from a second worker while the second suspect remained outside and directed the off duty Officer and the gas station attendant not to move. As the two suspects exited the gas station, the off-duty Officer identified himself as a Police Officer and gave them verbal commands to stop. The two suspects turned around towards the Officer with the guns in their hands. The Officer discharged his firearm, striking one of the suspects in the torso, and the second suspect fled the location heading Westbound on Avenue D. EMS transported the injured suspect to Brookdale Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Officer was removed to Kings County Hospital for evaluation. A loaded .44 Caliber revolver was recovered from the scene. The second suspect remains unapprehended and the investigation is ongoing. That suspect is described as a male black, approximately 6'0" feet tall, and was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
The deceased suspect has been identified as follows:
