English: For centuries in the Middle Ages, the German merchants of the Hanseatic League dominated the transportation of goods along the entire North Sea and Baltic coasts. Through trade, they made their home towns in northern Germany rich and even founded new cities. In its heyday, the Hanseatic League grew into a powerful alliance of around 200 cities.
