It is my very good friend's dad. We also live near in Belgrade. He is also our (Serbian) famous mechanical engineer and a Professor. I am helping his son, Nemanja Majstorovic, who is a dentist, with social media, as a social media manager and graphic designer, and because Nemanja does not know how to upload to Wikipedia his dad's biopgraphy (obviously I did not know it, too), I said I will help. Edit kind: Undoing an edit that incorrectly changed the caption. The abuse filter said that "You tried to change the first line on a file page." This happened both with a multi-undo for both the page text and the caption, and for an undo only affecting the caption (an undo affecting only the page text went through properly).
Comments: I suspect the abuse filter is applying to the caption in the same way as the page text... but that doesn't make sense, since the caption is only one line (and doesn't support templates or section headers as far as I can tell). Pokechu22 (talk) 00:53, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
Hmm, looking at Special:AbuseLog/10870632, old_wikitext has the page text followed by the structured data, but new_wikitext is my edited structured data followed by the original structured data (and that one doesn't reflect the edit to the page text at all, either). Alright, it using autopatroller makes sense. I'm not going to request permission for it for now since I'm pretty inactive so having someone check my edits seems reasonable, though. The main reason why I was confused was that my first read of T298672 made it sound like the weird new_wikitext behavior was only for anonymous users, but instead I guess new_wikitext is wrong for everyone and the edit filter itself only affects non-anonymous (/non-autopatroller) users. For that specific page I was able to just manually change the caption, though reverting more complex structured data changes would be more difficult; if I do happen to see any more then I'll revert it at COM:ANV. (I mainly find vandalism through emails for page changes, for context.) Pokechu22 (talk) 01:38, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Comments: I uploaded a photo of a crustacean species. Initially, I captioned it as "Axius stirhynchus" (as in the file name) because I thought it was the correct spelling. But then, upon checking the WoRMS page (which is authoritative in this field) for this species, I saw that they indicated the correct spelling was "Axius stirynchus". So, I made changes to the figure captions in Wikimedia Commons.

However, I contacted the WoRMS administrators, and it turned out that their page was incorrect. Following my exchanges with them, the WoRMS page was corrected on September 23 (https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=107722). I would now like to revert my changes in Wikimedia Commons to use the correct spelling everywhere ("Axius stirhynchus").

Comments: It appears that the Commons mobile app is appallingly programmed. Making changes using it resulted in the wiping out of considerable data on two different pages. One was reverted by someone else and when I tried to revert that edit on this page the error message above appeared.

Add a filter to block the addition of the "No permission" template for new accounts

Based on the situation where disruptive accounts are indiscriminately adding the "No permission" template, resulting in many files being deleted (Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Unusual Deletion of Images of Vietnamese Artists), I have written a filter to help prevent this issue. By definition, then, if the underlying concern here is "resulting in many files being deleted," the concern is the admin that inappropriately deleted the images, not with the tagging. It is, in fact, a relatively common scenario for sister project users to notice an issue with an image in an article they are working on and to come to the Commons where either a) they have never edited before (first attachment, user_age issue) or b) rarely edit (user_editcount issue) and to add a tag. This filter, premised on a single incident (proposer fails to provide multiple instances to establish this as a perennial issue needing a filter) would prevent those good faith and necessary tags, and do more harm than good. Indeed, again, admins do the deletions. If a file is inappropriately deleted, the issue to be addressed is the admin, not the erroneous tagging. Эlcobbola talk 17:21, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
    @Elcobbola: I think your opinion makes sense. However, in reality, this has happened to many accounts: Special:Contributions/Nguyễn Thanh Vân dana, Special:Contributions/Nguyễn Minh Đào 1996, Special:Contributions/Vô Danh 69, Special:Contributions/Funny Man 1999, Special:Contributions/Thich an che, including some that have been engaging in this vandalism for months. According to the Vietnamese Wikipedia community, this is a sockpuppet with a long-standing grudge against the community, and it is certain that this sockpuppet will continue similar actions in the future. Therefore, I think we can negotiate two options:
  • Option 1: Reduce the threshold of user_age and user_editcount, and possibly remove the "confirmed" condition?
  • Option 2: There is no need to set "Disallow" for this filter, but simply "Warn" or do nothing. In this way, the Vietnamese Wikipedia community can help you monitor the behavior of this sockpuppet through the filter log and report if it is detected. This is a win-win cooperation.
I think it's not easy for a very new account to know about the "No permission" template, and a friend of mine (User:Băng Tỏa) said that adding the "No permission" template is the easiest way for a file to be deleted, compared to creating a DR.

This is not responsive to my point. It takes an admin to delete a file. If files are being inappropriately deleted, the issue lies with the admin. Even if there is an LTA whose socks use bogus no permission templates as their modus operandi, it changes nothing: it is the duty of admins to assess the validity of tagging. If an admin is acting as a credulous automaton, their rights should be removed. The solution is not to prevent new or low-volume contributors from expressing concerns, and a mere tracking filter ("no need to set 'Disallow'") is redundant to reviewing Category:Media missing permission. If the admin is the problem, then how did one of the most experienced admins on commons make this mistake? No one is perfect, but I think figuring out what went wrong here will take some time. However, when I went through that category, I noticed that most of the people adding the 'No permission' template are experienced members, which might cause the admin to lower their guard against suspicious accounts. Therefore, if there were a tracking filter, it would help the admin easily monitor unusual activities if they occur, as this filter would only track very new accounts. This would be an additional tool to make the admin's review work easier. I believe having it would be better, as not having it could potentially lead to more mistakes. On another note, if the admin creates a filter that disagrees with blocking, this filter will become a tracking filter, meaning it will only be used for logging purposes and will not block any accounts.
