What is the difference between Category:Market stands and Category:Market stalls? Can these two categories be merged (keep Market stalls) OR can there be clear, distinctive definitions/descriptions? JopkeB (talk) 13:48, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

To me a stall is a more purpose built, permanent structure the compared to stands, which are usually just temporary tents on polls or the like. Hence the name "stand." I think that's reflected in what is currently in the categories to. Like compare this image of a stall to this one of a stand. Thanks, Adamant1, for your reaction. So the difference is the degree of temporariness. Can we have these descriptions:

• Market stand = temporary structure of an elongated covered table (covered for instance by a tent roof made of fabric/textile or parasol) that can easily be moved or set up, used by merchants to display and sell their merchandise in for instance a market or street; it can be or a vehicle like a cart or truck. Though I would like to limit/reserve this term to/for only elongated covered tables and move the market vehicles to categories of their own.
• Market stall = permanent structure used by merchants to display and house their merchandise in for instance a street, market hall or fair.
• For vehicles from which retail goods are sold, like food and drinks, see Category:Retail vehicles.

That sounds fine to me. I guess there's Category:Retail vehicles for vehicles like carts or trucks. Although I'm not a fan of the name, but that's a separate issue. --Adamant1 (talk) 04:45, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks again! I changed the descriptions according to our new insights. I'll wait another two weeks to give others a chance to give their opinions. Then I'll make the proposed changes:

1. Add or change the descriptions in the categories involved, and also in the Wikidata items.
2. Move subcategories and/or files according to the new descriptions.
