The Trichambaram temple – also called the Rajarajesvara temple – is a pre-10th century Mushika dynasty era Hindu temples complex in north Malabar. Scholars identity this region as Sambarapura of Mushika-vamsam – a South Indian epic.
While the major shrines of Trichambaram temple are dedicated to the Shaiva tradition, it is best known for the Raudra form of Krishna, linked for the Kamsavadham legend. The complex includes Vaishnava and Devi tradition shrines. Further, it is a part of a much larger historic tirtha site that includes the Krishna temple of East Nada which is connected to the Trichambaram temple by a walkway. Several additional Vishnu tradition temples such as the Vasudevapuram temple and Devi tradition temples such as the Jala Durga temple, along with two temple ponds (Krishna temple Vishnu pond) and Trichambaram Chira are within few hundred meters of the Trichambaram temple. A Kathakali kendram is nearby that has historically been linked to support for classical dance and music art education by these Hindu temples.
The temple is mentioned in the 11th century Mushikavamsa mahakavya, a Sanskrit text that includes a history of the Mushika dynasty in the context of Tamil and Chera histories.
The Trichambaram temple faces east, has a square plan and local inscriptions suggest that the temple was repaired in the 11th-century. The notable shrines include those for Shiva, Dakshinamurti and Parvati-Rajarajesvari. The temple is the famous historic site of the annual Trichambaram Krishna–Balarama Utsavam (about March every year).
