English: The State President of South Africa was a largely ceremonial role, replacing the previous Governor-General as Head of State, from South Africa's independence in 1961 until 1984, while the Prime Minister remained Head of Government. In 1984 the post of Prime Mister was abolished and the State President became both Head of Government and Head of State. Since 1994 the position has been named simply President of South Africa.
