English: Misedashi is the formal debut of an individual in their geisha career. Typically this also the graduation of a young girl from shikomi into a maiko after a period of attending engagements as an "onlooking learner" (minarai) along her seniors. Misedashi customs observed include doing courtesy visits of formal introduction to the district's teahouses and okiyas. Women entering the career later in age, already proficient in the required arts, will debut directly as geiko.
