English: Ancient Macedonia, the seat of the Macedonian Empire, is currently considered to have spoken a Greek dialect, ancient Macedonian. The Romans ended the state, depopulating and repopulating it. Subsequently most of its territory was colonized by the South Slavs and became part of what is known today as the Balkan Slavic linguistic area. The fortunes of the multi-ethnic population during numerous Balkan Wars were varied. Today Lake Doiran (Greek) or Dojran (Slavic) is divided (not shared) between the Republic of North Macedonia (major holder) speaking predominantly Eastern South Slavic, and Greece (minor holder) speaking modern Greek. The Natura 2000 in Greece media come from the Greek side. They are the sole topic of this category.
