I agree with James F.  I've heard the suggestion that images should be legal in Florida, where the photo was taken, and in the photographer's country of citizenship. These aren't copy-vios; they are curvy lines drawn through fixed points in pretty colours. The claim is that, by extracting the positions of the stations from a map (that would be, well, pure data), this somehow makes the data under copyright. This is a ... 'curious' argument. Certainly, it is not a legally valid one in the United States, AFAIAA, which is quite frankly all that matters in the case of Commons hosting.

:* I think this should be treated like any other screenshot of anything on the web - it's not free unless the author explicitely releases it or the copyright expires.

My point is, that human rights are more important than copyrights, always, in any case. There is a public interest in what is going on in countries like Iran. There is a public interest to make these images available for educational purposes. If the concept of wikinews/wikimedia does not allow the use of these images, it needs to be improved. You could add a category of media which is copyrighted, and in which there is a public interest because it concerns serious human rights issues. We should avoid Copyright paranoia concerning the German ''Panoramafreiheit''. We should keep pictures of buildings which are publically accessible taken from outside. I do not agree with the Bundesgerichtshof decision on the Vienna Hundertwasser house which has forbidden to publish photographs taken from a building. According to Austrian law (BTW: Vienna is in Austria) the pictures were correct. Ironically, the majority of the people voting to keep the article on Source were Wikipedians who wanted these lists somewhere aside from Wikipedia who came to Source to influence the vote. I don't believe they will be deleted from Source until they find a more permanent home elsewhere but I was trying to help find that place because there is a chance they will be deleted and then all of Brian's hard work will have gone to waste.
