Doré

Just got the new scanner today, and for Christmas I got a Victorian edition of Doré's Inferno as well (also a modern print of his Rime of the Ancient Mariner, though that one would be very hard to scan).

I'm actually quite ill today - half the family I visited for Christmas had a very bad cold, and I seem to have caught it - but the scan I did looks good, and I have no doubt that I can do the whole thing. Adam Cuerden (talk) 16:38, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Ooh, I'd love to see Don Quixote. We used to have a scan from that as an FP, but it was starting to get too low-res. If you get me some raw files (PNG, 600 dpi?) I'll gladly do restoration work on them.

Portrait Tips

Hi Tomas, I will get an opportunity to shoot some pictures of an important delegate on a visit to Tanzania. The event will take place at night and I would appreciate a few tips you could provide regarding taking portraits and action shots of the event. Is flash usage necessary? Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Profile size creep

The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.

Activity criterion

It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Arizona photos

Hi Tomas - I see you're in Arizona at the moment. Wondering if you could try to get some pics of trees in the area, particularly conifers (pines, cypresses, junipers, etc). Actually, pics of conifers from Mexico would be even more valuable, there's hardly any from there on Commons, several species not represented on Commons at all ;-) Mostly, you'll need to go fairly high in the mountains to find them. I thought about the difference between a friend and a lackey, and I believe I know now that the greatest difference is that a friend will always tell his friend the truth even, if he is sure his friend would rather not hear some of those truths. This is first rate censorship. In my opinion you have absolutely no idea what the magnitude of your actions represent. The image illustrates a legitimate method of expression, it is a valid, legal, ethical method and deliting such material is equal to deleting any legitimate image or file in Wikipedia, no matter how distasteful it may appear to you. It is clearly stated in the uploads... I am the author of every image, therefore the source, the collage is mine and the individual pictures are mine. All taken in public places and some of them even featured!!! The images are within fair use for editorial purposes in my country. ¿Nada mejor que hacer? ¿Como después de titular "¿No tienes nada mejor que hacer?" me dices "estimado Miguel"?. ¿Cinismo?

¿Sabes lo que es una obra derivada? ¿Has hecho tú la imagen de Bush, además de la foto derivada sobre esa imagen? Si es así, hazlo constar en los datos de la imagen.

¿Puedes fundamentar que la foto de Bush está en el dominio libre? Lee las políticas presentes en Commons:Obra derivada. No es solamente una leve observación, he sido durante años burócrata de Commons, no creo que estos dos últimos años la cosa haya cambiado tanto. La gente vota sin saber de los temas. Lee, opina después de leer e indica, después de leer, si es que yo no tengo nada mejor que hacer o si lo que ocurre es que yo me preocupo por el proyecto Wikimedia.

En todo caso, debes indicar la licencia de la foto de Bush y su autor. Esa foto no está en el dominio libre si no lo demuestras, es deber tuyo, no mío.

Ahora bien, yo estoy muy harto de Commons y de sus luchas. Indico. No lucho. Que quereis seguir con un copyvio. Adelante. En todo caso podría responder que sí tengo algo mejor que hacer, pasar de los usuarios de Commons que ante una denuncia de Copyvío votan sin leer las políticas mencionadas.

Respuesta a tu último comentario y un ejemplo

Voy a coger tu foto mañana mismo (es un decir, este no es el ejemplo) y voy a hacer una obra derivada de tu foto. Mi obra derivada va a consistir en recoger la imagen de Bush (pues tu foto es de 4,368 × 2,912 pixels y permite hacer maravillas) y borrar todo lo demás. Respetaré las licencias, es decir, te voy a nombrar como autor de la imagen de Bush y no voy a nombrar a nadie más, pues tú no nombras a nadie más. La voy a publicar y voy a cobrar. Si alguien protestase, diría que tú (o Commons) eres el responsable: la foto está ahí.

En Commons no solamente ofrecemos imágenes para las wikipedias, las ofrecemos, simplemente las ofrecemos, y permitimos obras derivadas a todo el mundo y para cualquier supuesto siempre que se respeten las licencias. Tú dirás. ¿Estás dispuesto a asumir que algo así pueda ocurrir?

El ejemplo: Una foto mía de hace tiempo que ha sido borrada (semejante a esta otra File:CGAC, Santiago de Compostela Cropped.jpg, que no ha sido borrada, pero podría o debería serlo por el mismo motivo pues es casi igual, menos mal que está presente -no lo sabía- para poder ejemplificar ahora). Fíjate en la discusión y en los motivos del borrado: Commons:Deletion requests/File:CGAC, Santiago de Compostela.jpg.

Tras este comentario, desaparezco de Commons. No me interesa discutir. Seguiré subiendo mis fotos, proponiendolas si me parece, pero no votaré ni colaboraré más. He realizado más de 60.000 ediciones, bastantes más, con varios usuarios que nunca se cruzaron, en los diferentes proyectos en que he participado, y no acepto la desconsideración a la que usuarios como tú me someten, no acepto tampoco que me rayen el coche, que me desatornillen las ruedas..., por eso dejé de ser burócrata.

Encantado con que te parezca que tu imagen no focaliza bastante la foto de Bush aunque te acabo de demostrar lo contrario.

Everytime someone tries to discuss the copyright status of a file uploaded by you, your answer is a flood of personal attacks. You talk about conspiracy. You talk about censorship (does it even apply here, a free media repository?). You rescue sections of the "Administrator's noticeboard" opened by you years ago, sections that ended in nothing.

1. YOU were the one that brought a selective conversation from the past to the current discussion, you opened the door to that. So don´t complain about getting some of your own medicine.
2. YOU were the one that established the tone years ago.
3. Censorship is just that, censorship. I don´t know why you have a problem with that. Just read the good, old plain dictionary definition. No need to modyfy or adapt the meaning to fit sensibilities. It applies here, in China, in Spain, in Canada....
4. In light of our past exchanges, I do not trust either your motives or your judgement.
5. I upload what I consider valuable images that cost me time and money, and release them into the public domain. I do this in good faith and with enthusiasm, and respecting the intellectual rights of others, in the same manner that I expect mine to be respected, so I do not take lightly attempts to censor them. As an author, I know the law, its spirit and its limits.
6. Perhaps, as some have suggested in your own talk page, you should fine tune your approach. Maybe you should approach the authors before making DRs.
7. Dealing with me is easy, you talk easy to me, I respond easy, you talk hard to me, I respond hard.

No, it was you the one that spread the FUD in any discussion, deletion poll, etc you are involved. And you always seem to take it personally: "So don´t complain about getting some of your own medicine." Is that the proper tone here, or in any other Wikimedia project? I doubt it.

Censorship is what happens when you are not allowed to express yourself. Here we have a free content repository: if a given file is not free, according to the Commons' rules, its deletion simply *cannot* be considered censorship. This is not a (mass) media, so freedom of speech & censorship do not apply here. Unless you claim the right to upload files which do not follow the current guidelines, of course. Do you?

I don't care whether you trust me or not: you are not required to do so. You need however to trust the community and its rules. So please stop you personal attacks (that is what I have asked you politely) and start discussing constructively.

I don't care if your photos cost you time or money: those things have nothing to do with their copyright status! OTH please don't ask for respect if you are not willing to give it to the people who try to ensure the legality of the uploaded files.

You are wrong: I didn't started the DR, but I approached you about the issue. At the DR, I left an easy comment and a reasoned vote. Your answer? Dodo, We could have a long academic discussion on several points, but lets start with Censorship: According to the link you provide above, Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. So in this case the image is the "public communication", it is objectionable at some level (this is because it may be considered a copyvio or whatever), for it is proposed for deletion (this is the suppression part), and the proposer is an admin (this is the controlling body). So you see, anyway you want, right or wrong, ethical or not, legal or not, reasonable or not, we have all of the elements of censorship. You don´t like the term, but it is what it is. It may be that your interpretation of censorship pushes your buttons, as attempts of censorship push mine. So we are at best, under the effect of our interpretations. A photograph, in the large context of the discipline, is a form of speech. You may read a little bit about photography in the works of Pierre Bourdieu [[3]]in his work "La fotografía, un arte intermedio" or Susan Sontag [[4]] in "On Photography". That may expand a little your perception of what photography is. Inevitably, you will arrive to the conclusion that photography is a form os speech. I'm just trying to say that Commons is not a public agora that anyone can use to express her/himself: it's a media repository with a set of known rules. You call absurd my pointing out a case of censorship, yet you do not contemplate as absurd the call for deletion based of alleged copyvio. Could the judgement to call for the deletion be absurd? The moment you identify or label a file as a copyvio, you also elevate it to speech or communication, for there can be no copyvio if the image does not communicate something. I find your arguments rather short in general, with narrow interpretations of key concepts. One characteristic of media is its graphic nature. Through graphics we can synthetize concepts and ideas, much more effectively than with descriptive words, hence the expression "a picture is worth a thousand words". So it is practically impossible to load media devoid of some content to communicate, something to express. Photographs always describe, hence communicate something. A picture of an insect communicates, at the basic level, a physical description of the insect, or it could also descrive a behaviour, or even the interest of the observer in its shape, colors, environment, or aesthetics!!! A picture is, after all, when taken by a human, a way to express the perception of the world, for her/himself to others, therefore as an act of self expression. If you render a photograph as a collection of pixels devoid of its communication or meaning, then, by extension, no copyvio can occur, for it would just be a series of unconnected pixels or dots that communicate nothing, and then we wouldn´t need a thing called Commons. I also took the time to browse through your gallery and you have some really nice work that I think you should consider nominating for FP. Your images are both relevant and have quality, but be warned: sometimes the evaluations are neither generous nor qualified, but such is the way of life! As to your picture of the calves heads, it is a fantastic shot. It is in a way a work of art and a powerful statement. Photographically speaking it has rythm, good exposure, composition, etc., etc., but that is really a minor point, the main one being what the image says, about us, about our ways, about sanitized death, about the mechanization and desensibilation of death... and much more. Really a great shot. Photography, above its technical and descritive elements, is also a language, and this image is inside that language. Out of courtesy I will answer. For me, in a few words it is called freedom of expression. Freedom in expressing what I personally consider censorship practices that are out of line with regards to legitimate photographic work that is censored out in Commons based on wrongly applied criteria that affect the spirit of this effort. I ask you, what is more disruptive, to openly question and illustrate a behaviour that results in outright censorship or the act of unfair censorship based on wrong premises? As an open society, we must always be critical with ourselves. I upload files that have a legitimate use, illustrative, editorial, descriptive, etc., etc. And as an author, I do care for what in the photographic and journalistic practice is done with regards to protecting copyrights, but I cannot concern myself with the possibility of someone, somewhere making bad or illegal use of my images. If that were the case, imagine how many images now in Commons are candidates for that! Pictures of public figures advertising all types of products, promoting ideas, etc., etc. It would really be a mess!

Just as a volunteer adming takes it upon himself to nominate an image for deletion, I take it upon myself to question the validity or legitimacy of that admin´s desicion. We cannot afford not to question unilateral desicions. The fact that this particular image refers to wikipedians is secondary in this discussion. The main discussion is the issue of censorship. And this particular image is a parody of the practice of censorship. Humor is "something" that exists in human experience, even though it may not be funny to you. Now you may say that I am expressing a POV, but even then, human experience is about POV. If you were to use that criteria, then wipe out anything that has to be with a social cause, abortion, anti abortion, religion, nationalism, etc., etc., and what will we have left? A bunch of sterile images, pretty flowers, birds and insects. Photography is a language that describes the human experience, like it or not, for good or bad.

So you find my behaviour more and more disruptive. Well, that is what you say, it may be true for you, but all it is is your opinion, based on your personal backgroung and experience which I cannot qualify nor understand. One thing is for sure, from my perspective, is that you lack sensitivity on the issue of censorship. And just as you may find my behaviour on the issue and my oposition to censorship disruptive, so I find it on those who practice it based on false premises. --Tomascastelazo (talk) 14:46, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Good-sounding words, but the main issue here is not freedom of expression, censorship and such, but the fact that copyright laws exist and the fact that as a community we have given ourselves some rules, some of which try to deal with copyright. Do you find copyright laws stupid? Go try to change them (and good luck). Do you find Commons' rules stupid? Propose new ones, and we'll debate and eventually approve them. Everything else is trying to make POINTs, and that's disruptive behaviour. It's not my opinion, but your actions.

And that is precisely the problem, that many admins pass judgement apriori based solely on their opinions and interpretations without regard for reason or truth. This is to congratulate you (friendly and with a lot of smiles, it is not an attack, only soft irony) but I'm fascinated with your argumentation work as comment of the Jordanian desert castle picture in FPC. Your words seems to be a long scholar catalogue named "How to Argue in ten lessons". That's extraordinary, all argumentation technics, recipes and tips (well identified by me, but in french, sorry) are used in a short demo, maybe you could write a book (I've read some about these technics, but you are the best !) My friend, are you a teacher, or a politician, or a sociologist, or an advertiser, a lawyer maybe ? Or a Jesuit  ? Just one point: In Germany where I took the photo you nominated for deletion, it is impossible for such a device to be protected by copyright law. It is too common. There is another law which is called "Geschmacksmusterschutz" but it has to be registered and expires after 25 years a) I don't think Mercedes did register such an ugly device and b) on Commons, I never saw that we care for Geschmacksmusterschutz, because it is not a full copyright law.

And BTW, I nominated your image for deletion to discuss. It was previously tagged for speedydeletion without a discussion. Now, because you preferred to contribute "unproductive edits", you are unable to do so. Maybe someone is kind and transfers your arguments to the deletion discussion. Well, Catrinas in public markets are just too common... Catrinas are a 100 year old figures, and every single one is an offshoot of the original ones, created by Guadalupe Posadas and ingrained in Mexican culture. The fact that some people are ignorant of this, does not make them "unique." They may be unique to the uneducated eye in Mexican culture. These figures enjoy the same status as the picture of your truck in that regard, but because they are original to you, then they wrongly enjoy a different type of attention. To a Mexican, the picture of your truck can be as alien as the picture of catrinas to you, yet a Mexican cannot nominate to deletion with the same degree of latitude. This block is an arrogant, unfair and and abuse of power act, and the administrator and his cronies are nothing but judges and executioners simultaneously, for what is behind it is nothing but your all too human opinion. The pictures I nominated for deletion follow exactly the same logic as yours and Colin´s... yet coming from you to me they are legitimate reasons, but coming from me to you is considered harrassment and a blocking offense. The fact that utilitarian objects including vehicles are not protected by copyright is quite well-documented in our guidelines (such as Commons:Derivative works) with reference to statute and case law. Whether or not these figurines are protected by copyright or not does not seem to be equally well-documented here on Commons. Nominating multiple files for deletion when the copyright situation is clearly documented here is quite different from nominating a single file for which the copyright situation is not clearly documented. Genuine mistakes of this nature generally don't lead to blocks unless the nominations continue after the nominator has been informed of applicable guidelines.

More significant, then, is that nominating multiple files for deletion just to make a point about your personal objections to real or perceived copyright principles when you don't actually believe that they should be deleted is quite different from nominating a single file for deletion because you genuinely believe it may need to be deleted. Furthermore, it is clear that you have deliberately targeted files uploaded by users who nominated your files for deletion. Regardless of the merits of any of the deletion nominations, it would seem that their nominations were motivated by concern for Commons and the project's compliance with its own policies, whereas your nominations were nominated by personal animosity.

Based the arguments you made, I understand that you are upset and that you feel that you have been treated unfairly. I think it's good that you made them, because it gives an opportunity to further discuss and explain the reasons for the block. After all, temporary blocks are pretty meaningless if you don't understand why you've been blocked. I hope that you will use the duration of the block to reflect on some of the points I've made above. The Inquisition had a beautiful logic and modus operandi: It took anyone to accuse anyone of heresy. The suspect would be arrested, tortured. The only possible outcomes were confession and then death. If the suspect died before his confession, the rationale was flauless: If he was guilty, he would go to hell; if innocent, then he would be in God´s arms... I find it interesting how the discourse here is tailored to suit the logic of the executioners and ass kissers. The block is meaningless to me. I do not kiss up to anyone. My contributions are to the general public and they come from a spirit of contribution and even if I toot my own horn, are to a certain degree valuable. I want to thank Jim Woodward for illustrating clearly the double discourse that takes place here. In his comment `here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Vindictive_deletions_to_make_a_point he uses a positive and then a negative, twice (this is btw, a standard style). This is what clearly goes on, on the one side, the good thing is said, and on the other he establishes the justification for punishment. The actions that led to this block, as NVO has stated, is nothing more than selective justice. My criteria for nominating for deletion and that led to this block is in essence the same one used to nominate mine, yet because I crossed the threshold I was blocked. Why not take a look at my argument, instead of speedely invalidate the argument? There may be a slight level of truth there, unless it is of course uncomfortable. Furthermore, while I am blocked, my future as a wikipedian in commons is being discussed, for the possible permanent ban has been put on the table.
