Toe stepping

edit

Thanks for helping out on Category:Architectural structures, but keep in mind jumping in within minutes of someone starting work on a CfD can create some edit conflicts. No big deal, just might want to allow a little time (hour or so) to let the user closing a discussion at least get the ball rolling on the change, or talk to the person who started the change to coordinate the edits. Obviously, if it is a big project, all the help is much appreciate over the days or months it might take to implement a big one.

One note, I noticed you removing {{Topic category}}, are you abandoning use of that template, or just temporary in this case? Josh (talk) 16:50, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. The removal of {{Topic category}} is temporary, by the way. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 16:52, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/06/Category:1 people

edit

Thanks for doing God's work and helping with the CfD backlog ;) There's a few other categories to move btw. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:22, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I've moved Category:1 people hugging to Category:1 person hugging. I've just redirected Category:1 people in art to Category:1 person in art as a duplicate category. Category:1 and 1 people is a container category for two dissimilar people, thus the name is valid. The "1 people" substring in Category:Rossiya 1 people and Category:Fox Sports 1 people is coincidental and not related to this issue. Category:1 people can be moved only if the category redirect Category:1 person gets deleted. Thank you. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:34, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

বাংলা উইকিপিডিয়া

edit

Ahmed Reza Khan (talk) 13:15, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 13:22, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

AWB task not working

edit

Somehow this change removes notices. Please fix.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 16:56, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this is expected, and similar notice will now appear only if you have more than 200 files in that category. Only then you'll worry about diffusion. The old concept of "permanent diffusion" is being deprecated per Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/01/Category:Categories requiring diffusion. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 16:58, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think the correct replacement would be {{CatCat}}. Please fix.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think {{CatCat}} is for categories that will only include subcats. However, normal categories (like Category:Sanborn maps of the United States) are supposed to contain some files, and {{CatCat}} is generally used for certain types of categories, like top-level categories (Category:Images, Category:Maps, Category:Views) and "by name" categories (Category:People of India by name). Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:04, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's by far the better replacment for "As many pictures and media files as possible should be moved into appropriate subcategories." than waiting for 200 files.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:09, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can reduce the standard threshold of {{Diffuseat}} by setting |1= to numbers lower than 200 (say 100, 75, 50, 20, 10, or even 0). Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:11, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I've set the |1= parameter of {{Diffuseat}} to 0, so that the diffusion notice will appear if at least one file is present in that category. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:14, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
THere should be notice on the category that files should be in parent or subcategory, not there.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the notice will appear if there is at least one file in that category. Try it. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:16, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's not helpful if someone looks for categories to place their files, they shouldn't need to add it first to figure out that it's a bad idea.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:18, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think that's the idea of "permanent diffusion", something Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/01/Category:Categories requiring diffusion has sought to eliminate. The final comment by Joshbaumgartner says, "It sounds like a move towards eliminating the dubious distinction between 'permanent' and 'temporary' diffusion needs. A category at any given time either has too many contents and requires diffusion and should be listed somewhere in this tree, or it does not have too many contents and is therefore not in need of maintenance and should not be listed here since no work is required on it. I get that there are some categories who need diffusion more often, and I think the distinction was made prior to developing a good tool to only list those that actively have too much content. Now that we have that, listing categories which are compliant with their listed threshold seems like clutter in the maintenance bin." So, it is up to individual users to diffuse them into subcats, and having a "permanent" notice for diffusion does more harm than good. I'm currently removing thousands of categories from Category:Categories requiring permanent diffusion using AWB, and turns out only a few thousand categories actually need diffusion. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 17:25, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
That seems to be more concerned with categories that can actually have files than the others. Seems the notice was also used for categories that would be better with {{CatCat}}.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 17:27, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I gave an ample time for other users to object Josh's proposal. But since no one responded long after two weeks, I decided to close the discussion and implement the proposal. I will open the discussion if necessary. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 18:17, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
There isn't really anything wrong with the proposal. It just happens that you are implementing at categories where it doesn't apply.
 ∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 18:19, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Along these lines, I undid your changes to {{CatCat}}. That template is for categories that should never contain files. {{Diffuseat}} is for categories that have a lot of files that would be better in subcategories. That's not the same thing. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:14, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sbb1413, I don't understand why you changed Category:Motorway exit signs to Category:End of controlled-access highway signs for all files. I am aware that the concepts and the nomenclature for motorways/highways/freeways differ in different countries and I am not a native speaker, but in Central Europe (and I am pretty sure anywhere else) an exit of a motorway is clearly something different than the end of a motorway. So please reconsider and fix these categorisations. Thanks, --Luftschiffhafen (talk) 09:53, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I was consolidating motorway/freeway/expressway category to a single universal term. If an exit of a controlled-access highway is different from the end, I'll reconsider it. Thanks. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 10:19, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for fixing it. --Luftschiffhafen (talk) 08:31, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sbb1413, Regarding these edits: [1], [2], can you tell me why did you remove those categories..? Those belong to Bangalore.. --Gpkp (talk) 19:41, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

They are already put under Category:1986 in Bangalore, that's why. Also, Category:Bangalore itself is under Category:Populated places in Bangalore Urban district, and the city category mainly covers the area covered by Category:Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), excluding the suburbs that don't fall under its jurisdiction. Same to other Indian cities, where only the municipal areas are considered. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 06:50, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sbb1413, Bangalore-rural and Bangalore-urban actually falls under ‘Geography of Bangalore’ category. Do you agree if I make that edit..? --Gpkp (talk) 15:30, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand what do you mean. Category:Geography of Bangalore Urban district and Category:Geography of Bangalore Rural district have their own categories, and Category:Geography of Bangalore is already a subcategory of Category:Geography of Bangalore Urban district. Again, the city of Bangalore covers a smaller area compared to Bangalore Urban alone. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 15:59, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Here is a map that shows the distinction between BBMP, Bangalore Urban, and Bangalore Rural. Category:Bangalore and its subcategories usually cover the BBMP area. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 16:03, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
ok Thank you Sbb1413. --Gpkp (talk) 16:10, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
