Error in the Norwegian locator maps

edit

Dear NordNordWest, thank you for your excellent series of locator maps of Norway! I am writing to you to inform about what I believe is a minor error. You see, the former municipality of Rømskog no longer belongs to Østfold, but was merged with Aurskog‐Høland in 2020, and thus belongs to Akershus today. See this link for reference. Excuse me NNW, look this source together with previously I posted. The former one is updated and consists of 16 districts but it is not very clearly drawn. Dear NordNordWest. The parliament of Azerbaijan has voted to reestablish the Aghdara Region (Azeri spelling: Ağdərə, previously known as the Mardakert District), which was abolished in 1992 [1] and was located within these borders (sorry, there is no full pre-1992 map for reference), stretching over three neighbouring districts. Would it please be possible to update the following maps?

If you have time, it would also be very useful to have a location map with the Aghdara District highlighted. Thank you! Parishan (talk) 03:25, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Croatia

edit

Hello NNW, I would like to say thank you very much for your big effort and contribution related to Croatian maps. Really appreciated. In pl.wiki this has enriched thousands of articles. I've created map modules and templates accordingly. Seeing how busy you are, I wouldn't dare to ask you for more, but if you decide to come back to this region one day, neighbouring Bosnia have 3 main entities (Federation of Bosnia and Hercegovina divided into 10 cantons, Republika Srpska and Brcko District), so within next months/years it shouldn't be that involving as Croatia was. Greetings, Mathieu Mars (talk) 20:28, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I definitely have to look for other requests before I start a new series of such maps. :o) NNW 07:17, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Azerbaijani map update

edit

Hello @NordNordWest! I would like to thank you for working on and updating the administrative map of Azerbaijan.

There's an official update to the map. Actually, the law was adopted on December 27, but almost nobody noticed that. The day Aghdara district established, some exclaves in Karabakh were removed and merged to the surrounding districts.

Here's the link to the law. I would be very glad to help if needed. Cheers, Toghrul R (talk) 14:48, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

There is no map for these changes? NNW 17:35, 6 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@NordNordWest do you mean visualisation? Unfortunately, no. But I can provide the details. Most of the exclaves were removed.
Article 2.
Malıbəyli, Aşağı Quşçular and Yuxarı Quşçular were transferred to the surrounding Xocalı district. So they no longer are subordinated to Şuşa district. For instance in this detailed map and this file, villages away from mainland Şuşa are removed based on the law.
Article 3 & 4.
Yuxarı Veysəlli and Divanalılar (the exclaves of Füzuli) were removed and the area was merged to Xocalı district. The villages can be seen from this file. Ağbaşlı was removed too, but it was too small and was not on the maps you made
Article 5 & 6.
Yuxarı Məzrə (the exclave of Cəbrayıl) was removed and the area was merged to Xocalı district. Can be seen here
Article 7 & 8.
Alıcan (at the rightmost of Laçın district and under Şuşa district) was removed and the area was merged to Xocalı district. Can be seen here
Article 10.
The area of Xocavənd within Qubadlı was removed and merged to Qubadlı. Can be seen here Toghrul R (talk) 08:31, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
PS: As it will affect many maps, I'll provide more details regarding the changes after checking them again Toghrul R (talk) 08:37, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question about how you work

edit

Dear NordNordWest.

I'm glad to watch your works. Your works have become an excellent example of location maps in Wikimedia for a last couple of decades. Even though I don't know SVG very well, further I have been thinking what can I do for community while I am learning Adobe Illustrator. If I have a mind to help others who work in Wikimedia, I think it would be better to ask for advice rather than drawing without benchmark.

  1. First, I'd like to ask if your question about how you work is okay. If not, you can skip the question below.
  2. What should I refer to? For Wikipedia, look at what has been written by others, and for the programming code, look at the code that has been written by others. It is how to learn. Then, what about SVG? What reference did you start with?
  3. In the future, can I update your work?
  4. Lastly, what was the driving force behind your steady activities?

Sorry for my clumsy English, and I hope you peaceful.

Best Regards. --호로조 (talk) 07:24, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! It depends on the scale which data I use for a location map. Sometimes it is OpenStreetMap, sometimes it is VMAP data etc. VMAP is quite old data but for coastlines and rivers it is usually good enough. In some areas it is necessary to update the data. I don't use applications in which I have to program anything, it's a vector graphics editor, sometimes in combination with a GIS. I have learned in the last years that there are many users who are able to handle geographic data but lacking cartographic knowledge (as an example: see what happened to the amount of waterbodies in Ecuador location map.svg.) In other cases the size in pixels or the shown area were changed so all templates in the WPs were incorrect and the uploader didn't have thought about it. So I don't encourage anybody to update my location maps, especially as long as I do not know what he/she is able to do and knows about cartography. The rest is quite easy: it's a nice hobby. "adm location maps" and "Category:Location maps (series N)"

edit

Hello NNW

I have a question, what are the "adm location maps" map series referring to? "adm" means "administrative"? (on my maps it does mean that)

And what is "Category:Location maps (series N)" for?

Thank you Milenioscuro (talk) 14:34, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! You are right, "adm" is for administrative (and "rel" for relief). Series N started after long discussions about de jure and de facto boundaries in location maps. I wanted to have de facto (with all its problems but less than the other way, I think) and I thought that the dark blue waterbody lines were to dark as lots of WP projects show names in location maps which are a bit difficult to read. So I made this blue lighter in administrative maps, decided that it has to be de facto (exception: during wars) and created a new map series: series N (for "new"). That's all. Kenya districts and county maps

edit

Hello. I've been trying my hand in creating svg maps of Kenya divisions without avail. Could you help me create:

SVG files of Districts of Kenya in;

  • 1962 (they were 40 plus Nairobi),
  • 1968 (Thika District eliminated, Central Nyanza split into Kisumu and Siaya
    • 1989 (Kisii District split into Kisii and Nyamira
    • 1990 (Vihiga created after a split from Kakamega, South Nyanza split into Migori and Homa Bay)
  • 1992 (Meru split into Meru and Tharaka-Nithi, Kericho split into Kericho and Bomet, Makueni from Machakos)

The most important are 1962, 1968 and 1992. In 1962, Kenya's map did not include the Ilemi Triangle, 1968, half of it.

By 1992, there were 46 districts plus Nairobi Area, which have identical boundaries with the counties of Kenya like this

Most importantly the maps containing info about specific present-daycounties seem to be giving an error see for example Kiambu County. Some counties need to be zoomed for easier navigation by readers.

I would have asked for more but I don't want to burden you with too much work. You can decline of you feel it's too much work.

Personally, I've been learning to learn to create good maps like you but I don't seem to get it right.

For any clarification please contact me.

Thank you in advance! Tylusine (talk) 15:54, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kurze Rückfrage wegen ggf. erforderlicher Kategorienamensänderung

edit

Was meinst Du?

EACC80 (talk) 07:02, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Moin! Mit Kategorien beschäftige ich mich üblicherweise nicht. Wenn du hier was umbenennen willst und das begründen kannst, kannst du das meinetwegen gerne machen. Mit HotCat lassen sich die Inhalte auch schnell verschieben. Du brauchst also eigentlich keinen Bot. Viele Grüße, NNW 08:10, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Danke für die schnelle Antwort und den Hinweis - wollte auch nur vermeiden, das am Ende was verschlimmbessert wurde. by the way: beim Themenkreis Symbole der Landkreise (Wappen Siegel und Flaggen) bleibt das "the" noch in Gebrauch - Beste Grüße zurück EACC80 (talk) 08:17, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Due to the Lebanese Civil War between 1975-1990, rail transport in Lebanon, not only ceased to exist, the vast majority of the railway network (railway tracks, railway stations and trains) was destroyed, and has never been restored.

Russia locator map

edit

Hello NNW, let me start by thanking you for all your hard work here on Wiki Commons, I really appreciate it. I'd like to ask about how to change the default locator map on Wiki commons of European Russia, with the version without Crimea. Currently, the template Locator Russia+ automatically shows the European Russia map that shows Crimea as disputed. This might have made sense prior to 2022, as it was the only Russian annexed territory in Ukraine, but it is quite misleading at present day. Because Russia not only annexed more lands but also annexed lands it does not control. So showing Crimea as disputed seems to be highly misleading. Thank you. Ecrusized (talk) 10:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! It's a complicated topic and I can explain only my private point of view. Crimea has been annexed in 2014. At this point always no one described it as the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War, just a conflict that led to very few consequences. Until today most publications I know describe 2022 as the beginning of the war. I do not want to show annexations during wartime (neither international nor civil war), that's senseless. By this there is a difference between the annexation of Crimea and the later annexations of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia. NNW 10:31, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
At this point always no one described it as the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War. The article Russo-Ukrainian War described the start date of the war as 27 February 2014.
There is a difference between the annexation of Crimea and the later annexations of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia. According to whom? Russian government? Not a single international entity besides North Korea, Eritrea and Syria has recognized the illegal annexation by Russia. This should be removed from Wikipedia asap. Ecrusized (talk) 15:01, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia articles are no reliable source for nothing and en:wp is not the centre of the univers. The difference is the point in time: before war, during war. According to whom: as I said in the beginning my private point of view. How many countries recognize the annexation of the Golan? And are there maps in Wikipedia showing it? There are at least two different views to a conflict. Always. And it is okay to show it. NNW 15:28, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear Sir or Madam, I have come across a very popular YouTube channel that is illegally using masses of copyrighted images and videos, which apparently also affects you (in this case CC images without attribution are used). It concerns this channel (https://www.youtube.com/@clevercamel), this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58Olyuoxd7A) and this image(https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Bolzano_in_Italy_(2018).svg), of which you appear to be the copyright holder.

If you need further information, please let me know. I have only analyzed three videos so far. However, it looks as if all the material used on the channel has been used in breach of copyright. It is therefore best to also evaluate the other videos in order to find any further copyright infringements.

I am a photographer myself, but I have rarely experienced such blatant disregard for copyright, which is why I recommend that you take legal action here, especially as the channel operator monetizes his channel and also earns money with third-party works.
