Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Arkady Ostrovsky, March 2018.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

YouTube
editHi, I've noticed that you've uploaded quite a number of screenshots from YouTube videos with Creative Commons licences, and was wondering if you could let me know what procedure you follow when adapting and uploading them? I'm looking into uploading some and want to know what the best practice is. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:52, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Mattythewhite, hello. Not sure what exactly you are struggling with. The YouTube search has a Creative Commons filter. Firstly, be careful and make sure that the video (or its part/screenshot), you want to upload to WikiCommons, is indeed a property of the channel owners and not just a reused content from elsewhere. For example, the CC-licensed TV footage on some anonymous YouTube channel "username37542" is likely the license laundering. Take note if the channel is verified (though it's not always a definitive sign in this regard, both ways: this is an official channel of the TV network, yet not verified, and the licensing of a movie trailer here is, conversely, dubious); if it's not verified, look for backlinks to the channel from the official website if it exists, etc. The minor copyrighted elements (in a video licensed by the legitimate authors) are appropriate though. There are some online services to get the video files of different resolutions from YouTube. I don't know about their correlation with the YouTube user policies, so I won't name any specific ones. Check on YouTube for what is the top resolution available: for the different videos, it could be accessible through the one serviсe but not from the other. To make the screenshots, I use the free MPC-HC player (ALT+I saves a screenshot, CTRL+ →/← shows a video frame by frame). If we talk about the portraits, I choose the most relaxed facial expressions. Preferably, eyes fully open (both are seen; aimed in a face direction or at a camera), mouth closed (it's usually still a phase of talking, but it could be not discernible from a screenshot - like it's just a calm face), face not cropped by the frame borders. I think, I make up to a couple dozen screenshots, but usually less than that. Then I choose the best one (or a couple if there is a number of good shots from different views).I crop the shots with the free Paint.NET editor. The slanted upper arms are usually not to be cropped vertically: it's either the tight cropping from the sides or the whole cropping out of the shoulders. But I'm not a pro in photography. Everything that I described regarding the composition is just intuitive. While uploading, put the YouTube-CC-BY tag and the review request (the latter without any parameters). AFAIK, the publication date is not really relevant for the CC-licensed works (in comparison to the copyrighted ones), so, instead of writing in the YouTube date as it is, I use pretty often the {{Other date}} template with the "by" argument. --INS Pirat (talk) 23:04, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, OK, you're a license reviewer. So I don't get your question. --INS Pirat (talk) 23:16, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your detailed advice, I appreciate it. I may be a licence reviewer but I didn't have any experience of uploading screenshots from YouTube so I wanted to know how best to go about doing so. Here's my first attempt. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:13, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

editHello INS Pirat I hope you're doing well. I reviewed some of your youtube upload, and I must say you're helping reviewer with the timestamp. I suggest if you could use Template:From YouTube for file source description for future uploads. Thanks for volunteering, stay safe. --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 14:26, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- OK, I'll use it. Thanks. --INS Pirat (talk) 14:28, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

You also do not have the right to contribute obscene images that are contrary to the rules of the message, while defaming a worthy person. There are quite a few links on the Internet to other photographs of this person, but you yourself made the decision to include this very bad frame in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.92.140.135 (talk)
- If you find this picture obscene and defaming, you should nominate it for deletion again with this reasoning (i.e. COM:PEOPLE#Defamation). Regardless of my opinion, I don't have either the technical ability to delete it or the user rights to decide on application of the Wikimedia policies. --INS Pirat (talk) 20:37, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Hello INS Pirat I hope you're doing well. I have removed your no permission tag and fix the upload. Thanks, stay safe. --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 15:39, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. My web browser didn't render the YouTube frame in the original source. --INS Pirat (talk) 16:55, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

File tagging File:Sam Feldt press shot 2021 (cropped).jpg
editThis media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Sam Feldt press shot 2021 (cropped).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Sam Feldt press shot 2021 (cropped).jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
