2023 Washington Open

edit

Wikipedia had no photo of world No. 24 Zheng Qinwen until now. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 21:49, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@JamesAndersoon, Kacir, and Marcric: Hey tennis folks, hope you're all doing well. I notice your names in my watchlist often, and I'm glad the photos I've uploaded are getting noticed and cropped and used. I've just finished uploading ~800 of the ~3200 photos I took during three days at the Washington Open this week.

My goal in Washington was to take photos of players whose images were missing from Wikipedia, and I think I got all of those singles players. I also like asking players for portraits, something not usually done by professional photographers on tour.

You may notice a new camera in the metadata – it makes taking action shots significantly easier and makes everything much sharper and, with the new lens, larger even. Compare Dasha in daylight in Paris to at nighttime in Washington. I'm just an amateur, so it'll take some more practice to (for example) better keep subjects in frame, but it's a worthy upgrade. Hi Hameltion, I am currently writing the Citi Open on the Czech version, where I will move the article to the Washington Open. I noticed your photos from Washington, they are great. And finally we have a picture of Zheng Qinwen! I also missed the picture in the cs version WTA Awards. Thanks for the nice photos, Cheers Kacir (talk) 22:10, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Hameltion, as already said the priority is for players not pictured before. Thank you for your contribution. 🤜🤛 --Marcric (talk) 23:44, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello Hameltion, I'm so thankful for your contribution. Unfortunately, there are just a few sources where you can find images of WTA players - usually it's https://www.flickr.com/photos/sirobi/. I totally agree that players with not even one picture have a priority! Btw, I like your images a lot! Bravo!
p.s. Can't believe this day come that Zheng Qinwen get a photo - I thought it last forever xD JamesAndersoon (talk) 16:02, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks all for the kind words, good to hear from you. And @Pommée, you're another in this group I appreciate for finding my photos usable. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 22:39, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello Hameltion, first of all: many thanks for the photo's that you contribute to Wikimedia Commons. Indeed, I find them very useful. I am surprised to hear that you are not a professional photographer, because your way of working is, in my view, lightyears better than that of most amateurs that have their images added to Commons. Nice detail: when I watched Diede de Groot and María Florencia Moreno playing at Roland Garros (video by Eurosport), after the match I noticed you taking this picture of them, one half of which now illustrates her Dutch Wikipedia article, thanks to you! Keep up the good work, Pommée (talk) 14:41, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
BTW: is there anything you could do to prevent your upright photo's from showing up sideways in the crop tool? Although I have learned how to crop images in sideways position, it is easier to do in the normal upright position. Cheers, Pommée (talk) 15:03, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Pommée, that's warm praise. Yeah, the rotation issue is a little annoying, and probably has to do with the Orientation | Rotated 90° CW in photo metadata; maybe CropTool should import that data? Other random photos taken with digital Canons do the same thing. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 01:16, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hi - just wondering if you had any pics from the 2nd Cary challenger this year. 2603:6080:68F0:A210:E014:465A:9A7:59F8 01:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, there are quite a few photos I haven't uploaded yet. I was there Wednesday, September 13. Will upload pictures of players like Eero Vasa, Connor Thomson, Tristan Schoolkate, etc. eventually. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 01:20, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Notification about possible deletion

edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Autopatrol given

edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 23:31, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

edit

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
