How to promotionate images

edit

Hi Dschwen, I´d like to know which is the mecanism to get a Quality Image promotion tag, should I select a quality image from another user first?... Many Thanks in advance Valdavia (talk) 10:19, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

First step is to nominate them. Promoting will have to be done by an independent reviewer. Instructions are on COM:QIC, or just take a look at the nominations on the page. Look at the ones with {{/Nominate|.... --Dschwen (talk) 21:25, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

VICbot notification

edit

Hi Dschwen. Is there no notification for the VIC creator, when is different from nominator? If not, would it be possible to have that done as well by the bot? --Elekhh (talk) 09:45, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

LargeImage template discussion

edit

Dschwen, I commented on the LargeImage Template talk page and wanted to know if you'd seen my comments. If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks. Earthsound (talk) 20:43, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

In commons' current state of emergency you are not allowed to discuss or work on any topics unrelated to "sexual images". So unless you have some LargeImage's of genitalia to show me I cannot reply to your request right now. --Dschwen (talk) 20:46, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
crickets chirping, tumbleweeds rolling by... ...anyhow, I answered on the template page. You probably won't like my answer. Sorry, but I was dreading to reply, as I was struggling to come up with a diplomatic answer... Tell me if I failed ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 21:23, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I'm not on here every day. ;) Yes, you've given a diplomatic answer, although I disagree with your new arguments, as well. I've replied there, again, this time with different ideas/suggestions. :) Earthsound (talk) 17:29, 25 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Octopus and light house

edit

Hi Daniel. Have you seen my octopus/ lighthouse panorama yet? I like that image very much, but it has many errors. The originals are not so good. I hand hold the camera while standing on a very, very slippery rock literally on one foot. Would you like to give it a try, but I have to warn you, it will be time consuming job with no certain result. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 23:03, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, just send the original frames to me, I'll try my best. --Dschwen (talk) 23:17, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I did. They are very, very bad, tiled, out of focus and so on. Please do not spend so much time on them. Best wishes,--Mbz1 (talk) 00:34, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, got them. --Dschwen (talk) 00:37, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Daniel, I am afraid it was beyond repair. I have done a better (I hope) job File:Pigeon Point Lighthouse and tide pools.jpg, but I used different shots from different sets of images (because I did take more than one set of the images). I am sorry I bothered you and took your time. Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 20:02, 9 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

clarify?

edit

Was this sarcasm?... sometimes I have a hard time telling, so apologies. To old wiki hands much of what meatball has is stuff we already all know but I find it very useful to periodically re-read it if only to remind me of what I knew already. Other people hate it. ++Lar: t/c 21:53, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, uhm, no, that was not sarcasm at all. I spent about half an hour following links on that site. and reading articles! I think that I must have stumbled across it once before, but i could not remember the sitename for the life of me. Anyhow thanks for the link. As far as I see what I wrote pretty much agrees with the article on the Meatball Wiki, only they phrased it better and have many more insightful comments. --Dschwen (talk) 22:30, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
See, I'm glad I asked :)... Thanks for clarifying! Yes, there is a lot of good stuff there. That one, and Meatball:DefendEachOther are two of my faves on that site. ++Lar: t/c 03:03, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
HA! That is what I read on there when I found the page for the first time. (I thought it was "never defend yourself, let others defend you"). That is a really great strategy, which I tried applying many times now. Unfortunately not every time people want to be defended :-D. But it is always worth trying. --Dschwen (talk) 03:20, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tetsujin 28-go

edit

May I ask you why you deleted my picture of Tetsujin 28-go under the excuse of "No freedom of panorama in the source country: for works of art" if, right at the Commons Licensing page concerning Brazil, it's written:

"According to Brazilian Copyright law of 1998 (in Portuguese) translation: Freedom of panorama Art. 48. Works permanently located in public places may be freely represented by painting, drawing, photography and audiovisual processes."

As far as I know, the Wakamatsu square in Kobe IS a public place, and a 18-meter statue IS something permanently located in there...--Rikaris Talk 00:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Copyright law of Brazil is not relevant here, as the picture was taken in Japan. And Japan does not have FOP for public art. Furthermore the files are hosted in the US, which does not have FOP for public art either. Sorry. Sure looked like a pretty cool statue :-(. --Dschwen (talk) 00:11, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
If that's the case, let me tell you: you should delete ALL Tetsujin pictures on Japanese Wikipedia, as well as a good part of all pictures posted here at Commons; I doubt very much that, say, an American photographer who took a picture of a statue in Jordan, for example, and posted it on English Wikipedia, would be thinking about the copyright laws of that arab country...--Rikaris Talk 00:21, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
You can upload locally to en.wp under a fair use rationale. On commons the media must be free and unencumbered by copyright restrictions. I do not know the policy on the japanese wikipedia and I do not delete files there, but we are at commons here in any case, and your pictures were uploaded to commons. As for the american photographer: unfortunately some uploaders do indeed not think about copyright laws in foreign countries, but neither does that make tohse laws go away, nor does it have any influence on wheteher those files are accepted on commons. Ultimately someone will spot and mark the files that are in violation with commons policy (as it happened with your files). --Dschwen (talk) 00:56, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you for having the patience of explaining the reasons to me in detail. I'm sure sad that my Tetsujin picture (as well as my Princess Sapphire one that was also marked for deletion) cannot be shown here. And to think that I had even taken the care of asking some people at the Commons Village Pump discussion page in Portuguese before posting them! It seems I was misguiden... :(

Now I have a question: if I get a written permission from the construction company that made the statue (or should I get a permission from Hikari Productions, the company that owns the rights to Mitsuteru Yokoyama's works?) and send a copy of it to OTRS, will I be able to undo this deletion or will I have to load the pictures again?--Rikaris Talk 01:57, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

You'd have to get permission from the rights' owner. If it all gets confirmed I (or any other admin) can undelete the files with a simple mouse click. --Dschwen (talk) 03:09, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

deletion of File:Dd-Semperoper-in-1.jpg

edit

Could you please explain why this image was deleted? --Traveler100 (talk) 05:05, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The image description stated that the permission only covered non-commercial use. Unfortunately that is not sufficient for commons. --Dschwen (talk) 11:59, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Miami-Dade_County_Correctional_Institution.jpg

Hey, do you remember what intersection the institution is at? I know from the signs it is near the Everglades Alligator Farm. As per http://www.miamidade.gov/Corrections/facilities.asp I am trying to figure out which facility it is. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:01, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Uhm, I geocoded the image for that purpose :-) --Dschwen (talk) 14:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Intersection is Tower Rd and SW 376th St. --Dschwen (talk) 14:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
D'oh! I didn't see the geocoding tag!
Thanks for the intersection! I'm looking up to see which institution it is. Apparently the pictured prison is next to the Homestead Correctional Facility WhisperToMe (talk) 15:11, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, it's either the Dade Correctional Institution or the Homestead Correctional Institution - I don't know which one (they both have the same address)... It's a state prison facility, not a county jail facility. WhisperToMe (talk) 15:15, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Alright. I think I got the ID from Wikimapia. Let me double check. I can rename the file if we find out which one it really is. --Dschwen (talk) 16:07, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! The odd thing is that the current Homestead Correctional Institution was originally the "Dade Correctional Institution," while the current Dade Correctional Institution was built in the 1990s and was originally the "Dade Correctional Institution Annex" WhisperToMe (talk) 16:20, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do be careful: You managed to link to a talk page (which was linked as the location for feature requests) instead of the main page which you were describing. I fixed it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:36, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Adam. I know where I linked to. I added a header to that talk page with further links. In general I think it is better to have a single link in the sitenotice that leads to a landing page with more information and further links. More detailed information can be presented on that landing page. Was the talk page the best choice? Probably not. Why not create Commons:Media of the day and have sections requesting help, translations, nominations etc. --Dschwen (talk) 13:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC) P.S.: anyhow, I thought in you sitenotice you asked for collaboration in general, which I thought would justify linking to the talk page. Well, nobody is perfect, and this should be easy to sort out. --Dschwen (talk) 13:57, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion velocity

edit

Hi, why the deletion velocity of this image was so fast: File:Profilové foto.jpg? Only five hours in the evening. I would say, that you should wait couple of days?--Juan de Vojníkov (talk) 07:39, 18 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The image was tagged as speedy and looked like an obvious copyright violation. I did see no reason to kepp this on the site any longer. Images tagged with nopermission, nosource, etc. are a different story. I only delete those after 7days. Should I undelete the picture? --Dschwen (talk) 12:12, 18 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, I have recomemded the user to send a permission to OTRS. So, when they got a permission they can undelete it by their own. Thx.--Juan de Vojníkov (talk) 13:26, 18 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion requests

edit

Hallo Dschwen!

Grüße, Grand-Duc (talk) 12:23, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

2. Visit the deletion requests log and place the following code at the bottom:

3 Notify the item's uploader or the creator of the page by placing the following code on the user's talk page:

vergessen. --Dschwen (talk) 14:58, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Grüße, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:29, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Scrolling edit windows

edit

I'm having a problem with the edit windows in Commons and WP. When the existing text doesn't fit in the window space, typing a space or a backspace (and probably other characters) makes everything to scroll up or down, way beyond the current cursor position. This is very annoying and prevents the normal use of the editor. What I'm doing now is to type the text in Word and paste it into the window. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:03, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

What browser are you using? I haven't noticed this behavior neither in firefox nor Google chrome. --Dschwen (talk) 15:08, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm using Explorer 8 (I was forced by MS). For some weeks, after the change in Commons' skin, the flaw disppeared. But is back again. Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:24, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Viel Spass, viel Glueck. --Dschwen (talk) 13:09, 28 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Dschwen!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photo shop help

Hi Daniel, I took an image of a hawk with a mouse. The hawk was flying. The quality of the image is bad, but if it were possible to make a silhouette from it, it could have been an interesting image IMO. The question is how to make a silhouette? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:04, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not a Photoshop expert, but with Gimp I'd use the curves tool to increase contrast until I have a black bird against white sky. It's fairly simple. I can give it a try if you give me the picture. --Dschwen (talk) 18:30, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dschwen-Bot

Hallo Dschwen!

--Dschwen (talk) 23:30, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I suggest uploading as a new file. Otherwise: renominate. --Dschwen (talk) 21:28, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

New bot?

edit

Hi Daniel, I know that you are good at writing bots.

A new bot categorizing pictures by EXIF Metadata would be appreciated. The parameters I think might be useful are:

  • Camera manufacturer
  • Camera model
  • Exposure time
  • F Number
  • Exposure bias
  • ISO speed rating
  • Date
  • Time of the day
  • Lens focal length
  • Exposure Program
  • Exposure mode
  • Metering mode
  • Flash
  • White balance
  • Digital zoom ratio

--Nevit Dilmen (talk) 21:54, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mh, yeah, it would be even better if that functionality would be built in into mediawiki :-). Some of those potential categories would be pretty huge (like flash, whitebalance, ISO speed). I already worked on a bot for Camera Model catrgorization, but ended up using it only for my own pictures :-). The subtle problem with that is that such categories are already existing and they do not map 1:1 to the way the models are named in the EXIF. Another problem would be the accuracy or time zones of the camera clocks. I keep mine on UTC (but it is off by about 10mins still), so it would be impossible to determine Time of the day, as it depends on the longitude I'm at. The bot would have to categorize about 5 Million images. This would take a loooong time. All in all I think it would be more feasible to build a toolserver application with a query interface for the EXIF matedata. --Dschwen (talk) 22:35, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
TU for response. Yes I see it is a huge task. Toolserver seems to be the best solution.
Regarding time of the day, it might or might need not correct for a universal time, depending on the aim. The aim might be as simple as to find shots taken at morning, or those shot at noon. But that might also need to know the sunrise, sunset for the location.
--Nevit Dilmen (talk) 23:17, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that I have no way of finding of which timezone a particular camera is set to. If a picture is geocoded I can determine the local timezone, but that is not sufficient as the two may not be the same (for example many people do not adjust their camera clock when traveling). So even finding which shots are taken in teh morning or evening will be very hard if not impossible without human intervention. --Dschwen (talk) 01:01, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Flag of the United States

edit

Could you please revert it back to the November 2009 version, the current colors have no legal standing, it's based on some non-binding, non-legal, non-authoritative document, using a textile based color standard that's no-way applicable to RGB in any way, shape, or form, which current conversions are based on one person's self research, and then selected for no apparent reason other then the lack of objection on the talk page, even though the pantone colors are specified directly in Texas Law As being the legal colors of the United States Flag, which surely trumps this document, Thanks. --Thegunkid (talk) 01:55, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Geocoding Bot

edit

I discovered you bot (DschwenBot) today because he include the location in one of my photos (that to be exactly) and i'm wondering... The bot cam put the geocoding in all my latest photos? They are all in one category and have beem taked with same camera, so I believe that the bot will find no problems in do that.

Can you do that, please??

Best regards, Béria Lima Msg 20:44, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Beria, the bot has been running for months now and should have geocoded every picture. But recent outages might have caused it to skip images. I'm instructing the bot now to take another look at the last two months of uploads. --Dschwen (talk) 21:23, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot. Béria Lima Msg 21:40, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, the bot does not discover the locations of pictures. It merely reads the coordinates in EXIF and converts them to Wiki coordinates. Your iPhone 3G has Autogeotagging but your Canon PowerShot G7 does not, so it produces pictures without coordinates. You must geocode your photos manually, before uploading or after. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:46, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Merde! Why buy a camera if your cell phone is better in times like that. :P Thanks for explanation Jim Henderson. Béria Lima Msg 22:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's why I bought a en:Nikon Coolpix P6000 with built in GPS a year and a half ago. As one of the early GPS cameras it doesn't provide locations as reliably as a modern cell phone but it sometimes makes prettier pictures, and when it misses the location I find coordinates manually. I never intend to buy another camera for myself that doesn't do geotagging. Jim.henderson (talk) 11:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
The geocoding bot is working nicely (pleasant that it ran twice the other day) but the most recent photos including File:Sylvan Terrace Jumel HD jeh.jpg (manually tagged online) and File:Sohmer Piano fr RI jeh.jpg (bot coded) do not show me any roundels in Google Earth or Google Maps. Quality images candidates

edit

Hello Dschwen, QICbot does fine work. Sometimes nominating quality picture candidates I would prefer your bot notifying the uploader of promoted quality pictures, not me as nominator. How do you think about the idea? Cordially, --4028mdk09 (talk) 10:50, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The first username that appears in the nomination gets the notification. This is usually your name as it appears in your signature, but if you add by User:uploader in your nomination, then the uploader gets the nomination (replace "uploader" with the correct username (Ex. File:BigPano.jpg|. Would notify User:Diliff ) --Dschwen (talk) 11:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stitching

edit

What program(s) do you use for stitching? --The High Fin Sperm Whale 04:20, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Whale! I use hugin for stitching (with enblend and/or enfuse for blending). There are a couple of "tricks" that I found important to get goos results: use vertical guides in panoramas with buildings, use horizontal guides when applicable (view of the ocean where you have a sharp horizon line would be such a case), use the finetune all menu option and throw out all keypoint pairs that cannot be automatically optimized, manually add keypoints to get even coverage of all frames (there are exceptions to that). Familiarize yourself with enfuse, it is a great tool as well. It is harder to get an up to date hugin version for windows than it id for Linux (not a problem fer me, as I use Linux only :-) ). I won't lie to you the learning curve is a bit steep, but the userinterface was improved a lot in recent versions. I absolutely love hugin. Once you master it it allows you to obtain perfect results. --Dschwen (talk) 19:21, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Daniel,

Could you please take a look at this? I'm not really interested in knowing whose sockpuppet this is or in making any blood. I just want to delete the offending page and stop the harassement for good. Regards, Alvesgaspar (talk) 16:07, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sigh, that guy just writes nonsense. He has no idea what QI means and confuses it with FP. The statistics he seems to pull out of his butt are plain ridiculous, just press the Random file link. Bottom line this is so stupid that leaving the comment on the file talk page would be a punishment for that guy by making him look like a complete fool. Just ignore it would be my advice. Or what should I do about it? --Dschwen (talk) 17:31, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Maybe you are right. Anyway it might be fun to make a quick style and vocabulary analysis on that text and compare it with some names... Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:08, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • Yeah I had the same idea earlier today, triggered by a completely different sockpuppet case. It should be possible to calculate an edit-style feature-vector for every contributor (histogram of added bytes per edit, how many typo corrections, how many new typos(dictionary), amount of punctuation in relation to added text, namespace statistics, upload statistics), or to obtain edit-time correlations between editors, amount of page overlaps in edits (in particular discussion pages) etc. A very interesting project, for which I unfortunately do not have the time :-). --Dschwen (talk) 21:27, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Panoramic viewer

edit

Hello Dschwen, File:Horssen (Druten) Rijksmonument 22640 Roedensestraat 10.JPG had a false cameralocation, I took a new picture, File:Horssen (Druten) Rijksmonument 22640 Roedensestraat 10 (2).JPG and now the correct cameralocation comes. I thought you liked to know this irregularity. Is it from camera failure, is it from my way of camera handling, or is it from your marvelous bot. The false location is nearly that of File:Bergharen (Wijchen) Rijksmonument 9297 Dorpsstraat 10.JPG, taken before. Greetings --Havang(nl) (talk) 14:20, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

DschwenBot: untag not so large ones

edit

--Alexrk2 (talk) 20:14, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
@Alexrk2. Alternatively you could manually add the trick. I currently use this for medium large pano's. Lycaon (talk) 14:26, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

LargeImage tool

edit

Dear dschwen,

Does your tool keeps a kind of cashe when loading an image? I try to view the latest updated image.. but your tools show me the first version of my image, link to the image with your tool: [5].

I tried refreshing my browser.. I also tried to use your tool + image using another browser but the same old version photo appears.

I enjoy a lot your tools (geotagging, LargeImage). Best regards,

Ggia (talk) 00:01, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it does keep a cached version of the image. I haven't come up with a better solution yet, but I'll think about it. I hope I can easily get the modification date of the image on commons, then I could update the cached copy automatically. Let me see what I can do. --Dschwen (talk) 01:30, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

EXIF and artwork

edit

Hi Dschwen,

your bot adds the EXIF data in location template normally under the information template. Very nice and thanka a lot for your work :-)

Could you do the same thing for the artwork template too pls? See this edit from today to see how it looks now. Thanks in advance. Raymond 13:11, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ok, if the bot does not find an Information template it now looks for an Artwork template instead. (there are still case-sensitivity issues I need to sort out though) --Dschwen (talk) 14:15, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Wonderful. Thanks again :) Raymond 14:44, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

GPS-data not to be put by bot

edit

Hello Dschwen, can you order your bot not to put GPS-dates to File:AduC 030 Lameth (A.T.V., comte de, 1760-1829).JPG. This file, taken inside, has the GPS-dates from an earlier picture, far away from that location. And the image itselves has nothing to do with any location. I took care to use the GPS off option for such pictures, forgot this one and may-be one or two more. Greetings. --Havang(nl) (talk) 12:49, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Panoramabetrachter

edit

Apr. 2009). Hi Daniel, could you please tell me what I have done wrong here? It was not me, who promoted File:KyotoTomb.JPG, but somehow it got my signature. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:51, 5 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Somebody must have had Javascript deactvated, and his signature got saved as the literal four tildes. When you edited the page the four tildes were replaced with your signature. Can happen sometimes, signatures on the QIC page only work with a script workaround that I installed a year or two ago. --Dschwen (talk) 14:23, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

--Dschwen (talk) 23:13, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, i noticed you deleted one of my photos, please talk to me if there are any problems. thanks Mdupont (talk) 18:10, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I didn't just delete one, I deleted a whole bunch of them (about 400-500). Please take a look at COM:PS. The images I deleted were so utterly out of scope and unusable that it warranted deletion on the spot. Please realize that you are creating unnecessary work for administrators by mindlessly dumping the contents of your memory card into commons. The burden is on you to select suitable pictures for uploading, and to supply descriptions and categories. --Dschwen (talk) 18:19, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I will put them first on archive.org for selection and the move them to commons when they meet the criteria. aout the PS: ""Where a subject is rare and/or difficult to capture, even a poor quality file may be of significant educational value, especially if Commons has very few or no similar files already."" we have almost no coverage of Kosovo on commons, and we need to start somewhere. We will have to delete photos, I agree. sorry to waste your time, please give me more time to sort these out, I can only do so much per day. Mdupont (talk) 21:59, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't even complaining about the technical quality of the images. The only cases where I deleted images for quality reasons were shots that were essentially duplicates of other shots (shutter pressed twice on the exact same subject). The stuff that remains could be useful if the descriptions were fixed and geotagged. Go ahead, do your thing ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 22:40, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Layoutfrage

Hallo Dschwen!

Was sind denn Monobookscripte? --Dschwen (talk) 23:05, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

South Wharf & Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.jpg

edit

Hi Dschwen, I saw your comments in my QI candidate page. I did sharpen the image in my second uploading, but not fully understand "downsampling" mean here after reading your downsampling page. Do I need a special software to do that? Also I do not think my current Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 has a "denoise" function. Could you let me know your further guideline to improve my image  ? Thanks in advance Donaldytong (talk) 16:40, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

To not downsample your image you do not need a special software. In fact you don't need any software at all ;-). Forget about denoising and sharpening. If you are not using advanced techniques like masking then they will not yield an improvement. --Dschwen (talk) 17:52, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
You should look at improving the process of taking your picture rather than fiddling around with it later. In this particular case I suggest stopping down. Use an aperture of f/8 or higher (f/11). This will improve sharpness of the image. You could also try exposure bracketing (taking a series of images with different exposure times), and the exposure blending (using hugin and enfuse for example - see google). Make sure your tripod is sturdy and use a timer to minimize the vibration from pushing the shutter release. --Dschwen (talk) 17:58, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Dschwen for your advice. Eventually I fully realized why my image is not sharp because of incorrect exposure. It is exactly as your comments said. For example, I should use ISO = 125 or 160, f = 5.6 or 8 or 11 as you suggested and shutter speed should be more than ¼ seconds or even longer to 1 second. I will take another try if I have the chance to go the place there next time. By the way, can I upload a new version of this file and then participate for QI candidate again? Shall I have to upload a different name file (same place and subject) because this   attempt of QI has been declined? My last question is my another QI   candidate was declined. The reason of decline is because of CA and strong halos from sharpening. I think this is most likely in the image post processing by the software. If I take a correction to eliminate CA and halos, can I use the same file, at a corrected version to participate QI candidate again? You might see I am doing my best to make you trouble. Thanks in advance Donaldytong (talk) 09:33, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, just upload over the old version and renominate (you should mention what you fixed since the last nom). --Dschwen (talk) 15:40, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

--Ralf Roletschek (talk) 18:37, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, vorneweg erstmal: Es ist mir voellig wuescht ob dir etwas an "Auszeichnungen" liegt. So.

--Dschwen (talk) 15:33, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

QICbot issue

Please have a look at this - the bot removed a bunch of unprocessed images (line 341). Thanks. Óðinn (talk) 21:23, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not a bot issue. The rules about unassessed images state that they are removed after 8 days of idling. --Dschwen (talk) 21:41, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't have experience doing image restorations. Have you managed to upload it? How did you document the permission to release it under a free license? Has an ORTS mail been sent? --Dschwen (talk) 20:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
It's uploaded and thanks for putting in better version. Yeah, the OTRS should be all squared away. I have done that a few times and gotten pretty tight on my emails to nail it down, and the fellow mailed back a very professional and explicit (quoting the licence) acknowlegement. We are clear there.TCO (talk) 21:01, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
If you think it's artistically worthy and helps project to be a FP, then maybe there is some restorer who you know that can help. Otherwise at least we have the full size. I just can't learn restoration and do the work to do that. It was like rolling a boulder to even upload the image. Sorry, I am just incapacitated and need to ask others for help. It is no big deal if we don't get an award. Just thought it was the sort of thing that people would love.TCO (talk) 21:01, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reply
Meine eigene Category:Quality images by Taxiarchos228.
PAGESINCAT kannst Du natuerlich in jedem Fall nutzen. --Dschwen (talk) 16:25, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

[12]. Vielleicht magst du dich dazu dort äußern. Grüße --Wladyslaw (talk) 20:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Konntest du schon nachschauen, ob du diesen "Schleier" weg kriegen konntest?

--Dschwen (talk) 17:56, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

QICbot

edit

Hi, I understand you are the person who takes care of QICbot. I have two things I would like to discuss with you and I am aware someone surely already asked you before bu I'll try. First, could the bot sign or stamp the date of promotion on discussion pages when it signals a promotion? This way it would be easyer to know when images were promoted. Secondly, could the bot add promoted images in the category Quality images by User automaticaly if it exists. This way the model counting quality images on people's page would be updated easily. Thanks a lot, Letartean (talk) 17:23, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I could make it sign contributions (isn't that a little uncommon for bots though?). No to your second question. until the Quality images by User categories is cleaned up that would be an impossible task. Let me rephrase it. The categories are a F**ing mess right now. There is no naming standard. This is just awful, we have:
Do you see the pattern? Right, there is none!!!!!!!!! I will not touch this stinking pile of crap until we finally settle on a standard and get it cleaned up. --Dschwen (talk) 18:04, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your answer. Well for the first point, it could only be to put the date in title of the created section like ==Quality image promotion for date== because you ar right that a signing bot would be weird. For the second question, I'll say I'm not familliar with bot programming but couldn't you impose the category naming by doing the following:
1) add a if command to the bot like if category exists then add image to that category.
2) State clearly on the bot's page that it will only do it if the category has the form you've chosen.
This way, people would have to change their category name by their self and the bot would do it only if the category has a name pattern that you can predict. It's just a suggestion but I feel like a bot when I go and add my pictures to the category by myself... Thanks for your help and continue your good work! Letartean (talk) 18:17, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I would choose the format Quality images by User:Username. Ok, let me think about it. I'm pretty busy IRL right now. --Dschwen (talk) 20:44, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

VIC - Fehler

edit

Habs erstmal deaktiviert. --Dschwen (talk) 22:30, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Jawohl, dankeschön. -- Felix König 11:10, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dschwen, There is still an issue with the VIC nomination templates I fear. The code generated when pushing the button "Create new image nomination" seems incomplete; it gives "<includeonly>{{VIC-thumb</includeonly> |subpage=|image=", and the page can't be properly displayed. Here is an example. However, the VIC appears correct on Commons:Valued image candidates when added to the list, but it its no more the case when one tries to edit it in order to review it. Missing code :
<noinclude>=== File:filename.jpg === {{VIC
example. Would you have an idea to fix the issue? --Myrabella (talk) 16:41, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I think I fixed it. Took me a little while to remember what we were doing there (intentionally breaking tags that heal themselves after one parser iteration... freaky stuff). --Dschwen (talk) 17:13, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Almost :-) Now there is "VIC-nom-preload" written instead of the filename on the VIC nomination page, see this new example. --Myrabella (talk) 17:31, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks, I missed that. Fixed now. --Dschwen (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
All fine now. Thank you very muck. --Myrabella (talk) 18:15, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

sorry to bother so many people at same time, but what do you think about reverting Tomas' changes on FPC and block page from being writed, while we settle the rules of 50 edits thing ? We can't afford to have rules changing forth and back every 12 hours.

protect FPC? All the edit links are gone making it much more difficult for contributors to cast a vote. W.S. 13:37, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

One single editor has been edit warring about the FPC rules. Hm, I made sure not to cascade protect. A pity the edit links still don't show up for non-admins. unblocked the page. --Dschwen (talk) 14:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

String comparison

edit

Hi Dschwen, Regarding this edit. I'm well aware of the ugliness of string comparsion in defined checking. However I did not / do not know whether this particular variable is globally available by being attached to the window object. Reason being the "var" statement for the QIVoter object (which may or may not be globally available either, depending on whether or not it's loaded as a seperate request without a wrappper function). When resources are combined the global namespace can not be assummed (imho it should never be assumed, but especially with the resourceloader). A variable should either be defined local with the var statement or global by attaching it to the window object. Right now both QIvoter and QInominator are defined local, so checking in window seems wrong to me. Right now the script is loaded raw as a seperate request so it will work fine, but I'd recommend defining it globally rather than assuming it is.

Anyway, thanks for the quick responding and even more thanks for the scripts themselfs are they're very nice! The detection of cursor position and toolserver api request is nice as well. –Krinkletalk 18:56, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hm, good food for thought! I did not take the possibility of scope being wrapped in a function by the resource loader into account (that's what it would have to be, right?). I guess I should explicitly attach the objects to the window object in that case. --Dschwen (talk) 19:53, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Da wuerde ich als erstes mal nachsehen. --Dschwen (talk) 17:43, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

TCMI Image updates

edit

Hi Daniel
You've likely noticed that I did a bit of updating on your TCMI images. Tris got me a good bit of information and I was also trying out the Artwork template and Institution template that I'll be using for the uploads beginning this week. The Artwork template was suggested by Jean-Fred and it includes a great many fields that are useful for the type of data I have for each image. If I messed anything up on any of your image pages, feel free to let me know.
You'll notice that I have new filename suggestions at the top of a few of the pages. These were decided on by the curators and mirror what I'll be using for the images coming directly from the museum. I don't know how to move the file, so thought I'd leave that to you.
One other question - did you happen to get a good image of the glass sculpture, "Fireworks of Glass" on your visit? I need a personal photo with express permission from the photographer in order to upload one as fair-use in Wikipedia for the new w:Fireworks of Glass article. I thought you'd be an easy enough person to ask. (When it comes to the tagging and copyright of fair-use, I've done that a good many times through w:WP:Public art, so you needn't worry about me uploading it in some inappropriate way. Thanks so much! HstryQT (talk) 20:11, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. As for the "Fireworks of Glass", I did not even bother taking a single picture of it. Didn't think of fair use. --Dschwen (talk) 20:44, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Laling fort coordinates on Wikiminiatlas

edit

Hello,

Could you please have a look at the wikiminiatlas on the right hand side of this geohack page, displaying en:Laling fort on the Chad-Libya border, North of Lake Yoa, in Africa, although this fort is supposed to be located in India. To see the problem, you need to zoom out by clicking "-" once for viewing the Chad-Libya border together with Lake Yoa. Alternatively, you may use this link. I can't see anything wrong on the coodinate template at en:Laling fort, so I am afraid this is a bug of wikiminiatlas, or a bug in the toolserver's database refresh. Teofilo (talk) 17:36, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The coordinate database is not in sync. I had some problems on the toolserver. Let me take a look... --Dschwen (talk) 18:08, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Geolocation of Image:Igrise - spomenik IMG 6210.jpg

edit

Hello, Dschwen! There seems to be a problem with GPS tag of Image:Igrise - spomenik IMG 6210.jpg - namely, the bot didn't recognize that it has GPS information, although it was tagged with "GPS EXIF". I can always add GPS information by hand, but anyway, would you happen to know the reason for the failed attempt? --romanm (talk) 17:00, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for notifying me of that problem. I rely on user feedback like yours to keep the bot operating smoothly. I found a small bug that was triggered on a rare occasion (redirect page for a GPS tagged image). The bug is fixed and your image is now tagged. --Dschwen (talk) 22:07, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Thank you for fixing it! --romanm (talk) 07:00, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Belated robotags

edit

I was thinking of complaining that many of my pictures uploaded this week had not been geotagged despite having EXIF coordinates, thus making me retag them online. Now I see that ten of those have received hidden suggested locations from the bot. Better late than never; should I thank you for repairing something or was it merely a mysterious glitch? Jim.henderson (talk) 21:56, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, see the complaint above. The bot ran into an image redirect, which it could not properly handle yet. I thought i fixed that issue, but it was for another bot. So anyhow, now the bot can finish his runs. I might have to re-run it manually for images a few more days back, but other than that it should work now. --Dschwen (talk) 22:04, 24 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah. I was reluctant to complain, fearing that my slapdash EXIF coding methods were at fault. The better of my cameras seldom actually writes a geotag in the city, and the other often writes inaccurate ones, and I use two different programs to write rough tags where none exist and refine the rough ones, and the whole messy system goes wrong often. So, it was just a matter of the bot getting stuck on a bad picture file without a statistical alarm to say, "Alert! Today we only wrote 200 instead of the usual 500 geotags!" or whatever. Anyway it's always pleasant when a glitch turns out to be not my fault, but it would have been fixed quicker if I had the courage to speak up. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:31, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Softwarehilfe erhofft

edit

Hallo Dschwen!

Hello Dschwen,

While looking for a nice image of the Lorenz attractor, I found your Lorenz_attractor.svg.

I would like to use it for the cover of the program for a conference of the California Mathematics Council.

Is this acceptable? Also, would you be willing to send me a higher resolution file of the image?

Best regards,

Sure, feel free to use it. The Image is in SVG format. This is already maximum print quality (vectorial rather than pixel based). --Dschwen (talk) 00:52, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

QIBot-Problem

edit

Hi,

Kannst Du mal schauen, was los ist?

--Wladyslaw (talk) 14:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Welchen Browser benutzt Du denn? --Dschwen (talk) 14:45, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

--Dschwen (talk) 22:26, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Geocoded media count

Hi Dschwen; I tried to add content to the 10 M press release.[16] It seems inconsistent with the numbers that you and Para quote at Commons_talk:Geocoding/Archive_3#Milestone. What am I doing wrong? Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 02:43, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

What is the inconsistency? I have been reworking my extraction process, I could give you an updated count later today. My last number is from July'10: 643480 images with camera location. --Dschwen (talk) 12:04, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Is the number produced by your extraction process defined in a different manner from the 2,292,615 quoted by Category:Media_with_locations? Is one more accurate than the other? Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 14:55, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'm only counting camera locations and my number is 8 months old. Cannot recount right now as I'm transitioning my extraction process and have little to no time to work on it right now. I thought the old way would still work to give you an up to date estimate, but it didn't, sorry. --Dschwen (talk) 17:03, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Most of my uploads have gotten their bot geotag but File:HMS Gloucester D96 Manhattan Terminal jeh.jpg and three 187th Street pictures uploaded earlier that evening did not. Not a problem, since I tagged them online (except where roundels are already dense on the map) but thought you might want to know. Jim.henderson (talk) 11:33, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:2002-issue Euro cent obverse.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

VICbot missing vlosed VI's

edit

Hi. It looks as though VICbot is having troubles with two nominations over at VI candidates. Both "Nomocharis pardanthina, RBGE 2010, 2.jpg" and "Helichrysum ecklonis, RBGE 2010.jpg" were closed before some nominations which has since been dealt with by VICbot so I'm guessing there is some formatting to which the bot is sensitive. /Lokal_Profil 13:06, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fixed by George Chernilevsky. Seems to be linked to the fact that --~~~~ gives a plain username link on e.g. the QI page but the normal signature (which in my case includes links to contributions and talk page) on the VI pages... which in turn stops the bot. /Lokal_Profil 13:12, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Apologies

edit

I was copying some of my old pre-digital photographs with my iphone - and the bot has located the photos that I copied - from the iphone location - which has no relation whatsoever to the images - I will remember to turn off location when copying my old photos in future ... sigh SatuSuro (talk) 14:32, 28 April 2011 (UTC) IS there anyway I can stop the bot coming back to the images? SatuSuro (talk) 14:35, 28 April 2011 (UTC) OR do I need to delete, and re-photograph my originals from a camera that has no location/exif date loaded? SatuSuro (talk) 14:57, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The bot should not come back after it has visited the image once. If it does that would be a bug. Do you have an example? --Dschwen (talk) 16:23, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
If that is the case I will simply remove the incorrect exif material - thank you for your reply - cheers SatuSuro 23:44, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bilder in <gallery> automatisch nummerieren?

edit

--Ralf Roletschek (talk) 18:39, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Verstehst du, was ich meine? --Ralf Roletschek (talk) 09:07, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Script

You maintain a script to randomize galleries. Please take a look at this thread and help. Thanks, theMONO 03:43, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fixed, I rewrote the shuffling routine. --Dschwen 05:10, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I know you're busy but till next year you can think about the following problem: A user complained that when he returned in R1, the images were arranged in a new order. Therefore it would be nice to have a routine that shuffles the files dependent on wgUserName or saves the order in cookie. Lots of "random generators" accept arguments but not JavaScript.Math's one.
BTW do you have an idea how to ease the voting system next year. MediaWiki seems not the best platform for these purposes.

Bot stopped?

I noticed that none of the pictures I uploaded on April 30, May 1 and May 2 have been geotagged despite having EXIF tags. Has the bot quit working? Jim.henderson (talk) 21:32, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

It operated during the remainder of May but not today or yesterday. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:31, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, this is due to a software update on the toolserver. A crucial library my bot needs will only be available tomorrow. Nothing I can do about that. --Dschwen (talk) 21:03, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I hope it can be repaired soon. It is sorely missed. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:17, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:2002-issue Euro cent obverse.jpg

edit

Hi Dschwen. I've collected a number of links regarding this issue at User:Hammersoft/coins. In short, there's no blanket free license that applies to Euro coins. To banknotes, there is. The Money-EU covers that, but it is inappropriate for coins. Please see the various discussions linked from my user subpage above. If you're aware of a definitive statement that this coin is in fact free of copyright, I'd be happy to hear it. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:29, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

As I said, you're welcome to open up a regular DR on this. A speedy tag has been removed from the image before, and the discussions I'm aware of are not clear cut. But if you are so sure you won't have any problems making a convincing argument at the deletion request. --Dschwen (talk) 03:28, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looking at COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION on copyright protection of the common face design of the euro coins I have to conclude that your position is without any merit. Photographic reproduction is permitted. End of story. Before you start a big stink about "ways which do not damage or detract from the image of the euro", this image does not. Potential derivatives do not impact the legality of this image, just like potentially libelous edits do not impact the licensing status of portraits. --Dschwen (talk) 03:37, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Recent panos

edit

Hey Dschwen (or should I call you Mr. Schwen, Dan, or Daniel?). Just wondering, you seem to have a mastery for stitching and Hugin so would you mind taking a look at my two recent panos (File:Cultus Lake Waterpark panorama.jpg and File:Harrison Lake pano.jpg) and tell what I did right, what I did wrong and give me any tips for my next project? Thanks in advance, --The High Fin Sperm Whale 22:45, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dr. Schwen please! No, just kidding, whatever floats your boat. Give me about a week, I'm currently very busy IRL. It'll be better after friday. --Dschwen (talk) 14:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to intrude! Here is my quick assessement: Pic 1 (Cultus lake) has a nice composition but quality is on the poor side. It is too soft and the geometry in some parts looks weird. For example, vertical lines are not always vertical and the kids standing at left seem stretched. Pic 2 is worse. Colors are washed out by poor lighting conditions and there is at least an obvious stitching error: the line separarating the sea from the land, to the right of the white boat. There is another suspicious discontinuity near the centre but I'm not sure it is an error. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:16, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
As for the Cultus one, everything seemed odd in the photo but I couldn't tell what it was and was therefore not able to fix it. I think it is because of barrel distortion. As for number 2, it was rather hazy and I can't really help washed out colours. And as for that stitching error, I don't think it is an error but a rock formation. Hard to tell with something so small. And the other error is a rock formation as well. Echo island has a lot of cliffs and rocks jutting out, so at first I was confused when my photo did not have a straight waterline. Well, thank you for your input, as you can tell I'm still very much an amateur at this.   --The High Fin Sperm Whale 16:23, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I submitted both to COM:PC if you're interested. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 00:57, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Geo-extraction tool?

edit

Hi, I have been greatly interested in using geotagged data from the commons database dumps, and came across your page. I see you have text which states "Sourcecode for geo-data extration from commons database dumps and readily extracted location data files can be found on my toolserver page", but unfortunately, the link is broken, and when I find your account on the toolserver page, I can't find links to these tools and data files. Are they still available?

Many thanks! -Alan

Hey Alan, my geodata extraction script is outdated. I get my coordinate data from en:User:Dispenser who performs the extractions and maintains a database with coordinates on the Wikimedia Toolserver. What are you thinking of doing with the data? --Dschwen (talk) 20:35, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Daniel, thanks for the information -- looks like what I'm looking for! I'm hoping to perform a basic spatial join to locate photos within a set distance of certain points of interest, and this looks like it should fit the bill. Many thanks!
I'm pretty sure that has already been done by User:Para. Look him up, he used to be very active and wrote a few applications to do this and similar things (all pictures facing a common location etc.). However his scripts are not easy to find. --Dschwen (talk) 15:28, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

LargeImage

edit

Hi Dschwen,

Ages ago, didn't you tag a series of images with LargeImage ? You might want to do another run on images uploaded since.

You probably already excluded images with Pano360, even if, e.g. this has both (added manually). --  Docu  at 18:12, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I added it to Commons:Bots/Work_requests#.7B.7BLargeImage.7D.7D. --  Docu  at 05:17, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Bot is running. --Dschwen (talk) 21:26, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Don't you think it is useful here? Is there really the need to remove?...
Maybe we should include a link to these viewers into the standard links under each image - automatically added by javascript if a certain size (px or MB) is exceeded. These viewers are just plain useful - not really the warning (talking of the flag image). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:25, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
There is a gadget for that. --Dschwen (talk) 01:31, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I dont think that the removing is a good idea. It is very usfull in maps ect. were the small details importent. Can you revert the removing? Geagea (talk) 02:51, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Which removing are you talking about? If you want to look at small details then click on "Full resolution". Small images should not be tagged with LargeImage. --Dschwen (talk) 03:19, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please, Dschwen.... "a gadget" - think of our readers / visitors. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:11, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'd be happy to push for making this a default feature. --Dschwen (talk) 03:19, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'd support that. Especially after reading statistics on gadgets (Commons:Village_pump#User_preferences). BTW, thanks for doing a bot run. --  Docu  at 08:29, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I would support enabling the gadget by default if the gadget is improved more. I made a comment ad MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-ZoomViewer.js#does_not_work_currently.3F_.2Bchanged_appearance_in_test_code. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 22:06, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I also think, that the border for removing LargeImage was set up incorrectly. I started more frequently adding this template while using older browser on enterprise computer (and was not able to display full resolutoin) and now your bot removed some of them. For example this 17.6 MB map can cause trouble to older browser or computers. --Jklamo (talk) 19:24, 26 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sure, there will always be some person with a really old beater who will think that the limit is set too high. But that is pretty much irrelevant. It would be quite ridiculous to post this warning template on images if it only applies a fraction of a percent of our users. The better approach is to reevaluate the limit constantly and keep raising it, dropping computer systems older than about 10 years. The image you link to is a barely 17 Megapixels large (the file size of 17.68 is completely irrelevant). Most current consumer digital cameras out put images larger than this. Wouldn't it be quite the joke to tag every image upload from a current camera as Large, dangerous and potentially crashing your computer? --Dschwen (talk) 00:00, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
BTW, Category:Large images notes a size of 2000px as limit. Incidentally, the bot removed it from the image that prompted me to start this thread ( Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2011/06#Downloading a map ). --  Docu  at 03:25, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ziemlich daneben:

1)
Bonn statt Siegburg
Foto:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2011-07-01_Siegburg_Blutspendemobil.JPG?uselang=de

falsche Koordinate (Bonn-Beuel):

http://maps.google.de/maps?ll=50.745833,7.116667&spn=0.01,0.01&t=m&q=50.745833,7.116667

50.793833°, 7.2025°

2)
Lahti statt Grenze FIN/RUS
Foto:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arctic_Cat_ATV_Finnish_Border_Guard_20100918.jpg

falsche Koordinate (Lahti):

60° 57′ 1.2″ N, 25° 38′ 54.6″ E

richtig wäre (nahe Virolahti):

60° 36' 22.71" N 27° 51' 13.36" E

Gut getroffen:

Besten Dank im Voraus und Gruß über den Teich! --Sir James (talk) 09:07, 6 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hallo!
Date/Time Original              : 2011:07:01 17:42:54
GPS Time Stamp                  : 17:11:05

Gruß --Sir James (talk) 15:55, 27 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

The bot removes LargeImage-template on large images

edit

The bot removes the LargeImage-template on a lot of pictures, i.E. on File:Panorama_Gelsdorf.jpg (21.281 × 1.024 Pixel). I think 21.281 × 1.024 Pixel is large and probably it is a bug. Same on File:Apfelbaumplantage_bei_Gelsdorf.jpg (8.216 × 2.887 Pixel) which is a large image in my opinion. --Slick (talk) 06:18, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I guess it's the file size that matters, not the number of pixels. 6.75 MB is not actually large. -- H005 10:54, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, pixel size matters, and the template page clearly states that 50MP is the threshold. Every el cheapo digital camera outputs 10-16MP nowadays. Labeling 20MP as dangerously large is nonsense in my opinion. Please face the fact that computers are evolving over time and say goodbye to your outdated standards of what constitutes an unusually large image. --Dschwen (talk) 19:06, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

edit

Thank you. In recent days I have been wondering whether the bot looked at such requests at all, or tried and failed, or what? Now I've got an error message which gives small hope of understanding the problem. It says it tried and failed. Obviously a more detailed failure report would be better, but it's pleasant to know something is being done and if failure messages become numerous they might help me analyze and find what, if anything, I'm doing wrong at my end. Geocoding problem?

Let me know if the issue persists. The toolserver database was lagging behind the commons database causing the bot to skip lots of images. --Dschwen (talk) 01:08, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Blacklisting images from DschwenBot EXIF analyzer?

edit

An image that I recently uploaded via Flickruploadbot (File:Fitchburg Line at Walden Pond.jpg) has been geotagged by DschwenBot, which would normally be really really cool. However, there's something wrong with the EXIF data from Flickr - it locates the image about 100 meters from the train tracks, when it is clearly on the tracks. Is there any way to tell the bot not to geotag an image? (It's nothing wrong with the bot; it's just easier to work with it than to modify metadata.)

Feel free to respond here; I'll watch your talk page.

Cheers! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:06, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

You could download the image, remove the wrong EXIF data fields and upload it over the current one. However, even better is tagging it with the correct location, which I have just done. (May be a few meters off, but that doesn't matter very much.) -- H005 16:07, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yep, what H005 said. The bot will not overwrite an existing tag. So why not just add the Location template yourself if you already go through the trouble of verifying the coordinates? --Dschwen (talk) 16:51, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay. In this case, I wasn't sure exactly where it was; I couldn't spot that little shack on Bing Maps. I knew the listed coords were wrong, but I couldn't place it any more accurately than 100 meters of tracks. I normally don't geotag unless I took the picture or I can absolutely verify the location. Thanks, though, now I know. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:52, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dschwenbot: Location aus exif unterbinden?

edit

Hallo Dschwen,

Location neu reinsetzten. Danke, --El Grafo (talk) 08:26, 23 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Atari 1200XL

edit

Hi,

Thanks for the high-quality image of the Atari 1200XL! The only 1200XL image on commons previously had been... nothing special (to be polite :-)) and I'd been looking for a half-decent one under a compatible license a while back, without success.

I've made a "cutout" version isolating the computer itself (Atari 1200XL.jpg) for use in articles. Hope this is okay with you. I notice you had it tagged (via a hidden category) as needing processing, but it was a lot better than most peoples' images to start off with.

All the best,

Location from EXIF data

edit

Please, do not create Location from EXIF data for File:D-5585 at EFRY 20090629 01.jpg, File:OH-693 at EFRY 20090629 01.jpg or File:OO-ZBR at EFRY 20090629 01.jpg. The pictures were taken at Räyskälä Airfield but their EXIF location data points to central Helsinki, dozens of kilometres from Räyskälä. ––Apalsola tc 21:23, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

So fix it. Put in the correct location and the bot will not touch the files. Or wait a few days an take out the broken location. What do you expect me to do? Everytime somebody uploads a picture with shitty geodata I should programm add exception into the bot? --Dschwen (talk) 19:00, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Daniel, your bot could maybe check whether it is in the page-revision table? If yes, don't add again. Example for the main-page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Main%20Page&rvprop=user&rvlimit=50
I don't know which format bots like most but API output is available in likely all common used ones. When you have time, you may think about it. Sincerely -- RE rillke questions? 21:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I already keep a local table of files that were already processed by the bot. Now that I think about it I don't know why the bot would ever visit the same file twice. Guess I'll have to investigate... --Dschwen (talk) 22:07, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I removed the GPS EXIF data from the images. (I don't know the exact location they were taken, so maybe it's better just to remove the GPS tags.) And, yes, I think the bot should skip files it already has processed. Bots are useful for certain tasks (and I fully support geocoding) but bots shouldn't override well-founded edits or reverts by human users. Maybe we could also have a template such as Nogeocoding or Fixcoordinates for tagging files with incorrect EXIF GPS tags. Best regards, ––Apalsola tc 23:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please stop your bot from adding nonsense location data to File:Alt Hastedter Kirche, Bremen, Germany - 20110905.jpg and similar files. No doubt the file contains the nonsense, but it has now three times added lat and long of 720. There is already a probably correct Object location dec template on the files, so further Location is unnecessary. Thanks. Finavon (talk) 17:59, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
The Location template is the preferred geocoding template. So, having a Object location dec does not make Location unnecessary. --Dschwen (talk) 20:53, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I have modified the way the bot works now. Unless a GPS EXIF template is on the image page the bot will only visit an image if it hadn't visited it before. I also added a nonsense check to latitude (has to be between -90 and 90), but not for longitude yet (probably between -180 and 360 would cover most cases). --Dschwen (talk) 21:13, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Location Extraktionsproblem?

edit

--Dschwen (talk) 21:59, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Adding EXIF-date as well?

edit

Was meinst du dazu? --Flominator (talk) 11:43, 9 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Coordinates

edit

Hi. I think, coordinates are useful in case of landscapes or cityscapes, buildings, nature (including details of animals or plants), architectonic details, events etc. However, in this case, coordinates are useless and missleading. I think, the extraction of coordinates from EXIF data by bot needs intelligent supervision. --ŠJů (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to intelligently supervise it. --Dschwen (talk) 22:34, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

VICbot ignores some candidates

edit

Hi Daniel. I hope you are well. VICbot is currently ignoring a batch of promoted candidates, and I don't really know why. Since some of them are pretty old, I tried to make the bot look for candidates on a broader time span, but it didn't help, or I did it wrong. If you had the time to look at it (and to tell me what you did), it would be great. I have a lot of stuff on my qicvic TODO-list (to improve robustness and to add wanted features), but I'm really too busy IRL for the moment... BTW, do you still use SVN when you modify the code of the bots? Best regards, --14:46, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Did you see this discussion? Commons talk:Quality images#Review the categories Could you please come by and give your opinion? It would be good if you explain what are the necessary steps for adding more categories. Yann (talk) 17:50, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

extract EXIF/IPTC from png, too

edit

Hello Daniel,
it would be nice to have DschwenBot extracting Metadata from png-files, too. Explicitly I am missing the coordinates.
Compare this png file with this jpg file containing identical metadata.
Best regards -- Malenki (talk) 10:01, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Let me be blunt here (please do not take this personal, but you happen to have hit a pet peeve of mine): PNG is not an appropriate format for uploading photos. If you are concerned about quality please simply upload JPG at a higher resolution. The fraction of PNG files that is abused for photos is fortunately very small on commons. Thus adding PNG support to the bot does not seem like a good use of my spare time. --Dschwen (talk) 19:54, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't see sense in clipping a jpg and saving the result as jpg again. -- Malenki (talk) 20:01, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
You do know that you can crop JPG images losslessly, do you? --Dschwen (talk) 03:57, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Not up to now. Could you recommend an ergonomic to use tool for linux, please? -- Malenki (talk) 19:19, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Try this http://emergent.unpythonic.net/01235516977 --Dschwen (talk) 05:40, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. -- Malenki (talk) 15:20, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
btw: this tool removes all EXIF data. It seems the author hit the same ugly behaviour of jpegtran to drop all EXIF data if one doesn't really tell the program to keep it.
bugfix: replace in cropgui.py
task.add(['nice', 'jpegtran', '-crop', cropspec, image_name], target)
with
task.add(['nice', 'jpegtran', '-copy', 'all', '-crop', cropspec, image_name], target)
(author of the program is informed)

That's neat! :-) --Dschwen (talk) 19:28, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

VICbot

edit

Hello,

It seems that the bot is not working for 19 days. Could you have a look please. The Commons:Valued image candidates/candidate list is filled up with promoted images waiting to be processed. Thanks for your help, Yann (talk) 18:14, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok, found and fixed the bug. I might do a manual run to process the remaining old candidates though. Let me know. --Dschwen (talk) 23:21, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
--Wladyslaw (talk) 09:35, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
There are still many stuck nominations. Could you have a look please? Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:46, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The QIbot deadlocked today too. --Wladyslaw (talk) 14:57, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
2. nicht vollständig ausgeführter Botlauf innert weniger Tage. --Wladyslaw (talk) 12:23, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
--Wladyslaw (talk) 15:22, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

VIC bot dies due to a database error. A table apparently just disappeared from the toolserver db copy. This is just a f***ed up mess and I am starting to get a little tired of it. --Dschwen (talk) 15:01, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the removal of promoted images, is it possible for the bot to remove the oldest images first, rather than removing the newer ones? There are images that had been promoted more than a month ago.--Jetstreamer (talk) 10:38, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The bot simply does not see the old candidates. I have not yet figured out why that is. But there is no built-in preference to promote newer candidates first. --Dschwen (talk) 19:19, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

200+

Slaungers two talk page rules:

  1. When a user has more than 100 sections on his talk page it is time to archive.
  2. When a user has more than 200 sections on his talk page, archiving is overdue  .
