File:JvmKBDB13769 04 Statens Järnvägar, SJ K.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Category names
editPlease note that we have lots of category names for buildings and other objects in their native names Brösarps kyrka or Skærbæk Kirke. These categories are not meant to be in English. Only their parent categories, such as Category:Churches in the Diocese of Lund are meant to be in English. Hjart (talk) 04:21, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- It is not something that I care massively about, but I fail to see how that is supported by the category policy, and it does seem rather user-unfriendly on a site with users from all over the world. Do you also think that, say, Category:Ueno Station Building (1932) should be named in Japanese? ACo2c (talk) 07:04, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- I would not have much of a problem with japanese building categories being named in Japanese. In my experience using native names of individual buildings etc. for their categories actually simplifies things quite a lot, because most photographers are actually locals, who often doesn't have much of an idea what the object may be called in english. Also tourists from neighbouring countries can't actually be expected to be much more familiar with the English language than the local.
- Please see i.e. Category:Luther churches in Schleswig-Holstein. Notably the Germans consistently name individual church categories etc. by their native names, probably because that actually considerably simplifies maintainance of those categories for them. Far from all germans (including category maintainers) are all that familiar with the English language. Hjart (talk) 08:44, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Churches of course have proper names, and should therefore be untranslated according to the current policy, just like named roads and bridges etc. "Brösarps stationshus" on the other hand is hardly a proper name, only a description. But perhaps I misunderstood your original post, and this distinction is precisely what you meant to point out? ACo2c (talk) 10:54, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
