Lal Dighi Lake, Kolkata, India
I like how they stay in the shadows, giving a sense of calm. The ones on the right seem to be slightly lit. The feeling of ‘awkwardness’ may come from a mix of humidity, the break between afternoon showers, and chronic air pollution in Kolkata. There is a hint of tension in the sky, but for me the net effect is positive, i.e. not uneasy, but kind of contemplative. --Argenberg (talk) 17:40, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose I agree with your introduction, Argenberg, pleasent, good compo,...but not extraordinary. I will only support for FP if at least one of these fields is extraordinary (and the others at least very good): the subject/compo, the lighting, the detail. And in this case unfortunately I cannot see any of those areas in the extraordinary area Poco a poco (talk) 11:32, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I take your point. Your explanation sounds reasonable. For me, these two buildings, one from the late 19th century, the other from the middle 20th century, the way they stand and face each other on the lake in a tropical setting, is a little sensational or slightly extraordinary. Now I understand it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. No problem. --Argenberg (talk) 18:18, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Again... --Cart (talk) 12:45, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, no… the Wilfredor's nomination is just a silent protest again his departure. Consider the below one as his nomination. 13:42, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but you can't make nominations in someone else's name. It doesn't work that way. And Wilfredor is not departing. He is just getting his life back on track so that he can continue here stronger than ever. People need to do that sometimes. Also, that nom is in a terrible shape; I will fix it up for you so you have a chance for many supports. --Cart (talk) 14:11, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, ok. I got it. #staystrong. @W.carter and Arne Müseler: Could you take over this one instead? I wouldn't want to see the Christ's photo being discarded. 14:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry no, you have to ask someone else. I only do maintenance. Also small tip: If you want to 'ping' someone, you must mention them during the same edit as you write your signature, otherwise the 'ping' doesn't work. Here the 'ping' didn't get to the users since you added the {{ping|W.carter|Arne Müseler}} in the edit after you signed your post. --Cart (talk) 15:00, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Girl of the Mundari tribe posing with a Watusi cow in a cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan
As far as I understood it, it would be right to assume that the breed is a mix o both, Ankole and Watusi, so I updated it. Sanga is a wider term that includes both and would be more generic. Poco a poco (talk) 21:12, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yann: I uploaded a new version with a bit more of crop on both sides. Regarding the breed of cow, please, give me more time to investigate it, I was told they were all Watusi cows. •  Support At first, I thought that the half-cut car and the pole in the middle make an odd composition. But the two poles give a sense of depth, and with the car and the running woman, they emphasis the on-going disaster. -- Yann (talk) 07:36, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Interesting shot. My comment is mainly about the restoration, which seems only part done. Blending the large semicircle pattern seems to make it into the source of light -- is it, though? There's still a strip of that pattern along the top-left, some splotches throughout, and maybe light smudging from the cleanup. I do not envy you the task, though -- restoring an image with so much noise (or "noise" given it's a dust storm) would be challenging. — Rhododendrites talk11:46, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mitzi Akaha at the 40th Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah
She is an actress appearing for the film Chaperon, in which she plays one of the leading roles, at a film festival. Actors and actresses use their whole body and their body-language as tools, they are not just "pretty faces". I don't see why a photo like this could not be in an infobox. On the other hand, it is not necessary for an FP to be the lead photo in an article. Most wikis use rather unflattering passport-style photos for that. Artistic photos of actors and singers can be used in articles, like this Valued image of Cohen (at least until he died and the en-wiki article went passport again).
I've taken the liberty to update the info on the file page; most people (and search Bots!) don't read or follow the categories the photo is in, so it is good to have as much info as possible in the description slot. --Cart (talk) 12:26, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • For me, this image is much beter. On en.Wiki, yes, they will cut her to mugshot, because... I told them sometime that is not good. But they keep scissors sharp. Frankie, isnt that photo beter ?! Just clean some dust on her, for me thats FP. --Mile (talk) 14:28, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She is probably doing her best for the cameraman in that photo, but for me, I had hoped that wiki portraits of women had evolved beyond that 50's pin-up-gesture with a woman holding her hands over/on her head, while giving the man behind the lens a sultry look. That gesture might be ok for actresses like Marilyn Monroe or Dita Von Teese who have made 'sexy' their trademark, but not otherwise. Try the same gesture with a man and see what you think of it. --Cart (talk) 14:57, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pic is good, just to make some more edits. You can send me original, CA is still strong and "blownout" can be corected. I would even crop it a bit above, church become biger. --Mile (talk) 09:17, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the offer! Where is the CA? Can you add a note? I'm not sure about a crop. I like the portrait orientation for narrow streets like this and wouldn't want to trim more off the sides to match a top crop. — Rhododendrites talk18:17, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Annoted. p.S. Crop would make, to strat from shadow to sun, now is sun-shadow-sun and church would be biger (would crop above too). Try as alternative. --Mile (talk) 06:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. Regarding CA, I don't see any serious CA in those areas? The strange thing is there was CA around there in the previous version of the page. Is it possible you have a cached version? I like your idea of cropping from dark-to-light, but when I tried to do so it required cutting off too much of the left to make it work for me. — Rhododendrites talk21:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • To be honest, I had expected improvements in the original picture, not a different one, but as they are pretty similar I have no problem with that. The noise level is good in the current version and I also prefer the POV/angle in this version. The halo is overcorrected so that you can see a grey halo around the statue but in the inner side with no saturation. I also agree with the lighting comments. I prefered the lighting of the original version and the WB too. I'd weak support if you fix the halo and brigthen it a bit Poco a poco (talk) 19:52, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Diego! Yeah I think I added too much WB change of color trying to avoid the red halo. Maybe the next time! :) ProtoplasmaKid (talk) 16:12, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted Giles Laurent, Riad Salih you must {{Withdraw}} one of your nomination since only two active are allowed. Otherwise the latest (this one) will be {{FPD}}-ed. Best, --Cart (talk) 10:29, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I didn't have any active nominations and don't feel motivated to search for new images at the moment, so I may as well take it over. It saves Riad from having to withdraw this image, too (which would suck if they did). --SHB2000 (talk) 12:03, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Casio W-96H-4A2V wristwatch
  • Yann thats is why i choose it. Its sporty watch, you cant place it on back of some expencive clock. Back was especially choosen for this. --Mile (talk) 08:08, 6 May 2024 (UTC) p.S. You even nominate botom portrait where black enter black face, that didnt bother you ?[reply]
Since it is a sports watch, why didn't you place it on some background that is associated with sports or even outdoors and not 'expensive-looking', like a rock, in front of water ("water 50m resist"), on sand, or perhaps AstroTurf/grass that would have set off the orange so well rather than trying to match it. I think even the fabric of a sports bag would have been better. Keeping the watch in context would make a great photo. --Cart (talk) 11:51, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Green on orange, are you sure Cart ? I dont think its good idea. For "water" (all Casio are water resistant) but using water as back i would use other model for diving (Frogman). Rock, could be, but i would apply it at G-Shock series - strong structure and stonger material. However sand might be, but i am looking for similar on other clock. --Mile (talk) 15:50, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think green and orange are two vibrant colors that go great together. I always think of those colors as colors for stadiums where sports events take place. And there are a lot of other options for sports backgrounds, just use your imagination (or a Google search for ideas). Perhaps look at all the tricks people who do product photos do. --Cart (talk) 16:07, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't cropped, this is original size.
As you can see here, the camera is held up in the crowd with parade bus scene, so the tilt is unavoidable. RuinDig (talk) 14:41, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merci beaucoup@SHB2000 Atef Ouni (talk) 09:00, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. It looks like the weird things you sometimes get when you do HDR in Lightroom and the program doesn't really merge the exposures correctly. You get "blobs" with hard contours. If the "blobs" in the photo are the result of an HDR merge, you can't get rid of them by doing a new one. The only way is to use some clone correction tool or doing a manual partial merge/patch from one of the original photos. In any case, I don't think such flaws belong in an FP. Atef Ouni, can you please see what you can do about this. --Cart (talk) 22:28, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The 'Deghost' option may do the trick if the water was moving slowly. Click on 'Show deghost overlay' and check if the 'Low' deghosting amount masks the offending areas. If not, try 'Medium' or 'High'. After the HDR is generated, check if the masked areas look good and don't have excessive noise (a common side-effect of this technique). F. Riedelio, do you want to take over the nomination from Yann? You don't have any current nominations yourself so you can do that and let the nom continue until the end of the voting period if you like. If you say yes, I'll fix the code for the takeover for you. Also, you should not have uploaded the cup with coffee over the original photo, but instead uploaded it as a separate new file especially since the empty cup file has been assessed as a QI. This is a too big change. The empty cup image is valuable for the wiki project too, we need both. The filled in cup should have been offered as an 'Alternative' on this nom, or perhaps as a completely new nom. This needs to be sorted out, I can help you if you like. --Cart (talk) 15:20, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to continue the nomination. After this extensive discussion, I am looking forward to the outcome. Thank you in advance for your support.

  •  Oppose Only 2,797 × 1,865 pixels and the bird in this image is very small. The background is too dominant in my opinion. Useful document, but not all the useful images on Commons should be featured. For a FP of a bird, you need at least to be able to see some fine details of the animals at full resolution, not only the branches where it lives. Sorry -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:59, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your review. In my opinion it can not be expected the same level of detail for a small and shy bird where there is only a few seconds window to take a picture of it without possibility to go closer to it compared to pictures of still objects. Also, we have FP pictures of birds that have the same if not less definition than this one : 1, 2. I actually think this picture has enough level of detail compared to the bird size in real life and to the possibility to get close to it. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 13:57, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • When comparing the size in pixels of the two images you give, the first one is 3 times larger, and the second one 2 times. So both may actually have more definition. Moreover, almost all the birds in the FP galleries are much larger than this one. The possibility to get closer is also very subjective. The more time you spend to capture a specific animal, the more opportunities you get. But this same day you also captured photos of Chimpanzees. Useful photo for Wikipedia, but when zooming in, it's not a FP in my opinion -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:35, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Small passerines like this one are among the most difficult subjects for bird photographers. They're skittish and notoriously hard to photograph. A big thank you to Giles for taking this excellent image and sharing it under a free license! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 05:18, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's a matter of resources. Harrison's lens costs about ten times more than Giles's. I think it's a bit unfair to other bird photographers that such expensive equipment should set the "standard" for FPs. We can only be grateful that people with very high-end cameras and lenses donate some photos to Commons, but I don't think they should set the bar for all the FPs in their special fields. Sometimes FPC can be a tad too elitist. --Cart (talk) 13:48, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • JJ Harrison sets the bar for birds like Kabelleger sets it for trains, or Iifar for focus stacked plants / fruits / insects. Equipment matters but also experience, explored places / subjects, patience, skill, chosen composition, etc. -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:07, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FP rules state that "A bad picture of a very difficult subject is better than a good picture of an ordinary subject. A good picture of a difficult subject is an extraordinary photograph". Some birds are very hard to approach and small birds are especially always moving. I think that this picture is a good picture of a difficult subject as it has enough definition compared to the possibility to go close to the bird. Also, I don't think that JJ Harrison 30'000+ USD main camera gear (EOS R3 + EOS-1D X Mark III + 600 f4 + 400 f2.8) is the bar for small bird FP (difficult subject) when phone camera is the bar for still subject photography (easy subject)... I might have overdone it with saturation. Following your suggestion, here is a new version with less saturation in red channel and tweaked temperature/tint. I don’t want to go any further as it will make it look bleak. I specifically reprocessed this file in newer version of Lightroom to get more true to life appearance. To me it looks golden/orange to match the last moments of the golden hour before sunset. I think it is closer to the original light as the sunset colors can be intense. Also newer versions have more detail and dynamic range. The original is 10+ years old and was batch-processed with older software and original temperature settings that may be wrong. --Argenberg (talk) 22:12, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Info And just to explain this properly: Modern cameras are programmed to average the brightness of the scene to a middle gray, resulting in snow appearing dull and gray rather than bright and white. To correct this, the photographer has to dial in (some cameras have an extra wheel for this) a stop or so of exposure compensation to instruct the camera to increase the exposure, making the snow appear natural. Applying exposure compensation results in a well-exposed image where the snow retains its bright, white appearance without being washed out or appearing gray. •  Comment Thanks to Frank for the thoughtful review. I just opened the image in PS and noticed that the sRGB profile is not assigned. This can make a big difference in how the image looks in different browsers. @Milseburg: If you are going to develop the Raw file again with exposure adjustments, exporting it in the sRGB profile would be a good choice. Just my 2 cents to solve the problem. Best regards :) -- Radomianin (talk) 18:44, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Good catch, Radomianin. I have taken the liberty to embed the sRGB profile with ExifTool. @Milseburg: This is just a little help, especially if you do not want to edit the image anymore; embedding a colour profile with ExifTool is a lossless operation and has no impact on the image data itself, so your image was not changed by this at all. – Aristeas (talk) 14:39, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looking straight up into the magenta Aurora Borealis over Tuntorp, Brastad, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden
  • Auroras are not like most light sources we are used to. They are not constant, like when you photograph sunlight, lamps or the moon. Instead they move constantly and quickly (the link is a good real time video of a lively aurora), kind of like smoke in the wind. They pulsate and throb, one moment you can have a bright formation to your left and 1/4 sec later it can flicker out and a new pulse/ray/squiggle of light appear above or to the right, and this aurora was extremely lively. This random pattern makes it impossible to set the camera perfectly and there will be some posterization if you want to catch the best of these light shows. If you shoot an aurora, you have to take the good with the bad. Also, in this photo, not all variances in luminescence are are due to the aurora. Some of them are small thin clouds. The night started out cloudy, but they began to disappear so I could catch some of the aurora. The small clouds are easier to see in some other photos, like this taken on the same spot, but down towards the horizon. The whole series is in this category. --Cart (talk) 10:56, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not questioning the camera settings, those seem perfectly reasonable. Is posterization also present in the raw file? If so, the issue is indeed due to camera limitations and there is not much that can be done without misrepresenting the aurora. However, in my own pictures I can only recall a couple that showed posterization on the original image. In all other instances posterization was caused by something I did during editing (e.g., clipping channels) or exporting (e.g., choosing the wrong colour space, using too much JPEG compression). --Julesvernex2 (talk) 11:35, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My dear Julesvernex2, your prominent collection of cameras is so way, way, way much better than the two I have, so of course you don't have these problems. My aurora photos are actually among the least processed of all my photos. All edits on aurora photos from such an inferior camera will only make things worse, so I use a very light touch. But the camera is what it is, totally inadequate for professional night photos, but I like to photograph what I see anyway for my own amusement and for use on Wiki articles where the images look good enough at thumb and on the file page. I would never nominate any of my aurora photos here, but I've learned to play along if someone else does. Thank you for reminding me of my humble equipment and confirming that I made the right decision to not nominate my photos here any more, now that technology has moved forward and I haven't been able to follow. --Cart (talk) 12:13, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I offered my own experience as advice, which is a regular (and, in my opinion, useful) occurrence on these pages. I apologise if I have in some way offended you, take care. --Julesvernex2 (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not offended and I always appreciate advice, but there is simply not much I can do about my camera. It's like owning an old Saab and someone with a Ferrari is trying to give you tips on how to drive your old rust heap. ;-) You just feel stupid for parking next to such fab piece of machinery. I know my place, and it's outside this race track now. :-) --Cart (talk) 13:01, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The camera helps, but it doesn't make it all. The greatest pictures were taken with equipment way behind current technology. What's IMO most important is being at the right time at the right place, and having a bit of artistic genius or a human touch. And here you got it all, Cart! Yann (talk) 13:07, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Yann, that philosophy works excellently out IRL, but it does not apply to FPC. Remember that this community has snubbed some of the greatest photos and photographers through pixel-peeping and hard-liner tech talk. --Cart (talk) 13:13, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's one of the great failures of FPC. I guess that a number of Pulitzer prizes or National Geographic pictures may fail here. This doesn't reduce the greatness of the pictures. It only shows the limitations of our community. Yann (talk) 13:59, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cart's EOS 600D from Canon was one of the best in the entry-level class in terms of image quality, similar to my entry-level D3300 from Nikon. But I'm largely happy with it, and it's interesting to see the tried-and-true sensor used unchanged for the 2018 D3500. As Yann mentioned, it's always the photographer behind the camera that counts. The camera is just the tool, whether it's an old Saab or a Ferrari. I would also prefer a higher quality camera, but family commitments and a moderate income make investing in expensive camera systems almost unaffordable. If I may repeat my earlier statement at this point, many of Cart's images would, in my opinion, be worthy of inclusion in the FP Media Archive via the FPC nomination process. Thanks also to Julesvernex2 for the helpful hints and explanations. Just my two cents to this conversation. Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 20:28, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't get me wrong Radomianin, I love my old cameras. They are quite sufficient for my needs, but my needs don't include gathering FPs anymore. I've had my fair share of gold stars, and my little hoard is enough for me. I'm much happier just doing maintenance now and helping newbies here, so they don't stumble on some technicality. --Cart (talk) 05:10, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your appreciated efforts to assist talented newbies. By welcoming them with open arms, we show them the open-mindedness and tolerance propagated by the WMF, so that FPC does not appear to be an elitist club that they will leave in fright. -- Radomianin (talk) 05:54, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Thank you for that compliment. That makes me blush with humble pride. :-) --Cart (talk) 16:32, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is an old template, Template:Wallpaper plus the corresponding categories 1 and 2, that was used in the days of phone modems when it was still not that common for sufficiently large photos to be uploaded on Commons. In those days, people normally didn't have photo editing programs either, so it was a "cool" thing for Commons to be able to provide wallpapers for digital devices. These days it is deemed obsolete (deprecated for 12 years!) since almost any new image uploaded is more than big enough to be used for computers/phones/whatever and people are totally capable of fixing their own wallpapers. ;-) --Cart (talk) 16:53, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Screws city skyline

I withdraw my nomination Undeclared photo manipulation. Yann (talk) 09:38, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

After someone's comment, I added the manipulations made, corrected the problems, and uploaded the new versions, all detailed on the description page. However, I think there is a lack of trust in my nominations why did some people withdraw their vote in favor without checking if what this person said, both the explanations about the modifications and the graphical errors, existed in the photograph?. Therefore, I thank Yann for his nomination and I understand the concern of some people here about me, but I am not well psychologically speaking and I feel it is necessary to withdraw indefinitely from this section because it causes me a lot of stress. --Wilfredor (talk) 11:10, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would have supported if all of the image problems would have been fixed but the reflexion is still wrong and you can see on this image how something closer to a real reflexion would look like, i. e. the reflexion needs to start at the bottom of each screw individually. Also, there are still plenty of artifacts and graphical errors across the image on the new version of the file (these are just examples I have quickly selected but there's probably more). The best would be to start again the edit from the original file because there are many places were dust is not the same above and on the reflexion because it was only removed on one of them. Feel free to fix all of these issues and to renominate the picture once you feel better. Best wishes of recovery 🍀 -- Giles Laurent (talk) 16:20, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Winter sunrise over the Moscow River
The gallery link is ok. There are no 'Natural' FPs from Moscow Oblast yet, so that section doesn't exist yet. In such cases it's a toss-up between omitting the section in the nom, or to add it with a note that this would be the first FP for that section; styles of doing this vary and none particular is preferred. --Cart (talk) 17:05, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First, by all means there is "Central Federal District" section, and second, it's at least controversial whether Places/Natural is here the best choice at all. --A.Savin 00:56, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for clarifying the location, you obviously know more about Russian geography than me or the nominator do. Mount Everest during sunset
Oppose Outstanding scene. But the sharpness doesn't convince me and the elaboration seems too dark to me. IMHO there is also to much empty sky. Overall not perfect enough for a FP. --Milseburg (talk) 16:58, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Milseburg I wouldn't say the scene is too dark. Again, noticable details. However, assuming by the colors on the very top, it is somewhere between nautical and astronomical twilight due to the redness. I've browsed through some categories of mountains during sunset, and the ones that had significant light had a more yellow shade, while this one is more red. The sky could probably be cropped a bit, but the sky is an important feature of this image. WildMouse76 (talk) 22:29, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yeah it is dark my camera isn't good quality too, but what i shoot that good enough for me just experience high altitude landscaping photography during the winter. thanks for nice comments Nir gurung (talk) 14:51, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Frank Schulenburg, technically, it's the same effect that you have at the Horsetail Fall (Yosemite) (nearer where you live). With the sun at the right angle and normal conditions at sunset, the red light will prevail and strike the surfaces that can be reached by the light. The red light is not that uncommon, but it gets so striking when isolated to a few patches by the shadows of surrounding mountains. --Cart (talk) 11:33, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In summary, the red color and sharp edge you're observing on the summit in the photograph likely stem from a combination of geological factors such as mineral composition, weathering patterns, and the play of light. These natural processes contribute to the unique and often striking appearance of mountain landscapes in Nepal and other mountainous regions around the world. a Grasshopper (Sphingonotus rubescens) in Dghoumes national parc. I am nominating it for featured picture due to the details that we can extract from it.

Rufous-throated Partridge
Very true! Unfortunately, this is an old problem on FPC. Too many voters who have never tried photographing under difficult conditions, or have no proper understanding of what can be done technically, will think that all photos should have the same quality as a well-lit, stacked church façade or a studio photo. --Cart (talk) 20:01, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cart's statement comes across as passive-aggressive. If I understand correctly, you are directly placing me in the category of "voters who have never tried photographing under difficult conditions, or have no proper understanding of what can be done technically". That's fine, do you; there's a legitimate reason why I don't post my pictures here, but that doesn't make me any less inadequate. I have no problem with the other responses here, except Cart's. Keep in mind that this is not the first time it has occurred; see here. Wolverine XI 07:29, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There can be no argument on the settings used. But the criticism in the context of FPC is valid. It is difficult to take an FP-standard image in low light. I would be more than happy to support this level of technical quality if the bird was rare. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:42, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose The author can't help it, but I can't get used to the scaffolding in a prominent place.--Milseburg (talk) 13:55, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure it ruins the photo? 15:56, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say ruin. But the scaffolding is too disturbing for an FP. The conditions for an outstanding image of this building were not present at that time. The rising sun is nice to have, but for a FP of this ensemble of buildings, I would forgo it and prefer if important parts of the building are not covered by elements that wouldn't normally belong. BTW, the crop is a bit tight, isn't it? --Milseburg (talk) 16:44, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Just a comment (no critic of your vote!). I completely understand the dislike for the scaffolding. Personally I have learned to resign myself with it especially in photographs of very prominent buildings. I have visited Florence, Siena, and Pisa (to mention just the most famous Cathedral towns of Tuscany) each several times, but AFAICR never seen any of the famous cathedrals without scaffolding – when the restoration work was finished at one part, the next part was scaffolded to carry on with the work. The same applies to all major French cathedrals I know. Therefore I am rather happy with photos like this one because it offers at least an almost clean foreground (almost no cars, people, stands/kiosks – all these nasty things which often ruin photos of such buildings). – Aristeas (talk) 07:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC)  Comment Cologne Cathedral always has scaffolding somewhere. But if a prominent part, like one of the towers, was scaffolded, no FP would be possible at that time. Taking an FP is difficult, it is not possible under every condition. --Milseburg (talk) 16:58, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Young Laarim woman with extensive scarification, Kimotong, South Sudan.NSFWTAG
I checked the case using Google and Wikipedia. The place is some 180 km from Juba, the capital town, it is definitely not a city like London or Tokyo, but it is a town of 490 000+ population, it has airport, banks, schools and university, telecommunication company, TV and shops of electronics, churches of several confessions, etc. There is a school and a clinic in Kimotong. So, I do not think that they are so innocent to not understand the consequences of photography. And I agree that the photo has documentary value and encyclopedic value. LexKurochkin (talk) 07:00, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me, but do you believe to know better than me where I was? it was not in the city of Kimotong, but a remote village in the province. And that's precisely why we went there. It was not a photo tour behind a mall in Juba. There is no shops, no current, no telecom, no transport or something like that in the area. The closest water well could be 1 hour away by foot. Telling this wiöl surely make no difference and people will believe whatever they want, but whatsoever. Poco a poco (talk) 07:24, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not pretend to know the place better than you, as I said clearly, I just used Google and Wkipedia. I tryed to understand. And, actually, you told us your vision of the place only in this particular post. LexKurochkin (talk) 08:54, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think, yes, considering my other comment. Actually, there are not too many places of that grade of innocence nowadays. May be somewhere deep in jungle, but not only 180 km from their capital. LexKurochkin (talk) 07:03, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
180 km without any transport means (or public transport options) and with no asphalt roads (a 4x4 is required) is not what you may think of (definitely not a 1 and a half hours smooth drive). In fact, wit a 4x4 we couldn't drive often faster than 30 km/h Poco a poco (talk) 07:26, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are of course different degrees of innocense, but i seriously doubt that she is aware of how people with a scarification fetish will use this photo. --Cart (talk) 14:03, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To oppose on the grounds that the person depicted is 'innocent' is patronising. Seems a high quality, respectful, documentary image to me. Part of a very valuable and impressive set of images from Poco. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:20, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And Real Madrid fan? you're good ;) At least we have that in common Poco a poco (talk) 03:58, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still new to the game, having only started to support Real Madrid in October or November of 2021. Coming back to what matters, Poco a poco, having lived in Africa for more than 17 years, I am the best person to understand the mindset of black Africans. My biggest problem is that you're photographing a naked black woman, probably the most discriminated group in the world. White people will never understand black people, and that's okay. Looking at this picture makes me feel ashamed to be black. I should just stop talking now. Wolverine XI 11:18, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I believe in the motto of Wikipedia, where every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what Wikipedia is about. I don't understand why an affected party of an issue should be the best person to talk about it. Most people in those remoted villages of South Sudan walked around naked, that's how things are there, and they love scarification too and show it proudly. We were all the time with a lot of local guides who know the area, the people and the customs. --Poco a poco (talk) 15:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
Hi TOUMOU, I see that Rhododendrites has helped you with the categories and fixing the description, thanks for that. Documentation of the photo is just as important for FPC as a good image, so take a look at the changes that have been made on the file page. Good information on the file page will always improve your chances of getting a photo promoted to FP, since info makes it more valuable to the Wiki project. Therefore, would you please add the location to the photo too. If you don't know it, please ask the photographer Skander zarrad. I have fixed the gallery link for you. You need to specify both the right page and the section. When you nominate an image here, you become sort of a "temporary caretaker" of that photo, and it's up to you to make sure everything is fixed and correct. Best, --Cart (talk) 10:57, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This fragment of the decoration of the palace of the Persian king Darius the Great, is an element taken from the frieze of archers found in the Achaemenid palace of Susa. The work of wall art is made up of glazed bricks with reliefs, of which unfortunately the shine of the enamels used has now decomposed under the effect of time and humidity, which explains why it cannot be very specific regarding the standards of the images presented, best regards.--Pierre André (talk) 16:22, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comments about profession depicted
  •  Comment Hi IssamBarhoumi, what a great photo! However, what he is doing is a bit mislabeled. What he is doing is not engraving, but it is very common for people outside the handicraft trade to know the difference. ;-) Engraving is when you cut away material to make patterns (no hammer involved for engraving metals). What he is doing is called chasing, part of the repoussé and chasing techniques used by copper, silver and goldsmiths. Chasing is when you hammer in a pattern into the material, and repoussé is when you hammer out patterns from the backside of the material. I have fixed up the description and the categories for you, but would you mind if the file was renamed too so that is showed the right profession. I'm so happy that we finally have a really good photo for the wiki articles and chasers on Wikidata. Coppersmiths often use many different techniques to make the patterns on their work, and the right terminology for all of them is not easy. Best, --Cart (talk) 15:25, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tanner at work, Medina of Marrakesh
Nice photo! Are you sure he is a tanner or has there been a simple mix-up in the translation? A tanner is someone who process the raw hides into leather, a very hazardous and revolting job. After that the leather goes to a currier who dyes and prepare the leather before it can be made into different things by a leather worker. Traditionally, such craftsmen are called "saddlers" even if they make other things from leather than saddles. Perhaps he performs all three professions and we only see one of them (leather working) here in the photo. Love the cat! :-) --Cart (talk) 17:46, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The word "crop" can also mean "framing" in photography terms. No actual cutting of the image needs to have been made. It simply refers to the way the photographer has selected the scene. Since you are new here (like you wrote on another nom), there might be photo terms that are unfamiliar to you. You find most of them at COM:PT. --Cart (talk) 19:16, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • May I ask what all these one-liners/fortune-cookie-quotes you are delivering are about? They don't seem very relevant as assessments of the photo to me, or am I missing something? --Cart (talk) 17:42, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was just another episode. I don't know what happened, all I remember was that I wasn't feeling well, so I grabbed my phone and typed a lot of nonsense while sitting in the corner. I wasn't drunk, I just zoned out for a little while, and typed my thoughts here. I think I must have been insane or something. Wolverine XI 04:17, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, but if you had an episode while you did all these votes, wouldn't it be better if you went back to the votes and re-examined them all? Perhaps replace the nonsense with more relevant evaluations of the photos. --Cart (talk) 10:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Purple martin in flight
  • Gallery: Commons:Featured_pictures/Animals/Birds/Passeriformes#Family_:_Hirundinidae_(Swallows)
  •  Info Purple martin in flight, slowing down as it approaches its nest. Spent a long time try to get a sharp photo of these very fast birds -- I was happy with this one.
Note: I tried something with the sky that I haven't attempted before, pulling a cloud from another shot taken at the same place at the same time from roughly the same direction. I don't know if that's too much retouching for FPC, but erring on the side of disclosure (it didn't affect the bird itself -- just improved the background a little). all by — Rhododendrites talk23:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment It is mentioned but that doesn't make it acceptable. We can't go around replacing backgrounds. Where would that stop? Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:09, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Why can't we? Restricting FP to the rules of photojournalism and photo contests would leave out a bunch of interesting candidates. Julesvernex2 (talk) 21:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • You have never manipulated a background (or a foreground)? All of the out-of-focus twigs, distracting leaves, bird/bug-specks in the background, etc. that you've photographed -- you've never removed them? Pay no mind to extraordinary feats of AI-enabled sharpening, AI-based denoising, selective tone adjustments, and all other manner of post-processing, but add a cloud (a cloud in the sky at that place and at that time, even) and all of a sudden I've crossed a bright line? I'm not saying it shouldn't matter -- I know it'll go against some people's sensibilities, which is why I highlighted it in the nomination statement, and anyone is free to oppose if they wish -- but this Arbiter of What's Acceptable stuff is too much. — Rhododendrites talk21:51, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Technically, any panorama which includes sky and clouds will have several spots in the sky where parts are from other neighboring photos, so in fact replaced and often tweaked/reshaped by the processing program to look nice. I can guarantee that the sky never looked exactly like in this image, because it is a product of the program that stitched the panorama. We accept that without question because they are declared as panoramas and we know they are "manipulated". As long as the alteration is openly declared in a very clear manner (which has been made here), I see no problem with entering such photos here at FPC. It's just a matter of classification, and in each case votes can decide how much they are willing to tolerate in an FPC. Ideally it would be great if the original was found in the file's upload history so that we can see each step, I think that would help people decide how they are going to vote. In this case, I suspect there is no great difference. --Cart (talk) 22:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • For good measure, I've uploaded the version before the sky adjustment and reverted. Note that the uploaded file is also before another pass at tone adjustments/white balancing so it looks slightly different in other [more mundane] ways. — Rhododendrites talk22:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed a small but surprisingly effective change! A small nitpick: those beautiful steel blue feathers above the eyes got quite a bit duller after the tonal adjustments. Julesvernex2 (talk) 12:18, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- WildMouse76 (talk) 22:33, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I agree with Charles that heavy-handed manipulations (like sky replacements) applied to images which will be used in a context where the audience can expect a realistic depiction of the subject shouldn't be featured here. As image manipulations seem to come up more often these days, there might be a need for a more in-depth discussion about what's ok and what's not. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 04:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • A discussion has been opened on the FPC talk page. --Cart (talk) 12:07, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "heavy-handed manipulation" didn't change the subject at all, so if the point is to ensure a photo of a martin looks like a martin that's irrelevant here. If it's to ensure a martin could be seen in front of a realistic background, the fact that it's the same sky from the same place/time would seem pretty realistic. So what's left is an arbitrary line whereby using AI to manipulate an image's noise/sharpness, stitching images, using content-aware fill, outright removing pieces like disturbing plants and smears, etc. is acceptable and this is not. I would feel less strongly about this if people just said "it offends my photographer's sensibilities in ways that a wide range of other manipulations and 'unrealities' do not" rather than act as though this is unrealistic but the rest of what we see at FPC is completely realistic. — Rhododendrites talk13:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've placed a tentative {{FPD}}, though anyone is free to take this nomination over. --SHB2000 (talk) 07:09, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, you shouldn't create a new nomination until one of your two active is done, not just because someone might find it and add it (like what happened here) but mostly because having a nom waiting in the pipeline will shorten the time for your nom and that is rigging the game if it's done on purpose. The voting time starts when you create a nom, not when you add it to the FPC list, and by creating it in advance you are in effect shaving off time on this voting platform until it closes. --Cart (talk) 08:57, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nomination denied. Thank you for nominating this image. Unfortunately, it does not fall within the Guidelines because only two active nominations per user are allowed.

I withdraw my nomination Even though I didn't put it here, I guess I can withdraw it and restart the nomination. And of course I wasn't rigging the game as Cart implies above. Since the FPC rules state "The voting period is 9 complete days counted from the nomination", I suggest you change this wording. 'Nomination' to me means when I add it to the FPC nomination page, not when I prepare the page. And please place a warning on the FPC nomination page to stop others getting their next FP nomination ready in advance like I did. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:08, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is already a warning on every nomination page, it's that timestamp that is clearly visible right below the heading saying "Voting period ends on 6 Jun 2024 at 20:33:26 (UTC)". That time is set the second you click on 'Publish' on the nomination page, not when you add it to the FPC list. What is so hard about creating a nomination page that you have to do it so long in advance? --Cart (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Acropolis Of Athens at night
  • Charlesjsharp, the moon is one of those things that is very constant at various locations, but with the same camera settings. The size here is ok for 70 mm lens and the moon phase is right, but the exposure time of 10/1 sec will give you a brighter moon. This moon looks like it's been taken with a shorter exposure time, so that's probably a partial HDR. Not a "terrible" photoshopping in my view, but people can be sensitive to such things. Compare with a photo of a full moon with similar settings that I know is just one shot. --Cart (talk) 13:23, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the constructive review, Красный. I agree that without the small plant, it would be a classical composition with conformity. Keeping it as an intrusive object was intentional because it matches the green paint residue from the previous coat as well as the other tiny plants on the left. It is cropped because the wall actually ends at the right edge of the image. Also, because of the plant, the asphalted section fits as a contrast. But you can find an edited version without the plant for comparison under the SwissTransfer link. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 17:55, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
