This category is an redundant duplicate of Category:Microscopes. There is a separate category for images from microscopes, Category:Microscopic images Benchill (talk) 13:06, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think they are redundant. If you look at Category:Microscopes, in addition to the subcategories, there are a lot of images that are not photographies of microscopes (and those which are should be move to Category:Photographs_of_microscopes). Both categories together contain +150 pictures, my feeling is that it makes sense to have subcategories for a better overview, such as Category:Photographs_of_microscopes and also Category:Drawings of microscopes. Either "drawings" and "photographs" are redundant, or none of them is. --Dietzel65 (talk) 14:50, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
comment. This category messes up "by subject" and "by medium" categorization, - the subject had already been discussed. My opinion is that "by subject" and "by medium" category trees are orthogonal and should not be cross-bred into "subject by medium" intersections. Commons users cannot be realistically expected to maintain such intersections at all levels of category trees. There's Category:Photographs of automobiles, but not Category:Photographs of 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK: there's just Category:1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK. And none of two images in this category belong to Category:Photographs of automobiles because users just don't care or don't know about it. Microscopes are a far smaller subject, so a single determined user may maintain "by medium" tree there. Fine, it's their own time, so let it stay, but don't import this scheme to other subjects. NVO (talk) 19:21, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly a bit late, there are 2500 "Photographs of" categories [1]. Arrrgghhhh --Tony Wills (talk) 08:27, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, not as bad as I thought. There are less than 500 "Photographs of xxx" categories that don't have some prefix (like Macro or Black and white etc) [2]
  • Categories "photographs of" are redundant, the default is that a category contains photographs, other types of media are explicitly described. Category "photographs of microscopes" is logically the same as "microscopes". --Tony Wills (talk) 08:12, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It doesn't work to have "photographs of microscopes", you would end up having to spit each subcategory of "microscopes" into "photographs of stereo microscopes", "drawings of stereo microscopes" etc etc. I have merged the categories, and redirected this one. --Tony Wills (talk) 11:16, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The name of this category is POV. It is not up to Wikimedia Commons to take sides in the armed conflict that has divided Kashmir since 1949. Of course the Pakistanis call the part of Kashmir under Indian administration "occupied Kashmir". The Indians do the same with the Pakistani administered part. All places in Kashmir are called occupied by one side, so this makes the cat not only POV, but redundant as well. Regards, Woudloper (talk) 10:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inherently, public transport tickets are copyrighted and therefore cannot meet Commons licensing guidelines. Train2104 (talk) 13:27, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment If that is so, such tickets from before 1923 as well as any printed before 1977 without any copyright notice, would none the less be public domain per U.S. law. However this seems a moot point, as no media currently within the category seem to fall into such case. None the less, images of such historic tickets would not be a copyright problem and IMO would be within project scope. Some more recent tickets which contain only simple text info and/or simple geometric or typeface logo might fall under de-minimus; I think an argument might be made for File:LACMTA Metro Rail one-way ticket.jpg. -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:16, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why "inherently", I beg your pardon? What makes a barcode and a few letters (I haven't been to the U.S. since 1990s, did it change since?) "inherently copyrighted" unlike, say, airport baggage tags or a supermarket price sticker? I knew those Amerikaners would "copyright" Osama's tapes but "copyrighting" tickets is a bit too far. 'Dismiss the case, if necessary - request deletion of files one by one (well, there's only four... - others stashed elsewhere) NVO (talk) 20:30, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The subcategories of this category named "Human penis, erect length 5-6-7-8 inches" has no encyclopedic value. Such categories are outside the project scope. 80.187.107.134 18:07, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hello again same anonymous IP;
1. you are mis-representing the naming scheme; there are several different categories each covering one size range (i.e.: 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, 8-9, etc.); not one category with an overlong name, as your comment suggests.
i am not entirely happy with the present names; the "overlap" @ the whole number values bothers me, but > & < signs do not seem to be allowed, so if anyone has a better idea, for how to differentiate sizing, i'm open to it!
btw; i chose inches over centimetres because a) it seems to be (in english) the more "traditional" measurement, & b) because it allows for a more convenient grouping by size-ranges. more of the files with measurement data also seem to be in inches.
i'm very much open to discussion on the question of cm vs "
2.wikimedia commons is not an encyclopedia; it is a media repository. our purpose here is not identical to wikipedia
3.it is not terribly hard to understand how anatomy files with a size reference are useful; & for male humans, erect penis length appears to be the "most relevant" stat. erect grith probably comes in second.
also, note: i chose the phrasing carefully;
the categories are meant to include all relevant files abt penises known to be of length 'x'
not only "images of erect penises of length 'x'"
it's relevant & useful to have the images grouped (to compare flaccid vs erect, etc.). especially if the files depict the same individual. if someone wants to develop a sub-cat schema to differentiate size/state they are welcome to do so; but at this point, there doesn't seem to be enough material with size info to justify the effort.
i leave the accuracy of measurement (& standardization of measuring procedure) as separate questions... :P

This is a subcategory of Category:Churches in Copenhagen. Delete and move content into parent. Now if you look at the history of the category, it appears that the creator's intention was to separate buildings from their interiors. It seems that no one else supports this approach; if necessary, interior shots can be also categorized under interior-related categories, but they still belong to "XYZ Church" which belongs to "Churches in...". NVO (talk) 19:41, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The original intention was exactly that. The "problem" was that Category:Churches in Copenhagen as a subcategory to Category:Buildings in Copenhagen resulted in a variety of non-building photos - including chairs, lampposts and such. By creating Category:Church buildings in Copenhagen and removing Churches in Copenhagen from Buildings in Copenhagen this was avoided. This scheme was however partially corrupted by User:Ramblersen who removed Church buildings in Copenhagen from Buildings in Copenhagen (diff) and later when 91.100.52.79 re-added Churches in Copenhagen to Buildings in Copenhagen. Before completely dismissing Church buildings in Copenhagen, I think we should ask for input from User:Ramblersen, as to why he/she removed the category from Buildings in Copenhagen, as I still think the original intent is valid. --Henrik (heb: Talk · Contributions · E-mail) 09:09, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's a fine concept, it just doesn't work because it's counterintuitive. If Churches in X exist, files of buildings will end up there and not in Church buildings in X. Simpler names always prevail.
Take a look for example, at much-discussed Category:Libraries. It has subcategories for interiors and exteriors. Category:Library interiors is working. Category:Exteriors of library buildings is stillborn (14 images in three months). NVO (talk) 10:58, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Better try to make parallel cat-trees Category:Churches and Category:Buildings, the latter with a note: for churches, see Category:Churches. --Havang(nl) (talk) 11:29, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Churches, in a global scheme, is already subcategory of Buildings: Buildings -> Buildings by function -> Religious buildings -> Religious buildings by religion -> Category:Christian buildings -> Churches. The same long walk (sometimes missing one link or two) is replicated for countries and cities (Normally. I haven't checked them all, so perhaps Copenhagen is not exceptional in this aspect). NVO (talk) 14:50, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Naturally, each category of some kind of buildings and all categories of separate buildings should contain also closeup images of parts and equipment of such buildings. It's nothing which should be avoided. If needed, some categories like "General views of churches" can be created (see General views of Casa Milà or General views of watercraft), but I feel no need for such categories.
Independently on the current category content, I would understand the term "Church buildings" as more wide term, involving not only churches as liturgical buildings but also other buildings owned by the church(es) as the organization(s). Rectories, chapels, monasteries, bishopries, charity buildings, church schools, youth centres, hospitals, retirement homes etc. owned or operated by the church. --ŠJů (talk) 23:52, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In my town, there was a time when individual parishes were significant land developers and owned many apartment blocks. These buildings are still named after the parish that owned them, i.e. the Trinity Church Building stands a few block away from the church building itself. Sometimes a wealthy parish or a monastery would invest in properties in a different city - strictly business. Owned, yes, operated, yes, but I think these should be left out of "church buildings" in any sense. NVO (talk) 19:00, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think, such buildings are church buildings but not religious buildings. What I wanted to say is that the term "church buildings" is unclear, confusing and ambiguous. --ŠJů (talk) 20:08, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The original issue was wither Churches should be in buildings or not, because a lot of the photos in the Churches in Copenhagen category, was of non-churchy stuff (chairs, fountains, lamps, pictures etc.). This "stuff" (for a lack of better terms in my vocabulary) might be relevant to the institution of the church but not for the building as such. As User:NVO points out the problem about separating is that it might be counterintuitive - simply because people see both the building and the institution in the word church, which I guess is fair enough. For now I think that the best solution is to put some sort of notice in Buildings in Copenhagen (in fact I have noticed that the same problem also applies to museums and train stations and possibly also others) so:
Delete and move content into parent. --Henrik (heb: Talk · Contributions · E-mail) 06:37, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete and merge with parent, per NVO. Images categorized as "church" commonly are understood as church buildings, not any image related to a church as institution (i.e. owned by a church, administered by a church, person associated with a church, etc). --ELEKHHT 13:15, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Propose moving to Category:Bridges in the San Francisco Bay Area and adding the three other bridges. p.s. I suspect the confusion stems from raw categorizing of geograph.org.uk files, cf this diff. NVO (talk) 01:56, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest that NVO's suggestions has a lot of merit - "gasometer" is not used anymore in speech, and the style of such containers has also strongly changed, so a historic subcat would make sense. Ingolfson (talk) 10:12, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This looks good, since they are distinctive enough and have their own Wikipedia article. Ghouston (talk) 02:43, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All those geograph.org.uk files can be moved to Category:Gasometers in the United Kingdom. Ghouston (talk) 02:46, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Closing since there were no objections to making it a subcategory. ghouston (talk) 07:28, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

College athletic programs

edit

Proposal to move categories from the format "(Official university name) athletics" to "(Short name) (nickname)". This matches general usage (which should aid in categorizing future images), as well as the English, French, and Spanish Wikipedias. --Spyder_Monkey (talk) 05:51, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My main concern is that some of the items in these categories don't really make sense if moved to the proposed new names. For example, Category:Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena would be moved to Category:RIT Tigers -- but while some Tigers certainly make use of the arena, the arena seems to fit better in a category that refers specifically to athletics. It's a minor semantic issue, I suppose, but it just seems a little awkward. Powers (talk) 18:04, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Support: I think the move would be a good idea because of the wider usage of, say, "Michigan Wolverines" than "University of Michigan athletics" and it will save time and effort with users who work with HotCat. Case in point: if I have, for example, a Michigan softball photograph and am searching "Michigan Wolverines softball" in HotCat, it is a lot easier to backspace to "Michigan Wolverines" than reenter "University of Michigan athletics" when I discover that a separate softball category does not exist. I realize it may be a minor thing, but it could make things a little simpler for a lot of people. TFCforever (talk) 18:50, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I don't really understand what you mean. In your example, the only time one would refer to "RIT Tigers" is in reference to the athletic teams. While not everyone may be familiar with the nicknames, the same confusion could come from Category:Dallas Cowboys or Category:River Plate. That said, the arena category would be better off in a Category:RIT Tigers ice hockey subcategory. --Spyder_Monkey (talk) 04:36, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand this objection either. What is the problem with categorizing the ice arena this way? cmadler (talk) 14:09, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose; seems like there is more to a college athletic program then what is represented by their name, so I think using the name might narrow the scope. I recommend using the name as a redirect. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 11:58, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you clarify what you mean? I don't see how "Clemson Tigers" conveys anything less than "Clemson University athletics". As an example, the website for Clemson's athletics is ClemsonTigers.cstv.com --Spyder_Monkey (talk) 03:40, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose; if you're not American you would be hard to know what is the category with only the name. This makes it difficult to categorize when uploading a file. Metrónomo (talk) 17:53, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose; I can't see that consideration has been given to categorization of historical images. Wouldn't applying the current name of these programs would be unnecessarily anachronistic in many cases? TheGrappler (talk) 22:13, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good point. Consider, for example, Category:Miami University athletics; would it make any sense to include Miami Redskins-related images in a category titled Category:Miami RedHawks? Powers (talk) 21:16, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Support per TCFforever; also the change will match the naming convention at the English Wikipedia. cmadler (talk) 19:37, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: In addition to the anachronistic results mentioned above, there's also an issue where some schools use different nicknames for their male and female athletic teams. Powers (talk) 21:18, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The solution used in English Wikipedia articles is to make a distinct nickname redirect to the more-widespread or gender-neutral nickname. For example, "Tennessee Lady Volunteers" (as well as variants such as "Lady Vols") redirects to "Tennessee Volunteers". Likewise, "Lady Longhorns" redirects to "Texas Longhorns". Another solution, which appears to be used in English Wikipedia categories, is to give both names, so we find "Category:Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols". Offhand, I don't know what other schools still use this formulation; many have in the past, but it is becoming increasingly uncommon (e.g., the University of Kentucky dropped use of "Lady Kats" for the women's basketball team in 1995). cmadler (talk) 14:09, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Hobart and William Smith Colleges, for instance. At this time, there's no athletics subcat, but if there were, and the above proposal were accepted, would we name it Category:Hobart and William Smith Statesmen and Herons? Category:Hobart Statesmen and William Smith Herons? Powers (talk) 17:54, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. Leave as is...this will amount to unnecessary confusion to non-U.S. users, and it feels like this will create more problems than it solves. And, to be fair, this solves absolutely nothing...it is purely aesthetic. Huntster (t @ c) 20:31, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think non-U.S. users would be confused by this any more than they would by the use of "athletics" to refer to sports in general, and the de facto professional nature of big time college sports. Actually, I'm not sure what the confusion would be about. These categories aren't about sports on various U.S. college campuses. They're about officially sanctioned representatives of universities that are set up as sports organizations and operate on budgets that are separate from the schools. The [University name] [nickname] construct would be a more accurate indication of exactly what these categories are about. That, and maintaining consistency with the English Wikipedia and Wikipedia naming conventions in general. No one talks about playing basketball against the Georgia Institute of Technology Athletic Department - you say "Georgia Tech Yellowjackets". So yeah,  Support. --Ytoyoda (talk) 06:19, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You might have a point about D-I institutions, but at D-III institutions -- some of which are on the list of proposed moves -- athletics are far from "de facto professional" and don't have entirely separate budgets (no more so than "the math department", that is). Powers (talk) 17:54, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose per FieldMarine. It's not obvious to me that just listing the name of the nickname equals the whole athletic especially in cases where the team has changed name. The w:Marquette Golden Eagles were known as the Marquette Warriors, Blue and Gold, Hilltoppers, and Golden Avalanche in the past 100 years. Royalbroil 11:33, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose far too many items included which do not belong under the team names. Infrogmation (talk) 04:25, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support the general rationalization of university athletic programs proposed above, although perhaps it would have been easier to work on a case-by-case basis rather than trying to change everything at once. In general with US college athletic programs, the single nickname represents all of the athletic programs at a university. Regarding anachronisms, how do we handle other situations where an entity changes name over time while still being recognized as a continuation of the previous entity? Whatever we do there was should follow here. Grondemar (talk) 00:46, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose, I can see these as subcategories. in one case Category:California State University, East Bay athletics has the subcat Category:Pioneer Stadium, which then has the subcat Category:2010 WPS Championship, as the Women's Professional Soccer team FC Gold Pride played there. If other stadia host non school games, then this gets complicated. the stadia are the property of the athletics departments of the schools, and may not be used exclusively by the school teams. To my ear, it just sounds better to use the formal names here. however, not being a sports follower, i will defer to those with more sports editing experience.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:26, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support I generally support this, using the most modern names, and letting the very rare case of completely different men's/women's team names be exceptions. I redirected Category:Georgetown Hoyas over two years ago, because I felt it was silly to do otherwise. Subcategories, for example are at "Category:Georgetown Hoyas football" or "Category:Georgetown Hoyas basketball". In response to User:FieldMarine, a category called "Category:Georgetown University athletics" I would expect to be more narrow, with only images of the athletics department building or maybe of the school's Athletics Director, not be a parent category for all sports teams.-- Patrick, oѺ 19:24, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd actually go in the other direction, with, for example, "University of Michigan athletics" being a parent category to "Michigan Wolverines", but including also images and categories pertaining to administration (as you suggest) and intramural athletics. cmadler (talk) 12:31, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's not a bad option, though I do think it would introduce a level of redundancy in the categories. Would stadiums be a subcategory of "University of Michigan athletics" or "Michigan Wolverines" for example (or coaches, individual sports teams, etc)? I don't think many of these categories actually have images pertaining to the athletics administration, and I'd say the vast majority of media relates to sports teams. I also realize this might be a bigger debate between de jure and de facto. Between whether we view these teams as just a department of the university, or as they often function as, a semi-professional athletics system, one that would justify a category structure different from schools outside the United States.-- Patrick, oѺ 05:18, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose <The current method of "University name athletics" is already uniform and consistent, thus making searching and categorizing easier—while at the same time reducing the potential for errors. <The proposed change is unnecessary. As I read all of the above opinions, I do find some opinions with merit that support the change, but none that override the arguments as presented by Huntster and Metrónomo. Therefore, keep the existing naming paradigm as is. — Senator2029 21:31, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think that keeping something because it is the status quo is a lousy argument, and one I see rejected again and again on Wikipedia. In naming categories for cities or countries, the Commons doesn't reject local names because non-nationals might not recognize them, so why would we do it here? Conformity is overrated, and I'd say this current category naming system is inaccurate for its subject, and that's just the sort of problem that CfD is able to change.-- Patrick, oѺ 23:31, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how it's inaccurate; in fact, the proposed naming system is likely to be more inaccurate in some cases, some of which I brought up above. Powers (talk) 03:02, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is inaccurate because we have official, widely used names for these programs, and we're currently pretending they don't exist. There exists no program actually named "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University athletics." As to the examples, Wikimedia Commons has no issue with teams that changed names in any other league, so I'm not sure why you're suggesting that there would be problems here. I see media from the Washington Bullets categorized under the Washington Wizards, or the Kansas City Wizards in Sporting Kansas City. In neither case did we choose to ignore their chosen name and refer to them as "Washington, D.C. NBA team" or "Kansas City professional soccer team".
I also see your example of a school that has two different names for its sports teams, and we can discuss the two schools on this list that have different names based on gender: the Cowboys and Cowgirls from Wyoming and Oklahoma State. Like your Hobart and William Smith example, this too is somewhat hypothetical, since there currently is no media related to either school's women's teams. On EN, OSU uses "Cowboys and Cowgirls" while Wyoming is just "Coyboys", noting their women's name in the prose. Either option however would bring the category name closer to being accurate than they are now.-- Patrick, oѺ 18:57, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Tennessee also uses different nicknames by gender: Volunteers and Lady Volunteers (or Vols and Lady Vols for short). In fact, until three months ago (7/1/2012), Tennessee had two entirely separate athletic departments. en:Tennessee Lady Volunteers redirects to en:Tennessee Volunteers, but en:Tennessee Volunteers women's basketball redirects to en:Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball. cmadler (talk) 13:40, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to be under the impression that college athletic departments are officially incorporated under a particular name, like professional sports teams are. They aren't. By using the descriptive word "athletics" with the name of the university, we are choosing a descriptive term that covers all athletics at a particular college, rather than a restrictive nickname that often applies only to varsity teams (vice club teams, which often use different nicknames). Powers (talk) 01:13, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I actually suggested about a week ago that, for example, "Michigan Wolverines" should be used to cover the varsity teams, while "University of Michigan athletics" should be the parent and also include intramural sports (and, I suppose, club teams, though they often are part of a student organizations or student affairs department rather than any athletic department). cmadler (talk) 16:14, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am under the delusion that all the schools listed above have official team names, which are trademarked, rigidly protected, and widely used. Yes, much like professional sports teams. Official club teams never use nicknames different from the school's official team name. If they do, that means they're not affiliated and don't belong in these categories. What we need are categories for official school sports teams, yes both club and varsity. Anything broader than that, say a photo of your college buddies playing pickup, could go in a separate category, such as a student life category, or in the school's parent category.-- Patrick, oѺ 22:46, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just as one example, the Penn State club hockey teams were the Icers; now that they're varsity teams, they're the Nittany Lions. Powers (talk) 18:09, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's a lot of hypotheticals being brought up here, and I think we're loosing sight of how these categories are actually being used, verses what the current names suggest. Take for example Category:Big Ten Conference teams, a parent category for twelve of the subcategories nominated here. I see that there are no actual teams listed in this conference category, only athletics. And what's listed inside those "athletics" categories? Is it track and field, or other general recreation? No, there are subcategories with names like "basketball" and "football," or media from those teams. We could remedy this by renaming all the above categories from "athletics" to "athletics teams", but look at the subcategories and file in Category:Indiana University Bloomington athletics and tell me they don't have an obvious parent category. The levels above and below the categories here illustrate the problem: These are not categories for the athletics department, they are for sports teams. That's how they're currently used, and should continue to be used, and we need to make the naming match that.-- Patrick, oѺ 17:40, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is not hypothetical at all. Would you categorize a photograph of Penn State's club hockey teams under "Penn State Nittany Lions"? Powers (talk) 17:34, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
After you say its not hypothetical, you ask a completely hypothetical question. Like these other examples, we don't actually have media from Penn State's hockey team, neither when it was a club nor now. In getting into this sort of detailed discussion about non-existent media you're trying to prove that the proposed changes affect some very select situations. But I think the discussion has got into club sports or historic names because editors might not understand the idea behind Wikimedia's categories. We don't make ideal categories and then find media to fill them, we must instead group the media that is there into the larger tree structure, and that's what calls for this change. And it is fine to look for exceptions, just so that when the categories are renamed, any exceptions can have their cats adjusted.-- Patrick, oѺ 01:14, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not having an encyclopedic knowledge of every athletic program out there, I'm left trying to use situations with which I'm familiar as examples. I don't know how else to approach this. Is it your contention that every single file currently in these categories will fit just as well into the renamed categories? Powers (talk) 01:43, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, so I've gone through each of the categories listed here, and I realize that there are more now then when this rename was proposed last year, but I've found very few files or subcategories that would need adjustment if we go through with the rename. Category:Miami University Synchronized Skating Team and Category:University of Delaware Synchronized Skating Team I think just need to be renamed to "Miami RedHawks synchronized skating" and "Delaware Blue Hens synchronized skating" respectively. There are two questions I had in Category:University of Wisconsin-Madison athletics, one about File:Baseball on Lake Mendota ice (2247442050).jpg, which just seems to be kids playing, but there are also three images in Category:Muir Knoll Ski Jump that aren't used in any Wiki, and I wasn't sure what they referred to, whether it was a competition or practice or something else unrelated to the sports teams. But that's it. Overall, I see no problems with this rename at the moment, but I would love to have a second set of eyes go through these here. Basically everything is either sports teams, current and former athletes, or sports facilities, which I think work just as well, née better, in a category with the team name.-- Patrick, oѺ 04:00, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You have to keep in mind we're not just creating a category scheme for the present, but for the future as well. Powers (talk) 20:05, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think the title of the category is not at all clear. What is a close up of an insect?

  • simply every good photo? - You have to come very close to an insect to make a good photo!
  • Photos of body parts? They are usually listed in the Anatomy-Categories
  • Microphotos of Insects?

For this reason I simply would delete it. --Kersti (talk) 20:57, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This category is a part of the category tree Category:Close-ups of animals and Category:Close-ups which seems to be established and widely accepted. --ŠJů (talk) 23:15, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If I look at it I think it is a wonderful category for Brick walls and other things, which are not alife. For animals it is not helpful, because everything body part you could categorice there has its owm name within morpholoy and anatomy of animals, which is a better category for the picture. --Kersti (talk) 10:29, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ŠJů: if it's "established and widely accepted", then were are the rules? What makes a photograph "a closeup"? (I'd argue that "close-up" is primarily about angle of view, which should be wide enough to qualify, but then it's an opinion). How close should it be to qualify? it's just too subjective to be practical. NVO (talk) 09:22, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a rule-of-thumb, we might start with "so close you can discern single hairs/feather rays/...". We might limit it to non-wholebody content, but I believe this would leave out a whole bunch of good and true close-up photos.
The category tree is nice so far. I wouldn't touch it. It more likely needs a fat "POPULATE" sign, all of it. There should literally be dozens if not 100s images in these categories, from what I have seen (the "birds" part is not even remotely full, and that's saying something... if the bird part sucks on Commons, it's usually not a good sign ;-) ). Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 23:53, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Idea: is it possible perhaps to have them put some categories on the start page, which casual users are asked to populate? It would be ideal for this, we'd simply get an average interpretation of "close-up" and then we'll see where it makes sense to draw the line.
The only thing we would have to do in such a case is sort the spiders out of the insects ;-) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 00:00, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing: we should start to build an "Insects" tree down from Category:Microscopic images relating to animals. Ultimately as subtree of "Close-ups" (which it certainly is), but it's a different class of imagery altogether wouldn't you say? (There is a lot of content in and around Category:Scanning_electron_microscopic_images). Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 00:07, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Change name of subcategory to Royal Monograms of the United Kingdom Glasshouse 13:49, 7 May 2011 (UTC) Though not critical, I think it would be a good idea to modify the subcategory "Royal Cyphers and Monograms of the United Kingdom" to just "Royal Monograms of the United Kingdom" to conform it to the other 19 subcategories in Category:Royal Cyphers and Monograms.--Glasshouse 13:57, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Can this change be put through?--Glasshouse (talk) 19:05, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - categories should be named accurately - given that "a 'monogram' is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol" and "a series of uncombined initials is properly referred to as a 'cypher' and is not a monogram" (see en:Monogram), and given that both forms are used by royal personages (some use cyphers, others monograms), it would seem more accurate to rename all categories with the form 'Royal Cyphers and Monograms of X' unless the contents are exclusively one form or the other in which case the appropriate description could be used ('Royal Cyphers of X' or 'Royal Monograms of X'). In the case of the United Kingdom, both forms are used and so the category title is accurate (even if some of the file names are not) and should not be changed. Delete this category or change it to standard category for metacategories related to Belgium. It is a redundant duplicate of "Belgium" category and isn't corresponding to similary named "Categories of (country)" categories which are intended for country meta categories. ŠJů (talk) 11:28, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Remove it. First remove it from the topic category tree again: "Categories of Belgium" is not a topic, a collection of random categories based on the coincidence that they have the letters 'b e l g i u m' in their names is not educational. Second, categorizing categories this way does not make sense in general. The only acceptable way to build a collection of Categories for maintenance purpose is a list on a project page - but keep those stuff out of the category tree and stop making the work with categories unnecessary complicated. --Martin H. (talk) 12:04, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose. The work with categories is not unnecessary complicated if we have few flat lists or some Category of categories. 90,99 % of all categories are organized by tree. This other categories are only for maintenance. Who works to order categories, or try to bring consistency in categories, know that these categories are very important and useful. Who doesn't work on categories, and propose only an ideological pattern, will never understand this. --DenghiùComm (talk) 13:06, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Who works to order categories, or try to bring consistency in categories, should understand that the category Category:Categories of Belgium should have analogical purpose and content as Category:Categories of Italy or Category:Categories of Spain. Some of those categories are categories for country meta categories, some of those categories are "flat lists" of all country categories. I think, the second conception (used in case of Belgium) is redundant to the Category:Belgium. Unorganized mix as the current content of Category:Categories of Italy is not very useful and has hardly some advantages compared with the organized category tree. For the first conception (used in case of Italy and France), some better name should be invented. --ŠJů (talk) 23:35, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What is this supposed to mean? If someone is not famous, he/she has nothing to do here anyway. FA2010 (talk) 10:04, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd dispute your main point right here, as Commons does NOT have a "notability" criteria like Wikipedia - only a "useability" criteria for the file. I can upload thousands of photos of anonymous street sweepers, secretaries or early 20th century farmers, not one of which is famous, and they are still fully reasonable to be on Commons.
A more correct question would be, is WHAT makes a person "famous enough" to be included here. And indeed, that's badly defined. I would suggest we might draw upon Wikipedia's notability criteria in this regard (not in whether or not a person's media file is allowed on Commons, but whether or not it is appropriate to be categorised here). I.e. any person or category of a person in here would need to show notability by already having a Wikipedia article specifically about him or her. That would ensure that Commons does not have to re-invent the wheel all over for every person again. As part of that, we could rename the category to "Notable people". Ingolfson (talk) 12:10, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Delete :What's notable or famous in the Welsh area might be completely different from what's notable in the Basque country or in Tibet. The fact that they are somewhere are on Commons makes them notable. I don't think that we need additional subjective filtering. I guess that there are more than one million people that have somewere a wikipedia article about them (600000 en:living). --Foroa (talk) 13:24, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Delete While I agree with Ingolfson's analysis and his identification of the need to have some sort of inclusion criteria, the more fundamental question in my mind is why do we need this category? It doesn't accomplish much of anything, and it potentially could contain hundreds of thousansds ++ of images and subcategories. Inevitably, we'll end up with an unnecessary parallel category structure, as this category will undoubtedly over time be subcategorized by location, occupation, etc. Do we really need to have Category:Actors from Sweden and Category:Famous actors from Sweden? And continuing on from Foroa's point, there will be fights over whether someone is "famous" (whatever that means) or not (even on en-wp, the existence of an article isn't itself determinative of notability). How do we even apply notability criteria to something like Category:Famous couples? (Personally, I think Jack and Olivia are famous, but I have no doubt the rest of you are thinking "who?"). There are a few subcats that arguably have some value (Category:Houses of famous people and Category:Birthplaces of famous people), and could be kept if we agree on some criteria for inclusion, but this category should be deleted and the earth salted so that it never haunts us again. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 14:15, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, I wouldn't have put it quite so strongly, but Skeezix1000s comments about a parallel category structure indeed are a worry. I'd be cautiously supportive of a deletion of the category, if nobody can come up with an easily defendable criteria for notability / famousity (nice word!). And admittedly, I have no easy answer... I did remove all image files from this category, along with the ones on Category:Celebrities which has the same problem. --Foroa (talk) 06:45, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see that there is a problem in the use of the word "Modern" in art: Modern = Contemporary (that is wrong!). In history (and so in the history of art) we use "ancient" for the time until the end of the Roman Empire (A.D. 476). "Medieval" from A.D. 476 until the discovering of America (A.D. 1492). "Modern" from 1492 to 1815 (Congress of Wien). "Contemporary" from 1815 until today. Now I see that in our categories there is a big confusion of this two period. "Modern art" is Renaissance, Baroque, Manierism, Rococo, etc. not Expressionist, Surrealism, Dada, Art Deco, Rationalism, etc. Of course the same problem is in his subcategories Category:Modern sculptures, Category:Modern sculptors, Category:Modern artists, and Category:Modern art museums. What will be the solution? --DenghiùComm (talk) 21:25, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Your proposed timeline is not universally accepted and is, in fact highly counterintuitive: people who lived 200 years ago are not our "contemporaries" by any standard). Beethoven, Darwin, Heine - "contemporary"? no way. Not even "modern" (although firmly in historical en:modernity). English wikipedia defines en:Modern art as "extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s". There's no bright line between "modern art" and "contemporary art". The dividing line between modern art (in this sense) and contemporary art is subject to interpretation and dispute, so splitting "contemporary" out of "modern" is not a practical issue, either. • Oppose (strongly) renaming this and other categories using the dating system 'DenghiùComm' listed under Category talk:Modern art. The wikipedia articles (english text) on modern and on contemporary: art (painting, sculpture, dance, decorative arts, theatre, etc.), architecture, and museums (fine arts, crafts, design, etc.) use a different chronology system. In Europe and the Americas the term 'modern' as a creative fine arts movement is generally used for works produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s. There is no definitive start for 'contemporary' as a movement, however museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II.
During the 1492 to 1815 period in the Americas, that DenghiùComm specifies as modern, the arts and architecture were either in the indigenous peoples' traditional forms or the introduced colonial Spanish-Portuguese baroque variations - neither usually associated with the label modern. DenghiùComm, please consider perusing the articles: en:Modern art, en:Contemporary art; and en:Modern architecture as introductions for a history of art-design dating system that seems more predominant than the valid one you learned. Thank you —Look2See1 (talk) 05:18, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose What you are saying does not reflect the common English language usage of the term "modern art". I haven't seen yet any museum exhibiting 16th century art as modern, or 19th century art as contemporary. What you are referring to is a broad categorization in history not history of art. --ELEKHHT 07:10, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

  • "Modern" and "Contemporary" are conventional names, not conceptual names. For convention we call Modern time the period after the Middle Age, which begins in the year 1492 and finish in the year 1815. If we consider these conceptual names, so we will be obliged every 100 year to put the "oldest" century in an other period: in the year 2060, will be the year 1860 modern?
  • If the Middle Age finish in A.D. 1492, and Modern times begins in 1860, how do you call the time from 1492 until 1860? I hope not Middle Age...!
  • I understand that America has not a millenary history like Europe. So I think that it is not useful that we apply the american concept of "modern" if 90% of the western art is in (or from) the millenary Europe.
  • Don't confuse "Modern art" with art movements like "Modernism".

--DenghiùComm (talk) 09:16, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This has nothing to do with America. Please read my previous explanation more carefully. Also check out w:en:History of art#Western Europe. The period between what historians call the end of Middle Ages and what art historians call modern art is covered by the Renaissance, followed by the Baroque and Rococo, etc. Don't confuse "Modern times" with "Modern art". --ELEKHHT 21:42, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Very clear consensus against deleting or renaming this. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:30, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The name is not clear what this category means (found in no dictionary). The intention seems similarly to Category:Images of low quality and Category:Images in lossless format with lossy compression artifacts --Perhelion (talk) 03:44, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've done this edit to. -- Perhelion (talk) 03:52, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did create the category because there where so many images in it; I did not filled it up myself. I guess that pixlr is some sort of jargon for pixelation errors (contraction) due to compression/decompression of low quality images. It seems indeed related to Category:Images in lossless format with lossy compression artifacts, but limited to icons and other small windows related objects. Nowadays, Pixlr is a public domain photo editor. No clear idea what the right name should be. --Foroa (talk) 06:17, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see "pixilated" would also apply? Now I actually see the «Category:Images in lossless format with lossy compression artifacts» is not applicable and different (because these are in lossy format). So I would suggest to rename this Category to «pixelation errors» as a subcategory of Category:Images with inappropriate JPEG compression (partially accurate Category:Images which should be in PNG format)!? -- Perhelion (talk) 15:17, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

pixlr seems the name of an online graphic editor software. The images presents in the category seem to be screenshots. See [[3]] for more information. I don't know what to applies for its screenshot. The website seems to say 'free to use' as gratis, so maybe it should be deleted... Esby (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing wrong with the category, although the file quality is problematically bad. That being said, all of the images are in use on is.wikibooks, so I won't pursue the matter any further. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:28, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
