Julia Watson
Academic and author, Watson is the Principal and Founder of Julia Watson Studio, an experiential, landscape, and urban design studio, and a Director and Co-Founder of 'A Future Studio', a collective of conscious designers with an ethos towards global ecological change. She teaches Urban Design studios at Harvard and Columbia University. After graduating from Harvard with the highest award for her work on conservation and spiritual landscapes, she has been published in Nakhara Journal, Water Urbanisms East, World Heritage Sites and Living Culture of Indonesia, and co-authored the Spiritual Guide to Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage with Dr. J. Stephen Lansing. Julia approaches design as a Rewilding, with a portfolio of public projects including the Cultural Landscapes of Bali UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Reef Resilience Initiative with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. In the design of private estates, Julia has worked with the German-American art collector Artur Walther of The Walther Collection, Marc Glimcher and Fairfax Dawn of PACE Galleries and Marfa Ballroom, and the African-American artist Rashid Johnson. She’s a REALITY Fellow, a Pop!tech Social Innovation Fellow and Guest Speaker, a Robert S. Brown Fellow, a Charles Eliot Fellow, an Olmsted Fellow, a recipient of a Christensen Fund Conservation of Cultural and Biological Diversity Grant, and was chosen by WIRED Magazine and Oakleys as a Disruptive By Design Ambassador. Julia is now a judge for the New York State Council of the Arts, Architecture + Design grant, which she previously won for her forthcoming book ‘Lo-TEK; Design by Radical Indigenism.’
