At the refuge yesterday I was taking pics of a sparrow sitting on top of some blackberry bushes. I don't know why, but I glanced down and was surprised to see this Weasel looking back at me. S/he stayed put for a fairly long time, so I was able to take lots of pics....I just wish s/he had been in a more photogenic location....but that's not always how it goes. The European Mink (Mustela lutreola) is now restricted to small patches in northern Spain and western France, Romania, the Ukraine and Russia. It is legally protected throughout its range, but it was heavily overexploited in the first half of the 20th century for the fur trade. Furthermore, habitat loss, hybridization with and local replacement by the introduced American Mink have contributed in the decline of the European Mink. It is listed as Critically Endangered.
