This field study investigates the morphological indices (condition index, hepatosomatic index) an... more This field study investigates the morphological indices (condition index, hepatosomatic index) and biochemical (catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), metallothionein (MT), lipid peroxidation) parameters in liver, gills and kidney of common sole (Solea solea) originating from different sites of the Tunisian coast area impacted by different anthropogenic activities. Differences among sites and tissues for AChE, GST, CAT, MT and TBARS were found and possibly related to known sources of domestic and industrial discharges in the studied sites. Liver, gills and kidney CAT, liver and kidney MT and brain AChE were key biomarkers to discriminate fish of different sites. So, we suggest using these biomarkers in future biomonitoring.

Various factors influencing reproduction in dairy Holstein cows were routinely evaluated and gene... more Various factors influencing reproduction in dairy Holstein cows were routinely evaluated and genetic parameters were estimated for four traits to assess fertility of artificially inseminated cows: Calving to first service interval (CFSI), calving interval (CI), calving to conception interval (CCI) and number of services per conception (NSC). Data used in this investigation consisted of records of insemination and calving events on Tunisian Holstein cows. The data included records from 1994 to 2003 in 150 herds. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of non-genetic factors on reproductive traits and estimate their heritabilities. The factors examined were: month and year of calving, herd, parity, and year-month of calving. The effect of month and year of calving (or insemination), herd, parity and year-month of calving were included in the model and were significant (P < 0.01) except for the number of lactations that does not have an effect on the NSC. A decreasing efficiency in cow fertility was observed over the last years, with a longer day for first service interval. Heritability for fertility traits was low ranging from 0.027 for NSC to 0.067 for CI. The results suggested that more attention should be paid to herds with too low fertility traits and that monitoring and intervention schemes should be tested in research approaches.

Genetic diversity among two breeds (Barbarine and Western thin Tail) of sheep in Tunisia was dete... more Genetic diversity among two breeds (Barbarine and Western thin Tail) of sheep in Tunisia was detected by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The relationship between genetic diversity and larger geographical distance among populations has been attributed to a number of different factors mostly breeding systems. We assessed this relationship among 12 populations belonging to two Tunisian sheep breeds using RAPDs by including eight randomly selected individuals from each population. Eight primers produced 62 clear and reproducible polymorphic bands. In populations, the percentage of polymorphic bands ranged between 32.26 and 51.61%. The range of Nei's gene diversity within-population was wide, varying from 0.1522 to 0.2157. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that the variation between breeds is 29.54%, and that the variation between populations within breeds and within populations are 8.47 and 61.99%, respectively. Actuellement, la fili"re lait en Tunisie rec"le une ambivalence dans la mesure o… l'aval conna †t une croissance sans pr•c•dent tandis que l'amont n'arrive pas ‡ satisfaire toute la demande exprim•e malgr• les efforts fournis par l'Etat. La viande et les produits laitiers ne font pas figure d'exception. Ils sont parmi les denr•es alimentaires les plus demand•es surtout pendant le mois de surconsommation (Ramadan). Cela a d'ailleurs pouss• l'Etat Tunisien ‡ importer des quantit•s importantes pour faire face ‡ la hausse de la demande. Methodology: Solid-state fermentation was conducted in Erlenmeyer flasks and plastic trays using apple pomace (AP) as solid substrate by Aspergillus niger NRRL 567 and A. niger NRRL 2001. Results: Solid-state tray fermentation resulted in cellulase activities (IU g À1 dry weight basis) of 383.7 AE 17.9, 425.3 AE 21.3, 336.1 AE 16.2 and 4868 AE 39.8, respectively for FPase (filter paper cellulase), CMCase (carboxymethyl cellulase), BGL (b-glucosidase) and xylanase using A. niger NRRL 567. Similarly, A. niger NRRL 2001 resulted in enzyme activities (IU g À1 ) of 401 AE 23.8, 544.7 AE 24.5, 285.4 AE 11.7 and 4580.7 AE 34.5, respectively for FPase, CMCase, BGL and xylanase. The enzyme loading of FPase 50 IU g À1 substrate in the hydrolysis of AP resulted in (g kg À1 ): 509.3 AE 22.9 total sugar (48 h), 109.3 AE 5.7 reducing sugar (48 h), 16.1 AE 0.8 glucose (60 h) and 10.4 AE 2.0 xylose, respectively whereas hydrolysis of BSG resulted in (g kg À1 ): 375.7 AE 16.2 total sugars (36 h), 114.6 AE 4.0 reducing sugar (60 h), 18.1 AE 0.9 glucose (60 h) and 19.8 AE 2.0 xylose (48 h), respectively.

RESUMO -Neste estudo, avaliaram-se os efeitos de alguns fatores ambientais sobre a produção, a co... more RESUMO -Neste estudo, avaliaram-se os efeitos de alguns fatores ambientais sobre a produção, a composição química e a contagem de células somáticas do leite em rebanhos vinculados às cooperativas no Rio Grande do Sul. Foram utilizados dados de um programa de controle leiteiro durante cinco anos, totalizando 165.311 observações, para analisar os seguintes efeitos ambientais: ano e mês do controle leiteiro, idade ao parto, tempo em controle leiteiro e estádio da lactação. A produção média de leite foi de 19,36 L/vaca/dia. Foi encontrada maior produção de leite em vacas de 5 a 6 anos de idade ao parto, nos primeiros 60 dias de lactação, nos meses de inverno e em rebanhos com mais tempo em controle leiteiro. Maior número de células somáticas foi relacionado à redução na produção de leite. Houve menor teor de gordura e de proteína no leite nos primeiros 60 dias de lactação e aumento desses componentes com o aumento no número de células somáticas. A concentração de lactose no leite diminuiu significativamente à medida que aumentaram as células somáticas e a idade ao parto. A contagem de células somáticas aumentou com a idade da vaca e à medida que avançou a lactação. Nos meses de inverno, verificaram-se valores mais elevados de proteína, gordura e lactose, possivelmente como conseqüência da alimentação com gramíneas temperadas.

Records of functional longevity (FL), from first calving to last recording (or culling), of 36,88... more Records of functional longevity (FL), from first calving to last recording (or culling), of 36,888 Tunisian Holstein cows in 169 herds were studied using survival analysis. Using a Weibull proportional hazard model, the influences of age at first calving, herd-year-season, lactation number-stage of lactation, milk production within the herd and year, annual change in herd size and random genetic effect of sire on FL were studied. Besides a random time-dependent effect of herd-year-season, the model included fixed effects of parity and stage of lactation, within herd and parity production level (all time-dependent), and age at first calving (time-independent). All factors had a significant effect on FL at a level of P b 0.001. Milk yield was by far the most important factor influencing FL and the hazard increased as the milk production decreased. Within the first three lactations, the relative culling risk increased stepwise with lactation stage. The highest risk of culling was found for cows at the beginning and at the end of the first lactation and at the end of any other lactation. The risk of culling decreased with parity.

Etude de l'incidence des boiteries et de leurs impacts sur la production laitière des vaches ... more Etude de l'incidence des boiteries et de leurs impacts sur la production laitière des vaches laitières dans le subhumide tunisien Abstract -This study focused on the incidence of lameness and its impact on the performance of dairy cows. The study was conducted in the Chergui farm in the region of Mateur. There were 230 Holstein cows with mean age of 4.85 (± 1.73) years. Locomotion was evaluated over all cows every 15 days from february to april using the scoring grid of locomotion that assigns scores ranging from score 1 to score 5. Assessment of the state of cleanliness of the barn was performed by two grids with scores from 0 to 3. Furthermore, for each cow, milk yield was recorded and analyzed. Results showed that the incidence of lameness in the farm is around 38.71%, and the most frequent podal affections are located at the hind legs (57.3%). Diet and condition of the barn are identified as risk factors for podal disorders. Milk production is affected by lameness. Indeed, 9...

This field study investigates the morphological indices (condition index, hepatosomatic index) an... more This field study investigates the morphological indices (condition index, hepatosomatic index) and biochemical (catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), metallothionein (MT), lipid peroxidation) parameters in liver, gills and kidney of common sole (Solea solea) originating from different sites of the Tunisian coast area impacted by different anthropogenic activities. Differences among sites and tissues for AChE, GST, CAT, MT and TBARS were found and possibly related to known sources of domestic and industrial discharges in the studied sites. Liver, gills and kidney CAT, liver and kidney MT and brain AChE were key biomarkers to discriminate fish of different sites. So, we suggest using these biomarkers in future biomonitoring.

Methodology: Solid-state fermentation was conducted in Erlenmeyer flasks and plastic trays using apple pomace (AP) as solid substrate by Aspergillus niger NRRL 567 and A. niger NRRL 2001. Results: Solid-state tray fermentation resulted in cellulase activities (IU g À1 dry weight basis) of 383.7 AE 17.9, 425.3 AE 21.3, 336.1 AE 16.2 and 4868 AE 39.8, respectively for FPase (filter paper cellulase), CMCase (carboxymethyl cellulase), BGL (b-glucosidase) and xylanase using A. niger NRRL 567. Similarly, A. niger NRRL 2001 resulted in enzyme activities (IU g À1 ) of 401 AE 23.8, 544.7 AE 24.5, 285.4 AE 11.7 and 4580.7 AE 34.5, respectively for FPase, CMCase, BGL and xylanase. The enzyme loading of FPase 50 IU g À1 substrate in the hydrolysis of AP resulted in (g kg À1 ): 509.3 AE 22.9 total sugar (48 h), 109.3 AE 5.7 reducing sugar (48 h), 16.1 AE 0.8 glucose (60 h) and 10.4 AE 2.0 xylose, respectively whereas hydrolysis of BSG resulted in (g kg À1 ): 375.7 AE 16.2 total sugars (36 h), 114.6 AE 4.0 reducing sugar (60 h), 18.1 AE 0.9 glucose (60 h) and 19.8 AE 2.0 xylose (48 h), respectively.

The study was conducted in the Chergui farm in the region of Mateur. There were 230 Holstein cows with mean age of 4.85 (± 1.73) years. Locomotion was evaluated over all cows every 15 days from february to april using the scoring grid of locomotion that assigns scores ranging from score 1 to score 5. Assessment of the state of cleanliness of the barn was performed by two grids with scores from 0 to 3. Furthermore, for each cow, milk yield was recorded and analyzed. Results showed that the incidence of lameness in the farm is around 38.71%, and the most frequent podal affections are located at the hind legs (57.3%).
