RARE NIʻIHAU SHELL LEI COLLECTION @ BISHOP MUSEUM – Lei made from tiny, colorful shells carried by surf onto the beaches of the island of Niʻihau are among the most prized in the world. A master artisan may take years to craft a multi-strand Niʻihau shell lei, much of that time spent combing beaches for the desired colors & sizes. Shells wash up on shore infrequently & access to the privately owned island is extremely limited, so authentic Niʻihau shell lei often sell for thousands of dollars.
