This article is a response to the question raised by Richard Lazarus, who is the famous proponent... more This article is a response to the question raised by Richard Lazarus, who is the famous proponent of 'cognitive appraisal' in theory of human emotions, in his article "Does positive psychology movement have legs? in 2003. To quote, Lazarus made a critical remark on pp, saying, "American psychology seems suddenly to be enmeshed with a new ideological movement that is being referred as positive psychology. Its premise is that if individuals engage in positive thinking and feeling, they will find a magic elixir of health and wellbeing". In response to the question of Lazarus, whether positive psychology has its legs, the positive psychologists have come out with the latest book, the 3 rd Edition of Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology (2021). The book includes 68 chapters written by 153 authors. The 153 authors try to prove the authenticity and the validity of positive psychology. The author starts with envisioning the future of positive psychology (PP) requires looking at its past. The author claims that she has studied psychological well-being for over 30 years (Ryff, 1989, 2014, 2018), seeking to define its essential features as well as learn about factors that promote or undermine well-being and probe how it matters for health. 2. Three Problems with Positive Psychology in the Past: The author accepts that there are three major problems with positive psychology in the past. The first problem is the poorly constructed measures of well-being and problematic findings, which contradict the claim that PP rests on solid science. She is worried about the necessity of any scientific discipline to be strongly rooted in solid science. The second problem she enumerates that the widespread use of homogeneous research samples (white, well-educated, western) in PP, thereby ignoring how race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and culture matter for positive human functioning.
