Friday Favorite: McLaughlin Garden

June 21st, 2019

Last Sunday, my friend Joan and I went over to the McLaughlin Gardens to see the last of the lilacs. This garden boasts New England’s largest collection of lilacs. Most of them were past prime, but we still got to enjoy a few, here are the ones we were able to see.

I like lilacs as shrubs and the flowers are pretty, the smell however is much too much for me. Any flower with strong fragrance kicks my oversensitive nose into overdrive. Luckily, they look lovely on the plant and I don’t have to cut them to bring them indoors. Here at Chiot’s Run we have a few old fashioned lilacs that are planted around the old stone foundation of the original homestead. There is another dark purple variety planted near the old outhouse. We have purchased a ‘Miss Kim’ as well. This summer, our plan is to plant a lilac hedge around the back of the garage, it should be perfect to help with wind and erosion.

Do you have any lilacs in your garden?

That Fleeting Moment

December 6th, 2018

Yesterday evening, I ran out to look for something I thought I left in the sauna. Right as I rounded the corner of the house I stopped dead in my tracks because of this:

Naturally, I ran inside and grabbed my camera, which didn’t have quite the right lens, but I knew I didn’t have time to change it. It had been foggy all day, not just a bit of fog, thick, pea-soup style fog. Right as the sun was setting, the fog started to blow away and the sun was able to peek through in all its golden glory.

This moment lasted for just that, a moment, it was gone just as quickly as it came as the sun lowered beyond the horizon. This year I’ve really been trying to notice and soak in these moments like this, especially the fleeting ones.

Do you notice the sunsets more this time of year when the sun is setting earlier?

Friday Favorite: That View

November 30th, 2018

In the winter, when the leaves are off the trees, we have a beautiful view of the Coastal Mountains. In the summer we can only see a small glimpse of it, but as the trees start to shed their leaves, the view gets bigger and bigger.

As the days get shorter, the sun also rises over the mountains and makes the view even better. It’s not a bad thing to look at while having coffee.

Friday Favorite: Fun with Family

October 26th, 2018

In case you’ve noticed, I haven’t been posting this week. That’s because my sister made the trip up to Maine with the nieces & nephew. We’ve been visiting lighthouses, seeing the sights, and eating all the good things Maine has to offer.

What fun things have you been doing this fall?

Friday Favorite: The Old Sugar Maple

October 19th, 2018

We have an old sugar maple across the driveway, no doubt it was tapped for syrup by the original homesteaders back in the late 1890’s. It’s huge, it provides us with lots of maple syrup, and it’s a stunner in the fall. The other day, we had a storm roll through right at sunset. As it moved through and the skies cleared, the golden sun was highlighting the tree.

It was a fleeting moment, it was only highlighted for a few moments before it was gone. I’m glad I got a photo of the wonderful moment.

What are you enjoying this season?
